HOW DO WE KNOW
RAISE THE ALARM
From what we have heard so far, which one tickles your fancy the most?

I think there should be a 'Both' option. :p
How Do we Know.
intro is TOO good!!!! I get freaking excited when I hear it on my mobile phone :D
BUT, the lyrics for Raise The Alarm are strong.Chris still same surprising!

RAISE THE ALARRRUMM!!!! ftw
Keep in mind that the first live version you hear of anything, might not be anything like - or at least quite different - to what you first heard, once it makes it to album.
Maitland Street, Reborn, and Long Live the Weekend come to mind...
MisspentYouth
12-02-2007, 08:59 AM
I would vote for Raise the Alarm's lyrics and How Do We Know's guitar. I can't decide though!
May, how was Maitland Street different before it was recorded? It's my favorite TLE song.

I'm going to go for Raise The Alarm cos it has the better song name :)

How do we know because it has a kick ass riff, an awesome catchy chorus, it reminds me of stevie wonder for some reason and because it has a false ending and a badass solo.
Raise the Alarm is a new exploration lyrically but I don't think the song has anything particularly special to offer unlike how do we know. I like raise the alarm... I don't love it.

I like when bands do that, because then you can compare the changes in sound and/or lyrics when the other version is released. It tends to confuse some people when they go to sing along as well. :D That happened to me with LLTW. :p

For those wondering if Chris is Athiest or Religious just check out the first couple of lines of Raise the Alarm. They are certainly to the point of what he believes! Therefore I definately agree with thelivingvines that this song is a new exploration lyrically.

Listening to Raise The Alarm, the verses remind me of a Placebo song. same kinda feel in the riff as Bitter End
*edit*
For me, How Do We Know is hands down the better song

'How do we know' is a bit too slow for me. If they sped it up just a bit i think it would be heaps better (Though the main guitar lick would be harder to play, but I'm sure Chris could manage...)
The begining of 'Raise The Alarm' (before the drums) reminded me of Stariway To Heaven. Is that even part of the song or does it start when the bass drum comes in?
Grumma
12-02-2007, 06:06 PM
I was wondering that too.
I'd say it's when the bass drum comes in - otherwise it'd just sound rediculous

those songs just owned all of 'soe'
The first sounded a little like 'Cochise' by Audioslave - the bass beat is a little anyway. The second reminded me of MA-era, bit lighter. I preferred Raise the Alarm.

I hear so much RATM in how do we know. I don't know if that's intentional or not... I totally agree with the Cochise thing too... it's basically the same point I guess, minius the obvious.
I love it, but having said that, I wouldn't want a whole album of songs pushing in that direction.

even though these songs are live, they still sound a little rough and tumble. a little heavy rock, a lot more like the tle from the past. maybe theyre returning to their roots? i hope so!
that being said, i think raise the alarm is the song for me out of the two! it just hit me right away when i listened to it

I still can't decide which one i like better. How do we Know has an awesome guitar part in the beginning and is a great song, but Raise the Alarm is more like The Living End we know and love, so i don't think i'm gonna vote.

Haha, word of these little recordings has indeed travelled to the band themselves...
Anyway the new stuff is coming together a treat and we are so keen for everyone to hear what we've been doing. It would have been nice to play a few more the other night but we don't want the entire new album to be online just yet. The two that we did play ("How Do We Know?" and "Raise the Alarm"....working titles) are still in early stages and only about a week old. As you can imagine we are still wrestling with them a bit - by that I mean trying to remember lyrics! We've done a couple of lots of demos and put down about a dozen or so tunes. Trust me the online (pissed) versions don't come close to what they should / will sound like. There is some variety on there but in a good way. Most of it is pretty ballsy and not too fancy. Rule #1..... It must translate live.

It's interesting, I might've misheard the lyrics, but I thought it sounded like he was being ironic (and not talking about himself personally). Like Paul Kelly does a lot, especially in a song like "God Told Me To" (Kelly's an atheist). Here, it was a line that sounded like "I'd rather risk my faith than lose my fame", which made me think he sounded sarcastic, but if I misheard that, I'm probably chasing a moot point. Can anyone hear it more clearly?
Also, I love that song to bits! It's a pity about the extended intro, only because that'd hamper its chances as an awesome radio single!
does anyone think that TLE sounded more careless and fun earlier?
that's all good - to have serious lyrics, but they used to sing about everything ironically, and in the meantime the tune was same fun and had more rock'n'roll in it's heart.
I love new songs, but also it would be nice to hear more tunes like Carry Me Home,Into The Red,From Here On In,ICGYWIHG...remember Monday! serious theme but very inflammatory melody!

Hehee, I know, I habitually think in the long-term. :p
Of course, the more I listen to the song, the less it sounds ironic, and more sympathetic/personal. Which seems to fly in the face of Staring at the Light, if I got the right interpretation of that one, buuut this is going off on a tangent! Thanks for uploading those files, too, Mel!

All I can swear is that the lyrics of Raise the Alarm did seem personal to me. I don't know if it was the way Chris was singing them or just the lyrics themselves but I do believe that he wasn't being ironic. However, I could accept the fact if it were meant to be. It just seems like a serious subject and all. With Monday for example it was the actual tune that made it seem so fun and lively and not so much the lyrics. They directly were about the Dunblane massacre and you could tell he had been affected by it. Anyway, that's all just my opinion and you would have to ask Chris himself to know exactly what he means by the lyrics he writes. We can only just guess what they mean. :)

Atheism is religion, they believe that the thought of a High Power is just Bogus.
Other wise, its just no religion, they just don't care.
I vote Raise The Alarm, its fast, and the Lyrics kick ass.

Without wishing to side-track, atheism literally means 'no religion'. It's like saying that 'not playing chess' is a hobby. Nuh uh.
Given how different pre-album versions of other songs have been in the past (Long Live The Weekend, 'Til The End) I'm curious as to how these will end up. Hopefully neither will be another Living Underground!

I hope not either. I think when Living Underground and LLTW first were heard, most people liked LLTW more. It's interesting that these two newbies are either both loved by people, or its fairly evenly split for favourites. Hopefully that means they're both hear to stay.

I am allowed to have my own interpretation of the lyrics just like everyone else is as well as my own opinion. No need to get angry about it okay. Besides I am not close minded I just have my beliefs and they are important to me. So I'd appreciate if you both didn't criticise my thoughts because I"m happy to listen to yours without offending you back. I am not angry or annoyed in any way that Chris chose to write those lyrics, he is also entitled to his own thoughts as well. I ended up voting for it. It's lyrically much better than How Do We Know. I still can't fully decided between them though. I'll change my mind a million time from now til the album comes out.
Raise The Alarm just sounds more...umm...TLE...
Not punk, or rockabilly, or anything they get typecast with, but the best of the magic that is...them!
How Do We Know sounds a little too try-hard. Like a bad acca dacca or motley crue cover band gone bad - imo...
And I really like the fact that Chris has been ballsy enough to come out and try some new lyrical ground on Raise The Alarm!
But... I always seem to go for the anti-single in these things, so whats the bet How Do We Know gets the gong? :p

Funnily enough I was came in here to post the same thing about Raise The Alarm - except put it in a negative light. That they aren't really trying anything new.

i like the new songs.... but i havnt how do we know? .. yes it sounds a bit different like the other songs of the living end.. but i think MUSIC is TIME.. in my opinion all artists have to play music which the people like... and the people... most of people... like modern music... for example: Nelly Furtado... sche has chanched her music.. for a few years she has made pop. now she has chanches her style into RNB.... isnt it?! So that is something you always have to mention,.. i think

Raise The Alarm. Such creative lyrics. Particularly the 'we choose what we see, and we see what we choose to believe' line.

i like the new songs.... but i havnt how do we know? .. yes it sounds a bit different like the other songs of the living end.. but i think MUSIC is TIME.. in my opinion all artists have to play music which the people like... and the people... most of people... like modern music... for example: Nelly Furtado... sche has chanched her music.. for a few years she has made pop. now she has chanches her style into RNB.... isnt it?! So that is something you always have to mention,.. i think
Wouldn't the band be better off playing music they like first and foremost?
Fans come a distance second

"Fuck the fans, we're doing this for us" haha.

I'd agree with that!
popular music isn't always good.well...it's really shitty in most cases

Can't really say I blame them. They've been around for a while now lol

I meant more them sticking to the whole rockabilly thing just cos they know that's what their fans like.
Bound to get stale eventually

I personally don't really agree, i think metallica do what they think is popular, just they don't do it very well, specially if we're talking about the St Anger album.. tried to go all offbeat and heavy like system of a down at the time, and failed :p
The Living End are hardly a sell out band, you can tell they love their music and you know Chris will never stick to one style because he likes to challenge himself and progress..

Yep. That was the first thing that came to my mind as well.
Maybe that's why I'm not as big on How Do We Know :p (not a RHCP fan)

If anything, the guitar/drums in the chorus (around when Chris is singing "Turn on the light" and the others chime in with "How-do-we-know") remind me of Kashmir. :p Maybe it's just a similar chord progression or something.

Because thrash was popular when they helped start it out?
And garage quality recording was popular in 2004?
If Metallica were a sell out they'd keep releasing MoP, And Justice + Black clone albums
And to the non-believers, that's exactly what they've done.
But there'd be no telling a metallica fan like you that, would there Grumma?

Neither of them have grabbed me by the genitals and said 'I am awesome' but they're okay... I reckon Raise Alarm is the stronger of the two. How Do We Know just seems like they were trying to hard to write a bitchin rock number.

Well, summer is almost here too. We've had a weird May though, because a lot of the days it has been chilly out. I, of course, throw socks on with certain pairs of shoes. HDWK has had a great influence of sock taking off though. ;)
