Judging from how it's set out on the page, I'd say it's so that it can be in paragraph form and still show that it's Chris talking.
and I think it was an interview with a whole band...just someone forgot to add other names.or Chris is slowly becoming insane answering instead them all.:)

Yeah it is, and Lowie's singing is really painful.
i heard that, i've got it on mp3
though the best skit was when lowie does that 'imagine' thing. he goes into the TLE mosh pit...gets bashed by all the wussy celebs, he then tried asking chris some questions...chris replies with 'only if you say 'i'm a little bitch who's about to be crushed by 10,000 people'
the way chris says it is friggin awesome

Punk rock Phoenix: the living end's Chris Cheney rises from the ashes.(Interview)
Source: Guitar Player
Publication Date: 03/01/2004
Author: Blackett, Matt
Fate very nearly wrote a premature end to Australia's The Living End. In the summer of 2001, fresh from a successful tour supporting their breakout album, Roll On, guitarist Chris Cheney was involved in a life-threatening auto accident. Suddenly, the time set aside for writing and recording the band's third album was taken up with physical therapy. And then, just when Cheney was ready to enter the studio, the trio's drummer quit.
"There were some very down times," admits Cheney. "But the human spirit is a pretty amazing thing, and we weren't going to let those setbacks be the death of the band."
When Cheney and his mates--double bassist Scott Owen and new drummer Andy Stachan--were finally able to get back to business, they cranked out Modern Artillery [Reprise], a blast of energy and songcraft that showcases Cheney's heroic rifting and head-spinning Brian Setzer meets-AC/DC solos. And while the album also marks the addition of country, classic rock, and western swing influences to the Living End's mix of punk and rockabilly, it's the straight-ahead rave-up, "Rising Up From the Ashes," that declares--in the face of all the hardships--that this band isn't going anywhere.
"Nobody likes being written off," Cheney says.
Did you ever think you'd get this album made?
It was looking pretty shaky for a while. We had planned to take a couple of weeks off, and that ended up being two years.
Did the accident injure your hands?
No, thank God! Bur my femur snapped in half, so I couldn't stand up and play or sit down with a guitar in my lap for a few weeks. That's the longest I'd ever gone without playing. In retrospect, it was probably good to get the guitar out of my hands for a while, even though it drove me mad. I gained a lot of perspective on what we were doing, and I appreciated everything more. All those cliches are true.
How did the time away from the instrument change your approach?
It helped me break out of some ruts. It's always frustrating to not be able to play, but when you pick up the guitar again, you might find your fingers falling into a different shape that sparks ten new ideas. That was definitely the case with me.
How would you characterize the difference between Modern Artillery and your first two albums?
For our second album, Roll On, we wanted to prove there was more to the band than our first hit, "Prisoner of Society" [from 1998's The Living End]. That song is basically three-chord punk--which is great--but I also love Joe Pass, Barney Kessel, and Midnight Oil. So I wanted to show we could be real flashy and have all these time changes and crazy guitar parts. But for Modern Artillery, I wanted to make the songs more direct, with less emphasis on the acrobatics. There's still flashy playing, but even those parts suit the songs better.
Let's talk about some of those parts, is the intro to "Who's Gonna Save Us" played with a pick or fingers?
That's pick and fingers--sort of a Scotty Moore thing. I hold the pick and I pluck with the remaining fingers. I was going for a "Won't Get Fooled Again" feel, and you can't get that kind of electronic-sounding pulse by playing it all with a pick. That was my Gretsch White Falcon--which I played on almost every song--and I doubled the part with either a Gibson SG or a Gretsch Malcolm Young model.
It doesn't sound like Lieu used the Falcon on "Jimmy."
No, that was a '50s Tele. A lot of people have told me that song reminds them of the Police, which is a great compliment because I'm a mad fan. I wanted that chank kind of sound, so it had to be a Tele.
Is that part doubled?
I don't think so--I haven't listened to the bloody album since we mixed it! A lot of times, we'd double a part, live with it for a while, and then decide not use it on the final mix.
How would you decide which doubles survived?
I'm really into tones with clarity--like Malcolm Young's, which is cleaner than you think and has that bite. We spent a lot of time trying to get tones that were high and clangy, but that also had balls. Sometimes doubling would achieve that, and, other times, one guitar sounded more powerful.
The slide part on "So What" is a nice surprise.
I was trying for a George Harrison vibe, and I don't know how many takes I did before I got just the right amount of vibrato. It's not a very spontaneous part! I probably should have raised the action way up to get a really lush-slide sound, but I would just grab the Tele and go for it. My slide playing is something I want to work on because I'm a massive fan of Jimmy Bryant and Speedy West.
The album closes with "The Room," an epic, Townshend-esque roller-coaster ride unlike anything the band has ever recorded.
Yeah, it's not exactly a two-and-a-half-minute pop tune, is it? I spent a lot of time working with a 4-track to get that whole thing together. I had the parts--although some were in different keys and I wanted everything to flow as if I was telling a story. There's the first section with all the orchestration, and then the ska-style verses, and the big rock choruses--as well as all those quirky chords I threw in. I don't even know what they are! They're just supposed to provide suspense and tension.
Was there any opposition to including "The Room" on the album?
The "Powers That Be" thought we might be mucking with our formula too much. But now that it's on there, a lot of people are saying it's their favorite tune on the album. Even a lot of kids love it, which is very gratifying. It's a bit of a cliche for a band to say, "We want to grow and evolve." I'm not saying we've done that, but l think we've definitely demonstrated there's more to the Living End than a double bass and some flashy solos.

New Myspace Bulletin!!
The whispers have been brewing online for months and we can now happily confirm that Fender Guitars are indeed producing a Chris Cheney Signature Series Gretsch® 6126CC Guitar. Chris has been working closely with Fender for months refining the design, most recently visiting the Gretsch factory in Nagoya, Japan where the prototype had been finished just one evening earlier. We’ll report more about this exciting news, including details on where one might find one of these prized guitars in next month’s update.
This very website won the 2006 Hitwise Online Performance Award in the category of Music – Bands & Artists. It was the #1 website in that category among Australian internet users in 2006.
The boys were in the studio recently recording Cold Chisel’s ‘Rising Sun’ for the upcoming tribute album. So happy are all with the result, that a video is in the works to support the release.
Once again nominations were bestowed on The Living End boys from the Jack Awards. This year it’s for Best Guitarist, Best Bassist and Best Drummer.
They head to Toronto, Canada in mid February to play a one-off show with Silverchair, after spending a few promo days in New York in support of State of Emergency. This will be followed up by a couple of festival dates back home including The Great Escape in Sydney, before setting to work on a new album.
Finally, on Australia Day the guys celebrated being the only band in the world to have 10 years of songs voted into the Triple J Hottest 100:
1997 – Prisoner of Society (#15), From Here on In (#49)
1998 – Save the Day (#10), Second Solution (#15), Tainted Love (#17)
1999 – All Torn Down (#41), West End Riot (#48)
2000 – Pictures in the Mirror (#19)
2001 – Roll on (#72)
2002 – One Said to the Other (#52)
2003 – Who’s Gonna Save Us? (#23), Tabloid Magazine (#66)
2004 – I Can’t Give You What I Haven’t Got (#47)
2005 – What’s on Your Radio? (#49)
2006 – Wake Up (#53)
– Thanks to all who have supported them on the J’s over the past decade!

Caught the train to school yesterday and I saw the "City Weekly" on the seat of the train. Picked it up for a casual read and saw just a teeny weeny mention of TLE in regards to Standing On the Outside. Misinterpreted it as negative feedback but then I re-read it. Hope its of any value!

Was on the train again and found an article of Sydney Live with an interview about Rising Sun and touring the states. This came from The Daily Telegraph and is dated for April 5-11. Sorry about the quality cuz the scanner is a bit ancient and the article was spread across two sheets of paper, so a bit of paint-ing (as opposed to photoshopping) was done. Hope you enjoy!

On the way home tonight, I got on the empty train carriage, and picked up a discarded MX. Needless to say I got that page out of atleast 10 other newspapers on that train. Good times.

Ok, so I'm on a huge scanning binge at the moment - Mum has got me scanning stuff left, right and centre for her.
So. I'm going to post a list of the magazines/streetpress that I've got that feature TLE articles in them and if anyone wants them scanned/re-scanned, let me know and I shall do it..will probably start tonight .... maybe.
I'm not entirely sure what has already been scanned, but I do know that Glenn has some..maybe even most of them on 23rdprecinct, but a few are B&W, text only or have dodgy scanning! :p (Sorry to whoever scanned them! :p)
One day soon, I might even scan the smaller, cut out articles that I've got. Once again, Glenn probably had lots of them, but we'll see how it goes :)

---------------------------------------------------
Howdy folks!!
Well It's been a long time............. So I thought I'd put my trusty old right index finger to work and write to you all.
As some of you know, we haven't been playing many shows for a while........... We were all fired up to play The Mania Festival up in QLD until it got canned due to noise issues!
Sorry to anyone who had tickets! I hope you got your money back and bought someone special something special.
There are no shows booked in the near future, BUT we are playing a few shows in the UK in August, which we are VERY excited about.
Between now and then we are taking it pretty easy catching up on things at home and slowly but surely putting some ideas down for the next record.
In some ways this is the most exciting time in the whole process, We kinda know what we want the album to sound like so now it's just a matter of creating it right?........... We are thinking about producers and studios and all that fun stuff, but at the moment.
We're just putting the importance on getting the right bunch of songs together. Hopefully the new album will be a world wide smash with lots of No.1 singles and critical acclaim!!! Well, you've got to aim high don't ya!!
Seriously though, we want the album to have balls and energy. That's the aim, lots of sweat, blood and beers.
Thanks to all that voted for us at The Jack Awards last week! Chris rightly took out Best Guitarist, and our good mates The Red Riders took home Best Newcomer which was nice to see, congrats chaps! Airbourne opened the night and blew people away with pure energy, very Rock'n'Roll indeed.
The rest of the night was spent catching up with friends and drinking............. yep, you guessed it, Jack Daniels.
Well, I'm gonna leave it there. Hope you're all safe and well out there, till next time.
Cheers,
Andy.

THE LIVING END

shout-out to PZO (http://www.popzineonline.com/Sounds/scottowenPZO.au)
http://www.popzineonline.com/IMAGES/TLE.JPG
PZO: Ok, to start off, how would you describe the band's sound?
Scott: Um, I dunno. There's not one simple way to describe it. 'Cause we have a fairly, fairly versatile kind of sound. Cuz we like so many different kinds of, so many different styles of music. So, it's really hard to just explain it in a simple word. I mean, we're, I guess essentially we're just a rock and roll band. Ya know? But we like to try and mix up as many different styles as we can.
PZO: How do you feel your new album "Roll On" varies from your last?
Scott: I think that the biggest difference is we just, I think we've just become a little smarter about the way we arrange our songs, ya know. They're not so pieced just, like kind of pieced together like they are in the first album. I think they are just a little bit arranged a little more wisely and a little more interestingly as well. Without, ya know, sounding like a fusion band or anything. I just think there are a lot more kind of tricky arrangement.
PZO: Do you feel there is any pressure to sell a certain amount of albums?
Scott: Well, no. I mean, we've got a pretty down to earth attitude about, ya know, whether we're to become successful or not. Ya know, we wanna be able to sell enough records to be able to pay our rent. But, ya know, there's no pressure on selling tons of records and becoming a huge, big famous band. We're in this for the long haul 'cause it's a good thing, ya know, so there's really no pressure on us. I'm sure the record company would like us to sell a ton of records, but it's not up to them. Fortunately, it's up to us.
PZO: What's your view on pop music? And do you feel there is any competition between rock and pop music?
Scott: I don't think there's really competition, ya know. I think it's healthy to have all kinds of music out there. There's different strokes for different folks. So it's not really matter of competition. It's just variety. And variety is the spice of life.
PZO: Do you ever get tired of playing your old songs? And if so, what do you do to make them sound fresh?
Scott: The way we've written our songs and the way we've put our songs together there's plenty of room for us to just kind of not have to play it the same all the time, if you know what I mean. Ya know we can always change little bits just individually and sometimes as a band we can kinda take our old songs off on to a bit of a tangent and just kind of jam out a little bit. And that's definitely a way of keeping it interesting. But I don't really get sick of playing the old songs. Sometimes, I guess ya know, sometimes we do. There might be one or two song that you're just like 'We've been playing this song a lot lately. Let's just give it a miss for a little while.' But there's always people that will yell out and request those songs then. And that's when you're like 'If someone wants to hear it... Ya know, I want to play it.'
PZO: Where do you find inspiration for your songs?
Scott: Musically, ya know, I generally find myself being mostly inspired when I just hear something new ya know. And there's something that I like. And when that catches you off guard, ya know, there's a band that you've never heard before, and you get the, first of all, get to hear it. That's generally, musically, what inspires me to just pick up the guitar and just wanna play. But lyrically inspirations come from anywhere. It can come from reading the newspaper or watching the news or something somebody says. Anything. You just gotta keep your eyes open.
PZO: Are there any certain bands that have influenced you? Are there any bands or artists that you look up to?
Scott: Oh yeah, there's tons. I mean, there's too many to mention. I wouldn't even know where to start.
PZO: What exactly is a double bass? And what is your style of double bass slapping?
Scott: A double bass is a very large bass. It's like the biggest member of the violin family, don't you think? I picked up double bass because I was into rockabilly music. That's what made, that's what all those bands used to have, double basses. It came from jazz and bluesy kind of roots, uh, rockabilly playing. That's where the slap thing came from. It's just kind of like a country and western thing, too. A hillbilly, swing, slap style of playing.
PZO: How did you learn to play double bass? Was it through videos, watching people, taking lessons, or did you teach yourself?
Scott: I taught myself. But yeah, watching videos basically. And going out and seeing other rockabilly bands and stuff that had double bass players. And just listening to records, watching videos.

Part 2:
PZO: What do you enjoy most about touring?
Scott: I think the travel thing is probably the best side, the biggest upside of touring. We get to see, we're only 26 years old and we've seen most of the world now. We've been all over Europe, Japan, New Zealand, America, Canada, and all over Australia as well. So, yeah, just that you know. Not every 26 year old gets to see that much of the world. And to go back to all those places all of the time.
PZO: Where is your favorite place to play?
Scott: I think at home. I think back in Australia is probably where I feel like playing the most, especially in Melbourne. Just 'cause that's where we're from. That's where all our friends are from. We feel a real kind of sense of community there. And I think that should be where people understand us the best. We write about the way we live and what we see around us. I feel like people in Melbourne can completely relate to that because they're under the same circumstances. And also just because the band has so much history there. The band has been together for so many years. And some of the people we play for in Melbourne have been coming to see us for years and years and years. So there's just something about being at home that I feel I like the most.
PZO: Who do enjoy playing with the most? Do you enjoy headlining a tour more than being a supporting act?
Scott: Well for both there are pros and cons. There's really no one in particular. We've been lucky to get on tons of good tours. We've had good tours whether we've been support or headliners. We've done some more headlining tours back home and even in Japan as well. And some of the supports we've done over in Europe and here have all just been incredible opportunities for us. But they've been good bands to stand and watch every night after we play. I like touring with bands that are friends. There's another band from Melbourne called Bodyjar who we've been friends with for years and years and years. And we've been out on tour with them a few times. And that's always fun to get to hang out with your mates and well as go out and tour at the same time.
PZO: What do you do to prepare yourself before you go on stage?
Scott: Try and warm up my voice so I don't sing out of tune.
PZO: Is it intimidating opening up for big acts such as Green Day and The Offspring?
Scott: Not necessarily intimidating. I mean we don't go out there with a defeated kind of attitude. We go out there with the attitude that we've got something to offer to the audience that is there. Ya know, we've got a half an hour to put our point across. If they like us, they like us. If they don't they're gonna get to see Green Day or The Offspring, who they pay their money for. So it's no great loss for them. It's a really good situation to be in. There's not really that much anxiety. It's more just an opportunity for us.
PZO: If you could plan your dream tour who would you play with?
Scott: Wow. It's hard to answer this question because I'd have to bring people back from the dead. Like John Lennon to put The Beatles back together.
PZO: Definitely!
Scott: Yeah.
PZO: What are some differences of playing home in Australia and playing in the United States - like positive and negative aspects?
Scott: Well there's not really that much difference apart from the kinds of shows we do. 'Cause obviously at home we've got more of a fan base and just kind of long history as well. But I think audiences are pretty much the same in most places. They don't really differ that much. The same things push the same buttons in people all over the world. So its not really that much different. The only difference is when we're here we're not in our own country. <laughs> The accent! That's what's different.
PZO: How do you like playing in the States?
Scott: Oh, it's cool, ya know. Like I said, it's just like playing everywhere else. The thing about the States is that it's a really really big challenge for a small band from Melbourne, Australia. America, from where we live, from where we come from, America seems like a really big and kind of overwhelming place. It's just 20 times the amount of people in America than there are in Australia. It's, like, yeah. It's a really big challenge. It's kind of like throwing yourself in the deep end to kind of come over here and give it our best shot. But that's the thing. That's why we do it. We like the challenge. Ya know, it keeps you on your toes.
PZO: Do you feel the United States is receptive to you guys and your music?
Scott: Yeah. I think so. When we came over in March and we did our own run of our own shows, our own headline shows, we'd get crowds every night. And we were filling rooms that would hold up to 500-600 people or something, I guess. And that's only after... Like, the first time we came here was only three years ago. So the way I look at it is, it took us years and years and years to play in rooms that big in Australia, and it's kind of happened over a few years which it seems like the ball is rolling.
PZO: Are you happy with your US success so far?
Scott: Yeah, absolutely!
PZO: What CD is your CD player right now?
Scott: A CD called "Everything Sucks" by The Descendants.
PZO: How do you give back to your fans?
Scott: Well we try and play as often as we can wherever we can all the time. We do a hell of a lot of touring. I think we probably tour a lot more than most bands, of that stature or whatever. We spend a lot of time on the road. And, ya know, we just try to make it fair. We try and keep our ticket prices down. We don't try to pull any rock star kind of bullshit. We meet people after the gigs. We always kind of just hang around after the shows and talk to the people that wanna wait around to meet us and stuff. And always, always, always respond to fan mail that gets emailed to me. Ya know, I've got my email address posted up on the website that fans always write, just write to. I like to read their comments, and if they've got questions I'll to write back and stuff like that. Just try and do as much as we can, ya know?
PZO: What keeps you grounded and optimistic?
Scott: Ah... God. What keeps me grounded? Um, making music. I think just concentrating on music, that keeps me grounded. There are so many lessons to be learned and so many songs and bands. I guess that's where I learned most of my philosophies from, keeping my eyes open, doing the right thing.
PZO: As you grow older, what lost quality of your youthful life do you miss the most?
Scott: Um, probably my fitness. <laughs>
PZO: <laughs>
Scott: I can't run as fast as I used to be able to.
PZO: And one more, a silly question: Do you have a celebrity crush?
Scott: <pause> No. No.
PZO: <laughs> That was a joke.
Scott: I have a crush on my girlfriend.
PZO: Aww, that's cool. That's cute. Can we print that?
Scott: Of course you can!

Living End Interview 08.18.06
SBMI Interviews Living End bassist Scott Owen
by Steveo Editor
September 3. 2006
At the Living End show at the House of Blues in West Hollywood, I had the pleasure to sit down with Scott Owen, bassist for The Living End. Let me just start off by saying that we didnt get around to doing the interview until about a little more than two hours before the opening band went on stage. After playing a show in Anaheim the night before and Im sure wanting to get ready for the show that night, Scotty was totally awesome for agreeing to still do the interview.
So, without further ado, SBMI gets the low down from The Living Ends stand up rhythm man.
SBMI: So, you guys just got done with Warped Tour along with NOFX who you've done tours with before and some new bands. How was that?
Scott: Yea, it was lots of fun.
SBMI: Now, you guys did the tour back in the late 90's, how is the tour different now than from earlier years?
Scott: It's alot different now than it was then. Back then it was more diverse. I mean we had Eminem and Ice-T up there playing with us and NOFX. It doesn't have that diversity anymore. Alot of the local bands sound the same nowadays. It was kind of like we were up there playing and everyone was saying 'Who the hell are these guys?' (laughs). It was good in a way though. It kind of made us stand out more. You know, different looking instruments, a different looking band.
SBMI: Now, you guys hail from Australia. How does the punk scene in Australia compare to the scene here in Southern California?
Scott: Australia doesn't have as large a population as here, so its not as segregated. There aren't really different scenes like you have here. Its much more spread out.
SBMI: I saw you guys started as a 50's cover band.
Scott: Yea, we were about 16 at the time and you know, thats the kind of music we were into at the time. 50's rock n roll. That was our interest. The style. The music. Then we kind of got into punk, jazz, retro, new wave. Then really to anything and everything. We like everything as long as its good. (laughs)
SBMI: You guys just released a new album. How does a typical Living End album come together?
Scott: Chris usually stays home and writes some songs. He brings them into the rehearsal room and jams them out on a acoustic guitar. We don't really write things around it as much as we have pieces that each of us have kind of played around with for a while and we see which ones fit. Usually, we have about sixty to seventy songs worth of material for an album. Like we took seventy songs down to fucking twelve for this album. It can take months to finally sculpt the songs that we want to use for the album.
SBMI: I don't want to keep you out here too long, cause I know you guys are starting soon. How bout you end this off with a cool tour story.
Scott: Last time we were in L.A. we partied at the Playboy mansion. (pauses). Im not going to say anymore about that, but I just wanted to throw that out there.

You may or may not remember The Living End from a few years back.
Their self-titled hit album produced "Prisoner of Society" and "Second
Solution" and showed the entirety of rock fans that it was okay to
play the stand-up bass again. Shortly thereafter, they seemed to
vanish with the small exception of a couple of tours and a few albums
that didn't match the success of their predecessors. To the contrary,
they had not dropped off the face of the earth, but rather showed up
on this year's Warped Tour to remind us that they were a sight to
behold and sound for sore ears and to get themselves back out there to
vast crowds of Americans. Needless to say that when I found out that
not only were they doing a solo tour, but that they were coming
through Phoenix, well I just had to ask for an interview. So here we
are—I got to sit down and talk with the ever-energetic front man,
Chris Cheney in the bands very plush tour bus mostly about music and
how great the most influential bands of all time were… and how much
better they sound on vinyl.
I read on your website that you're doing a tour with Dropkick
Murphy's and Less Than Jake. Are you looking forward to that?
Yes. Yes because we've done The Warped Tour before with the Dropkicks
and a couple of festivals in Europe. We've just been friends for a
really long time but we've never done a proper tour together—just a
couple of bands. We've been friends a long time and been drinking
buddies so I'm really looking forward to it and we haven't been to
Europe in a while, but we've got quite a big following there. We
haven't been to Island at all so that's going to be fun.
Are The Murphy's good drinking buddies?
Yeah, but only a few of them; you'd be surprised. There are only three
or four drinkers in the band. They're such a great band. I've been
into them for years now. We were sort of fans of them at first, but
then we did The Warped Tour that first year and they came over and
watched us play and we had a mutual love of AC/DC and The Clash
–similar musical tastes—and we just became friends. We've hung out
when they come over to Australia and, like, show each other pictures
of our kids on the net and all that kind of stuff.
You guys have toured The States quite a bit, is there anything
different about it now than the first time you came over?
Well, the musical climate has changed somewhat around us, but it's not
that much different really. You know, the same songs get the same
reaction. There's a few more people on board now than the first. It's
just a steady climb for us. Each time we come here, we've always spent
a couple of years away so it's very easy to sort of lose the audience.
But we're coming back later this year and possibly early next year, so
we're really giving it a shot this time so we don't just fall off the
radar. No other differences really. There are just a lot more
Hardcore/ Emo bands on the radio. I still think we sound just as fresh
now as ever and it's a good thing that there are all those bands
because it just makes us sound more unique.
It really is all the same crappy Sum 182 bands these days.
Warped Tour was very much like that. It was very strange.
I just wanted to see Joan Jett.
Yeah, she was great… just a great Rock 'N Roller.
It's generally a few years between releases for you guys. Does the
gap tend to affect your sales or staying power with fans?
I don't think we've lost fans, because there are people coming to the
shows that saw us with The Offspring or on the Green Day tour. I think
it's just a case of we needed to follow it up and it's very important
to get on the radio and as far as the general public is concerned, you
have to stay in the limelight and that's been the most difficult part.
That's why we've spent a great deal of time here this year and the
rest of what's left of it anyway. It's just a long way to come for us
and it costs a lot of money. But the reception each time for the last
shows and for the album has been great so we've just got to keep
following it up.
With your Old-school Rock/ Rockabilly sound, do you find that you
have a large diversity amongst your fans? On that note, how do fans
here compare to the ones at home?
I guess it's an advantage in a way that we started out a very much
Rockabilly kind of band before we finished high school. We had a very
Rockabilly/ Psychobilly sound, but we realized early on that we wanted
to have more of a melody and more pop elements to our songs just
because we liked that as well. We just didn't think there was room for
another band playing blues and singing about hot rods. We wanted to
take it beyond that. So we ended up getting a bit of a following in
Melbourne. It started there and branched out to people who were into
just plain rock music and to people who were into skinhead music, punk
rockers and rockabilly people and those were the kinds of audiences we
were playing to, which was great for us because we'd be playing
alongside punk bands and ska bands and all that. We seemed to appeal
to that audience. In Melbourne, if you come from that scene, you can
listen to The Specials and The Clash and The Sex Pistols and The Stray
Cats all in one listen which was exactly what we wanted to do; we
wanted to combine all those things. But I find over here, the scenes
are more segregated because of the population. There's enough people
in any one scene to support that scene whereas in Melbourne or in
Australia I don't think there is and you tend to mix-in with different
scenes which I think is healthy as a musician. Over here a group will
get all greasers and there's not too many punks or people that listen
to Ska, so it's a lot more segregated. I would say at this stage, the
majority of our audience is Rockabilly, which is fine, but that's only
one facet of what we do. If you see any one of our live shows, there's
only a few of those kinds of songs and there's pop songs in there; we
just do our thing not according to what genre we come under anymore.
I think, here, it's that people see the stand-up bass and just figure…
Yeah, of course… and the guitar licks and the creepers. That's cool.
It's our foundation. It will always be our foundation. We grew up
playing that kind of music—all the 50's stuff—we learned how to play
all the 50's standards and then just turned the amps up and played
them a little faster. We did our own hybrid of the Psychobilly thing.
I'll sit and listen to The White Album and I get a kick out of that.
I'm too much of a Beatles nut to be in just a Rockabilly band.
gaby2121
06-20-2007, 04:08 PM
But, who isn't a Beatles fan?
You've got to be.
The Living End originally started as a cover band. Since gaining
popularity, have you done an all covers show? If not, would you
consider it?
We haven't done one for a long while. We were still doing them when we
released our first EP, which was called "Hellbound." We were a cover
band just playing like twenty-firsts, weddings and stuff to try and
get money to finance recordings—so we could record our own material.
Back then we'd play a Living End's kind of show in a grungy club and
the next night we'd play a town hall somewhere in the country in
Australia doing "That'll Be the Day" and "Johnny B Good" and all those
kinds of songs. It was great because it was really good for our
playing.
The last time we did a gig like that was probably the other night at
the end of Warped Tour. It was our last day and they asked if we'd
play the Warped Barbeque. So we just got up and did a whole bunch of
covers and some of our own stuff.
I would've liked to seen that.
Yeah, it was cool because it showed where we'd come from. We'd played
a Cream song, a Chuck Berry, Eddie Cochran, Buddy Holly—all that good stuff.
The original punk rock…
Yeah, that's where it all comes from. What we're all listening to now,
that's where it came from. It's when music became rock music--
Zepplin, AC/DC and all that—we're just taking it one step further.
With your particular views on older music, would you say you prefer
vinyl to any of the newer sound formats out there now?
Yeah, I have quite a big selection of vinyl. It's clichéd, but there's
something about it. I just love the crackle and it has warmth and
depth to it you just don't get on anything else. It's just like a
piece of old, wooden furniture; there's so much more character. It's
more organic and you feel more comfortable in it than, say, a
sparkling, brand new chair that's made from stainless steel. It may
look nicer and be more practical but it's just not the same.
I'm so glad that I grew up when vinyl was still around and have an
appreciation of that because I think most kids now … We actually had
someone write a letter to the band –because we release all of our
stuff on vinyl—saying, "I hear that your new album is on vinyl, is the
packaging different kind of material or something?" They didn't know
that vinyl is a record and they thought it was different packaging.
They had no idea. It just goes to show …
If the band hadn't become the success that it is, what kind of day
jobs do you think everyone would have?
I think I would be in Graphic Design or some sort of artist. All I did
was play guitar and draw stuff. That is what I was going to do and
then the band kind of took off. Scott would probably do something
similar; he likes to draw as well. Andy would probably be working in a
café. That's his thing – making coffee and cooking and stuff.
Okay, so this next question is a fun one and one that I wanted to
know for me. Is it true that the toilet water swirls the other way
Down Under?
Yes. That sort of spun us out a little, the first time we came to
America. It goes the other way.
I think I could just sit there and watch it for hours.
I don't know the scientific reason behind it all, but it's fascinating
nonetheless. It's better than television.
We've reached the end of this interview. Thanks very much for
talking to me…Anything else you'd care to add?
Just that the new album is out now and check out the website. We've
had a blast on this trip and it's been a really good trip. We've met a
lot of good people and we can't wait until we can get back here again.
That's about it.

The mags dont have dates on them, but Vol 30 (CC cover) would be 2002 sometime. Judging by some of the stuff in the magazine, it's between the AC/DC gig (not sure when that was) and Septemeber.
Vol 23 is 2001, but sometime before Oct.

In it 'til the End
http://www.yourgigs.com.au/static/media/x300/92661_28410_.jpg
The Living End continue to roll on after more than 10 years of pumping out their catchy rockabilly hits.
Since their inception in 1994, The Living End have topped the ARIA charts, taken home more than a bucket load of awards, and after playing a gig in Texas last year, even scored a deal with Greenday frontman, Billy Joe Armstrong's record label Adeline Records.
yourGigs: So what have you guys been up to lately?
Scott Owen: Not a lot at the moment. We're having a bit of time off. We've got a few gigs coming up over the next month or so and then we're going to knuckle down and work on some new stuff - make another record at the end of this year. Between the end of last year and now we've been laying a bit low and getting a bit of feeling back in our legs after having toured so much.
yG: You've had a phenomenal past couple of years. What's been some of the highlights?
SO: Well I've gotta say last year our record [State of Emergency] debuting at number one was definitely a massive highlight. Being album number four and having years and years under our belt, it seems like more of an achievement to do that now than it was when we first begun and we were a new band. I feel as though there was more work and stuff put into it this time - more conscious work, I'd guess you say. We worked so hard on the record that it really was one hell of a reward when it finally came out. We basically spent all [last] year touring and that was full of highlights. We got to go to some excellent gigs and go on some good trips.
yG: Scoring a deal with Billy Joe's label is pretty sensational. How did you guys react?
SO: That was great. We went to South by South West (SXSW) last year in Austin and after the album came out in Australia and it had done well, went over there without a record label and put ourselves in front of all the yank industry. There were a few record companies that were interested in putting the record out and his was one of them. It was kinda romantic to have a bit of a tie to Billy Joe because he was the one who flew the flag for us in the early days and took us out on the road with Green Day in Australia and America years and years ago. So it's really flattering to think that he still wants to help us out as far as having a career goes. It's great.
yG: You've also been the only band to have songs voted into the Triple J Hottest 100 10 years running. That's a pretty amazing feat.
SO: It is a pretty amazing achievement. When we were growing up and just starting to play music, Triple J was becoming a really popular station; I remember when it was broadcast nationally to every country town all across Australia. It's always been a station with such good integrity, where they play what they want without being a commercial station. When we were starting out it was always a bit of a goal or a bit of a dream to be played on Triple J let alone getting 10 years in a row in the Hottest 100!
yG: You're really putting in the yards for Aussie punk-rock. How does it feel to be paving the way?
SO: Well, we've put in the hard yards for Aussie music as far as I'm concerned. We were brought up and had a pretty full on diet of Aussie music when we were in high school. There were so many good bands around - there always has and there still is - but harking back to the '80s there were so many phenomenonally good, world-class Aussie bands around and it seems a waste to not have the Aussie talent not overseas. So there is a bit of national pride in trying to get the exposure for Aussie bands.
yG: You're on the bill for a few festivals coming up. Anyone in particular you are looking forward to seeing?
SO: We're doing one in Western Australia with The Pixies. It will be very interesting to see them because I don't think they've played for a long time. But also the Great Escape is going to be excellent, there's a band called Gogol Bordello who I saw last year at SXSW, they were phenomenal. They were so good. Gypsy punks they call themselves, and they really are like gypsies. But there's lots of good stuff at the Great Escape, I'm hanging to see Bob Evans too, his record has been getting a hell of a play in my household.
yG: How has the US been treating you?
SO: It's been pretty good. Last year we did two pretty long tours there. We did a bit of a stint on the Warped tour which was good. They get about 10 or 15,000 people to each one of those gigs. We also did a lot of our own shows as well, and went back to some of the same venues that we've been to earlier and seemed to be building a bit of an audience there. We can still go to cities and play some decent-sized rooms and fill them, and that's kinda all you can ask for as far as I'm concerned.
yG: How do the American crowds and Aussie crowds compare?
SO: Well, a room full of people making lots of noise doesn't really differ that much no matter what part of the world you're in (laughs). But I guess the main difference is in Australia we've got a string of singles that we can count on, in the sense that people know them, whereas in America there's a lot more unknown songs so I guess that's a little more of different kind of a challenge. But it doesn't really differ a hell of a lot (laughs).
yG: What's some of the favourite places you've been or played at?
SO: We always like going to Japan the most. I think it's a completely different kind of thing over there. The gigs are different, the audiences are different over there - they've just got a completely different set of behaviours. But Japan's just a great place for music culture and finding rarities in record stores and videos of gigs. The shopping is amazing in Japan, the food is amazing, and everyone is so polite. It's always a bit of a highlight.
yG: Besides chicks, what's on your rider?
SO: Nothing too out of the ordinary, just enough beer to keep us and our crew happy (laughs). And that's basically all we're worried about!
