I don't think I've seen this track by track description before.

STATE OF EMERGENCY – TRACK BY TRACK – CHRIS CHENEY

1.' Til the End
Basically a song about searching for something and not giving up
until you get it. Addiction if you like, can be very frustrating.
i wanted this to sound like a big production number ala "live and let
die". One of the first written for the album and i always thought it
would be a great kick start to the album. After we finished this song
it set the bar for the rest of the album.

2. long live the weekend
This is no brainer rock'n'roll song. Simple message ....weekday 9-5
work sucks, weekends rule. We had The Who and Eddie Cochran in mind
with the attitude of this song.

3. no way out
Probably The most ambitious song on the album. I wanted to
explore and show a different side to the band which i think it does.
The opening line just popped into my head and the song grew from there.
I like the idea of starting a song with a question.
We wanted it to be really dynamic and to gradually build to a dramatic
climax which is a style of writing we havent explored enough that much.
Having said that , it was a song that came together very easily and
the lyrics basically wrote themselves.
The end section has about 4 voices and about 5 guitar parts that came
from the original demo.

4. we want more
I find that in terms of where popular music is sitting at the
moment, there is way too much style and not enough substance.
probably one of the more Rockabilly influenced tracks on the album.
It has the anthemic stomp element that i think is a bit of a trademark
for us.

5. wake up
This song is about a search for the truth more than anything. We
live in a society where we are fed so much conflicting information that
I find it very hard to know what is the truth and what is a manipulated
story . I think being aware of this and attempting to understand all
the different sides is the first step. Its probably one of the most
catchy songs on the album but also one of the darkest. It was very
important to try and capture a mood with this track.

6. what's on your radio
This song is all about the energy. What would A Living End album
be without a couple of fast songs. This is us letting off steam and
going for it.
Its really got nothing to do with a radio station as such but
finding out where someone is situated in a mental sense. "what are you
into , whats happening, what direction are you heading at the moment",
that sort of thing. The only thing it really needed was an intro so
Andy gave us his best snare drum morse code impression.

7. nothing lasts forever
This could be viewed as a negative statement but i like to think of
it as a positive one.
We all know that nothing lasts forever so make the most of it while
you can. This song deals with a very typical working class couple whos
married life hasn't worked out as well as they dreamt it would,
particularly for the wife. The sad part is that she is aware of the
problem and the way shes treated but she pretends its not happening .
Ignorance is bliss. This was another song where the melodies came very
easily and its always the best way, it felt like i had heard it before.
We tried to make the chorus as big and lush as possible.

8. one step behind
This song was written at a time when there was a bunch of young
Australians being interrigated for drug smuggling.
I cant even begin to imagine how isolated and desperate you must feel
in that kind of situation guilty or not.
It attempts to tell the story from the perspective of the accused
and the accuser. We wanted the verses to have a very Police like feel.
We thought this song could do with some horns at the end for a bit of
extra grunt so we enlisted the help of the mighty Hunters and
Collectors horns and it just worked so well. "Power and the passion"
outro being the template of course.

9. reborn
This is one of the oldest songs on the album. I like the fact that
its made up of lots of different elements. It has a swing feel but with
a pop chorus and some 70's Queen style guitar harmonies thrown in for
good measure. The song itself can mean whatever you want , its open to
interpretation.

10. order of the day
Communication breakdown and the dissolving of a relationship.
Mistakes and regrets have been made and subsequently forgiveness is
requested but easier said than done. I wanted this to sound like an
old Phil Spector kind of break up song. It even has the "Be My Baby"
drum pattern at the start and quite a lot of 60's style harmonies.
Scott played with a bow on his bass in the middle section . The song
took a while to put together but once finished it was worth it.

11. nowhere Town
We wanted this to really groove and be as dancy as possible . It
has a Specials kind of feel and weve always loved that English two
tone ska scene. The theme deals with just trying to escape from a
persona and not wanting to be bugged by anyone. Trying to find a place
where there are no restrictions or rules and you can just be anonymous.
"Where the winners always win and the sinners always sin".

12. state of emergency
For a time there it felt like every time the news came on,
somewhere had been declared a state of emergency. The song deals with
the paranoia and uncertainty generated from this. It also has a very
positive message and promotes unity and not being oppressed by fear
whether it be a false alarm or the real thing. Musically its one of the
more heavy riff style tunes on the album. Particularly the solo which
could be accused of having hard rock influences...thats fine. Genre
wise, I like to think of us as a rock band before anything else.

13. black cat
Superstition and karma if you believe in them can be very
powerful things. I really believe that what goes around comes around
and you get what you give. This song deals with people who do the wrong
thing and expect to get away with it with no repercussion.
Scott came up with this riff and a couple of hours later we had
most of the song in the bag. This song became a monster to record and
at the end you can even hear Andy in the background saying his hi-hats
fell apart!!

14. into the red
The oldest song on the album and was a possible contender for the
last album.
We really felt like we wanted a straight up rock'n'roll song to
close the record. Its not about being in debt but rather a song about
an amphetamine fuelled night out.

Madtwins! :D

PunkTV.ca: Now kids can see you, you’ve been viewed like half a million times on YouTube but I came across this Mad Twins cartoon. These guys just cooked this up for you?

Ya they’re fantastic. I saw one the other day and it was hysterical. It was really quite scary, the likeness was quite accurate. We haven’t met those guys but I’ve heard a lot about them and seen a couple of their clips. It’s really crazy, I’d never imagined when we started the band that people would draw cartoons for us and stuff, it’s really wild.

I love that this is a Canadian interview too, whew.

The invite was put out there to come and play and promote Australia and stuff and I had no idea the history of the relationship with Canada and Australia. It’s been quite strong and I didn’t realize, something like 200 000 Australians come to Canada every year and 100 000 Canadians go to Australia and it’s wild.

I will be one of those 100,000. And I loved his quote about being cold.

I’m struggling. I got lost before trying to get back to the hotel and I had to keep moving because I thought I was going to freeze on the spot.

On 12 June The Living End bring its fifth studio album and come out for some concert dates in Germany and Austria.

The Living End are in their home country Australia as one of the most important bands of the modern era. Started in 1994 as a rockabilly band with punk influences in their home town of Melbourne to work, The Living End in recent years to a fixed size in the Australian rock circus top. Their single "Prisoner of Society" from the year 1998, almost a year as an anthem in the Australian charts and has since been in the mother country of "AC / DC and Crowded House is still one of the biggest hits of the Australian music history.

The band is on a specific musical direction, however, is almost impossible: this is evident not only on their since 1998 has been published four studio albums, but especially for the concerts of the Australians: While singer / guitarist Chris Cheney's guitar solos on the blow of a Brian Setzer released on the audience, climbs Scott Owen playing his bass. Shortly thereafter there is a hard number in the spirit of Led Zeppelin in the set, then a fast punk piece, in which the drummer Andy Strachan duels with solo singers Cheney delivers.

After years of waiting is now finally on 12 June, the fifth studio album by the band "White Noise" in Germany.

For the production of "White Noise" was John Agnello (Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr.) are obtained, which it succeeds in convincing the live energy of the band into the studio to transfer. For the finish won The Living End studio legend Brendan O'Brien on board, at the same time also on the current album by AC / DC and Bruce Springsteen worked.

Just before publication of "White Noise" are The Living End, with her new album in baggage after eight long years of abstinence eventually returned to Europe on the stage.

White Noise is reviewed in this month's edition of UK magazine Guitarist (issue 314)

The Living End - White Noise - Dew Process
****

As this fifth studio album proves again , Chris Cheney is a monster player who balances melody and technique brilliantly, mixing elements of Setzer, Angus Young and good old classic hard rock. Gretsch guitars and belting valve amps make the core tones, and he's also brough imself an electro-harmonix POG - evidenced in the DC-meets-Green Day How Do We Know- and a wobbly pedal for Loaded Gun. It's rocky punky goodness with singable choruses, albeit reaching into post-Purple rock riffage in Make The Call, and sixties pop in Kid. Great band, good album.

... we all know it's not a POG. I'm so bored right now I think I'll write to them and tell them.

Neil is from New Zealand, but Paul Hester and Nick Seymour are both Victorians, so they win by majority. Mark Hart is from the US so he doesn't help, although Tim Finn was a member of the band briefly, so that tied up the Aus / NZ balance. The new drummer is from the US, so in theory they are now a majority US membered band. Ouch!

Well its kind of saying that he is going to do Ob La Di isn't it?

but i read on the website of it, that they are apparently doing 8 songs, so i'm guessing it'll be like 7 songs by themselves and then one with all of them

I definitely remember owning that esky magazine! I'm pretty sure I had all of them. If I remember correctly that magazine didn't go for very long (it followed the 'recovery' magazine and then folded but then 'blunt' came out which was pretty much the same thing) Anyway, not sure why i'm posting this because I obviously do not have it anymore.

 quite idiotic interview. Guys looks like they didn't sleep enough. But we loughed very hard! especially about Brian Setzer Orchestra question. We should od an episode of our cartoon about this crazy idea and how the don't know whan to do with 17 peaces band.
p/s and we was super happy to see Andy with his new hairstyle. Scott in Dr.Martebs boots looks so old school hot!!!!

Guitarist (UK) - January 2010.

White Noise made it into their 50 best guitar albums of 2009.

"Chris Cheney is a Gretsch-toting monster of a player as evidenced by this fifth album channelling the likes of Brian Setzer and Angus Young into a compelling, punky formula. There's a fine balance between melody and technique, and there's even a POG thrown in for good measure too - always a pleasure; never a chore." They also recommend white noise, make the call and kid.
