News just in...

The Living End are heading into the studio with producer John Agnello at Water Music Studios in Hoboken, New Jersey. Agnello forged a name for himself in the heady days of the ‘90s, working with Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jnr and The Hold Steady. Water Music Studios has also played host to a wealth of music industry heavyweights including U2, Evan Dando and Ryan Adams.

While The Living End have been around for more than a decade, they continue to produce fresh tunes that appeal to both old fans and new converts alike. And these new demos are no exception. The Living End hit the road earlier this year under The Longnecks moniker to trial the new material in a live setting, giving them instant feedback on the new tracks and capturing the live energy they are so well known for.

“After quite a long period of writing/demoing we are keen as hell to get in the studio and make the best record of our career. We are more excited about the new material than any time before in The Living End's history - seriously!” says frontman Chris Cheney.

“There is a heaviness and depth to the new stuff that we simply haven't had before. We haven't worked alongside producer John Agnello before but judging from the rock records he's done, we feel he can capture the energy and attack that we are after.

Agnello heard the new demos from The Living End and was blown away. He is really excited to be working with the band.

"From the moment I heard the demos of the new songs, I knew this would be a special record. Chris's vocals really blew me away and the lyrics are great. There are some real standout songs, among them, "Kid" and "Waiting For The Silence." It also doesn't hurt that they are my nephew's favorite band of all time and he's been up my ass about meeting them since I told him," says Agnello.

The Living End will then be stepping into mix the record with legendary producer Brendan O’Brien, who will be mixing the album in between his commitments recording the new AC/DC album and the new Pearl Jam record.

“We are very excited that Brendan O'Brien will be at the mixing desk and although we've never worked with him either, we feel his track record speaks for itself.

The Living End’s first album on Dew Process/UMA is due out in mid-July.

I think that the fact they were working with such an inflexible producer probably increased their stress and homesickness, hopefully this will feel more like a sweet holiday or something... hey, I know that Chris won't be able to rest easy, but hopefully easier than last time! :p

Fritz
03-28-2008, 01:37 PM
MA was only shit to TLE cos they made a bad decision in who they got to produce the album, tried to make TLE sound very non-TLE.

Yeah, I don't think they'll get compared as much as we think.

just a little bit excited about the new record... and im pretty sure this album will be nothing like modern artillery.. which was still great but not a real TLE rocker...
Mark Trombino did the same thing with Gyroscope's Are You Involved?.. he kind of took the band out of the music if you know what i mean..

Although I only own FHOI and SOE, the tracklisting on MA looks better than Roll On, and then from what I've heard from it's miles ahead of SOE.
on MA, is So What? a cover?

Caity
03-28-2008, 11:46 PM
Ah, nope. I don't think any songs on MA are covers.

Shadow

It's a country-style track. Buy MA and have a listen.

I've been sampling a bit of the hold steady album.... guitars sound great, the vocalist is nothing like chris so there's not much I can say about that. The one thing that does strike me though- compared with the TLE type sounds we're used to- is that the drums don't pop out of the recordings like I think they boys will want them too. Hopefully they'll be adamant about fucking huge drums. They're such a staple part of the TLE sound, especially since Andy joined and they need to be big. Launay sure as hell got that right on SOE.

Colezy
03-29-2008, 04:19 AM
Yeah with the new songs, I noticed that the drums play a much bigger part, same with scotty and his bass..much more prominent and funky sounds!
Chris' guitar is still there loud and clear and with PLENTY of riffs, but yeah, they gotta keep those drums in there!

I hope that made sense...it's 3.40am!

thelivingvines
03-29-2008, 04:44 AM
it's an intrinsic part of being a three piece I guess- the boys know what they want, and thta have the experience to know how to get it now- this'll be one of the greats. I know it.

I am so excited about this album, especially because of the 'rock' factor :D the first thing that came to mind when i read this was that I hope it doesn't feel like MA to the guys half way through.

So fucking excited, I have a feeling that this will be the best TLE record of all. yay :D

Colezy

The one thing I really want to happen, is for them to capture that live sounding element. I'd say that 90% of the songs played on the tour work really well in front of an audience and need to have that feel to them once recorded.

I don't know exactly what kind of sound/feel they're going for on this album, but for it to sound as good as the songs do live, they've got to get that "live atmospheric" thing going on.

:)

I used the word 'live' so many times in those to paragraphs that I had to edit it big time :p

generally they'll do a tour around the same time the album is released - although it's normally main cities - Melb, Syd, Bris, Adelaide, perhaps Perth. Then after a month or two they'll do a big-mother tour. So Arin, you might be set for September!

and on the subject of MA - the band didn't enjoy the process, and the album didn't turn out exactly how they wanted. but if you ask me, under all that, there is still a good album there!

To me, I'd rather they have a really good studio sound than trying to emulate a live sound. If they want a live sound then just do a live album. I think the "live atmospheric sound" can only be achieved in a live environment ie. a gig.

now if they got a live sounding recording by using older recording methods then that would be something else!

and on the subject of MA - the band didn't enjoy the process, and the album didn't turn out exactly how they wanted. but if you ask me, under all that, there is still a good album there!
yeah definately a good album, just that if they enjoyed making it and all I think it would've been better like it would've captured a bit more excitement in the songs

Colezy
03-30-2008, 01:20 AM
Hahaha. Here's me reading all of the posts by you guys, yet i still didn't click with what it was i was thinking of, which was:

That I hope that when they tour for it that it happens in almost the same was as SOE did. Released in feb, two months later they tour the capital cities, 4-5 months later they tour regionally. Hopefully if this album is released on time, or even a little after, they will tour in september-ish and then again in the new year which is when i hopefully move to melbourne (well around feb anyway). That means I can possibly go to the tassie gig/s and all of the melbourne gigs cos i'll be going to/from melbs anyways with me moving and all!

What's the bet it doesn't work out like that though! :p And I also bet that if the tours are when i am all moved in over in melbs, that i'll want to go back to tassie for the gigs here cos i'll feel as though I am missing out haha.

Oh dear. Yes, it was a boring night at work tonight and that's why I sat around thinking about TLE!

that's gonna be a pretty quick recording to get it out in July as the way it's written makes it sound like they aren't already there recording.

going to have to get saving quick after i get back from vegas to try and get over to aussie for the tour. been trying to persuade my other half that moving out there would be a good idea so hopefully a trip over might help!

Actually, after album 5 drops - Andy will be the first drummer that TLE have had that's drummed on more than two albums (although it could be argued that FHOI counts because of the two new songs, but... just, no).

So, i'd like to think he'd escaped the "new guy" tag by then :P.

I just realized I have TLE in my side of the land!! woah!
If they have been recording since like 2 weeks ago this means they are closer to me. I might have to give them a visit....

God I hope they are! Then it'll become a live rarity and they'll bring it back for a show here or there in a few years time:D
