Agreed.
I remember when I was a kid, about 8 years old, and spending new years on my uncles property in toowoomba while my dad and his brothers got shit faced and it was Johnny Cash, Slim Dusty and Charlie Pride on high rotation 24/7....
So while I grew up with country music it wasn't til I was in my late teens/early 20s that I discovered him again... I just scored "Personal File" from work.... basically a whole bunch of rare and unreleased stuff that his estate has decided to release.
Favourite songs include "I've Got Stripes", "Wanted Man", "One Peice At A Time", "Send A Picture Of Mother", "I Still Miss Someone" and "Nearest Thing TO Heaven" to name a few. As far as covers go, his version of "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" by Hank Williams that he did with Nick Cave continues to blow my mind. Oh, and Soundgarden's "Rusty Cage"!
"Walk The Line" was excellent but, as Kev said, it got a whole lot of bandwagon jumpers on board.

I like to rile people by telling them I want to name my youngest born son Sue after "A boy named Sue" and it shits them no end....
That and it's also a "Swingers" reference...

On a related note check out JC's daughter, Rosanne. I have "Black Cadillac" in my collection (it was free as well).
it's not quite alt-country.... just good old hurtin' acoustic songs.

Agreed on the bandwagon thing.
I got into him in my senior years of high school, I wasn't huge on him then but now I'm huge on him and he is a big influence on me. I bought The Legend boxset at the start of the year as a birthday present and i've got his latest album, some really lovely songs on that. I have many favs, but I can really relate to "San Quentin" at the moment.

i love san quentin and how he relates to the prisoners so much. they all love it too. Starkville city jail is a classic too
Not only is Hurt an awesome cover, but it also has one of the best film clips I have ever seen. The emotion in it is great.

I agree with you all. I don't see what all the disagreeing with him being country is though, he was country sometimes, he was rock sometimes, it's all good.
