Chorus:
All that I'm hearing from you
Is white noise,
White noise.

If looks could kill
I'd be in trouble right now
Time stands still
When you're around

I gave you all my time
And you gave me all your lines
And you just come around
To say goodbye

Now here we stand
With our hearts in our hands
Squeezing out all the life

All that I hear
Is a message unclear
What else is there to decide?

(Chorus)

You promised me your soul
And then left me in the cold
No warning and without a reason

Your placing yourself in a world of mistrust
Making excuses it's not you, it's us
How can something unspoken seem so loud?

And now all that I'm hearing from you...

(Chorus)

The operator comes on the line
Said, "Hurry up man, cos you ain't got much time..."
White noise, white noise...

(Chorus)

p.s.
Chris's lyrics are finally back...tune sounds like London Calling The Clash to me.

I LOVE WHITE NOISE BECAUSE SCOTT SLAPS! :D

I only realised earlier today when listening to it on Triple J :p

Habibster
06-03-2008, 10:55 PM
yeah, it's awesome to see a bit of the slap back :)

i was a bit disappointed when i heard there were going to be 11 songs on the album, but then i thought about it for a few more seconds and realised thats its better to have 11 awesome songs than 14 average ones. I think i was more disappointed that rats missed the cut, but hopefully it'll be a b-side on the first single..we'll get to hear it earlier :)

Deadcat Kaye

hahaha WELL I think we/I got the wrong impression...coz it didn't EXACTLY say it was ont he album...But it gave an awesome description and there was something about it never hitting the reording studio until it went down like a storm at TLN show.

NO HARM THOUGH
Still gonna hear it again! and I'm absolutely pumped for knowing that! :D

White Noise, How Do We Know. :p

LOL!! I was kind of guessing those two would be on the album. But what are the other nine?

strahanie
06-04-2008, 01:13 PM
So i reckon these are on the album:

White Noise
How Do We Know
Waiting For The Silence
Moment In The Sun
Kid
November
Make The Call
Loaded Gun
Raise The Alarm

thats nine, so some other contenders:

Suzy
21st Century
She's Calling Out
Hey Hey Disbeliever
Faith
New Frontier

and out of those my faves are Faith, HHD n Suzy

Damn, still something like 6 weeks til we find out

Yep, it wasn't very clear but, the way I read it was that Triple J were being played demo tapes of songs by Chris or something and they wrote a little bit about the ones they liked the sound of - but it never confirmed that any on the list were IN or OUT.

Also, the interview would've been at least a month or two old (maybe even three, it might say in the article) before it was printed in Jmag.

I'm sure we'll have a tracklisting by the end of June, so don't stress - and don't forget about those two other songs, "Beware The Moon" and "Sum Of Us".

How has everybody heard so many of the new songs? Is it just from going to the Longnecks gigs, or do alot of you have live audio files?

I know sharing isn't allowed I'm just curious.

Colezy
06-04-2008, 10:14 PM
I heard them all at serveral of the longnecks gigs...after you'd been to a few of them, you start to know the songs and what not and can decide on what you do/don't like :)

I recorded some two of the gigs on my phone (both were pretty crappy quality, one more so than the other).

Plus some of us took a few videos here and there. And other people have posted the stuff on youtube, obviously.

Matt
06-04-2008, 10:17 PM
You know what I really hope?

That there's an instrumental track on the album. That would freaking kick so much arse it'd be unbeleivable.

Colezy

Yeah..they pulled off a few awesome jams/instrumental type things throughout the longnecks gigs!

Yeah there's a few...some were posted by shannon but you had to be super quick cos then set them to private :p

New Frontier anyone:confused:

I'd say its more likely HHD.... the riff is kind of "dark and funkified" (a little bit), besides while "Hey Hey Disbeliever" is a really catchy chorus, is that the best title for a song...

Those videos were put up by Shannon on here a few weeks back. They were all put up for about a day or so then set to private.

They're set to private cos TLE would prefer it if stuff from White Noise/the longnecks tour wasn't leaked on the net. I know that Chris has said that he has accepted that fact that in this day and age that stuff will end up on youtube anyway, but still, they're not asking for much (IMO).

I'm also really hoping that HHD will make the cut. I don't think that New Frontier will be (I hope so though!) and I would also love to see/hear Faith, but I reckon that's not going to happen either.

Was Suzy mentioned in jmag?? I know that Rats was and that Rae then confirmed for us that it ISN'T on the album, but I hope Suzy is too :)

BUT! In saying all of that, I love White Noise (single) and from the one time I've heard it, I love Make The Call.

I know theres various methods to record live bootlegs (I don't mean professionals, like a fan doing it) and they result in various qualities...I'd like to look more into it, because it'd be cool to be able to do it myself to have a document of the shows I go to. But anyway, It was strange how much higher quality that one clip of "Disbeliever" somebody put up on youtube from St. Kilda was than pretty much all the other longnecks videos...anyone know why it came out so much better? Is it the type of camera?

When I saw Radiohead last summer, a guy next to me had a device that looked like an old school tape recorder (the kind that are like rectangular with a little microphone attached by a curly cord) only...digital?? And he was holding out an attached little mic to record it...I figured it was probably picking up a decent, kinda muddy recording of the show the guy would just have for himself. But when I downloaded a bootleg of the show a few days later, it turned out it was that same guys bootleg (you could hear me and my friend laughing and saying stupid shit on quiet spots inbetween songs) and it was amazingly clear, probably just short of soundboard-rip quality...not only listenable, but like something I'd pay for if a band had released it officially. I'd love to find out what this device is...imagine being able to have an almost cd-quality bootleg of every show you go to...you could have a whole dated library of shit you saw over the years!!! Not only to check out new songs as they're debuted, but just to have the shows (so you can show the whipper-snappers what they were missing when youre an old bastard)...I mean, I love listening to old TLE live at the wireless' and shit and its not like I haven't heard all those songs 80-million times. There might even be more than like one Roll On-era concert out there! I'll try and find a link to that Radiohead bootleg, maybe somebody can tell me what the device is?

This is probably way off topic and im sorry, but theres too many informed and cool people on this board for me not to bring my questions here. I know I'm not a very dynamic and well-known figure on this board (I'm no Glenn), but having been a board queer since 01', I love ya'all : )

Sarah
06-16-2008, 04:48 PM
I do my bootlegs on my digital camera. The first few bootlegs I did turned out ok (that is far superior to all the phone clips on youtube) soundwise, but for various reasons the vid/picture was shit. I've got some clips from the Longnecks Corner gig from a few years back, the same as the ones Luke uploaded to youtube. The picture from mine is nothing compared to those, but the sound is slightly better. Then i got a new camera that could take better photos in general, but the sound in that is fairly average...its okay for accoustic sets, but it doesn't like real loud noises, so it distorts for everything i want it for.

And while i'm at it, I don't understand why people insist on uploading 40 seconds of crap to youtube all the time. You can't see anything, most the time you can't even make out what song it is, and if you could they don't bother putting up the whole song anyway!

The Dying Start
06-16-2008, 05:18 PM
I concur on all accounts.

And I haven't really been in the bootleg market, I've never even attempted it with a digital still camera like alot of people do. The Clipsal one my mate did on his video camera from the back of the crowd at an outdoor show and it was passable, but not fantastic. I suggest some google searching with a few different keywords, and you might get some good ideas on how best to go about it.

Or you could sleep with a sound tech and get him to plug you into the sounddesk!

EDIT:

A spot of information i came across... (http://www.imperfectly.com/boots/faq2.htm)

I only ever tried once. that was at the first Palace show in '06 where i got sick of being trampled in the mosh so decided THAT would be my night for photos and whatnot, and the next night barrier it up... which worked.
Aaaaanyway; i have a sony cybershot, one of the very first models i believe and the sound on that recording's pretty damn great... too dark for it to pick up much though on the video...

The Dying Start
06-17-2008, 11:45 AM
As much as i love photographing and recording bands, i generally end up pissed off at the end of the night that i didn't enjoy the show as much coz i was too busy concentrating on taking photos!

Kacky
06-17-2008, 01:25 PM
What I usually do is bring a camera and save it until after (or before, because some venues are ghey) the gig if I end up meeting the band or whoever is performing. Sucks especially if your camera dies in the middle of the show, besides, other people will be taking photos anyway, so it's not like you're not going to see pictures from it.

Links ahoy!

Looks like Take40 have a behind the scenes of White Noise video up, which is only 2:45 long but pretty interesting, covers the making of the song. You'll have to click the link on that page to watch the video (in a popup player).
http://www.take40.com/artists/1339/Living-End,-The

Next, I found this article on New World Artists' page - The Living End's bio, which has some info. about White Noise we may not have known about.

http://www.newworldartists.net/artists/index.cfm?artistid=8 (http://www.newworldartists.net/artists/index.cfm?artistid=8)

Here's the interesting stuff that relates to White Noise, for those who can't be stuffed clicking. I've bolded song titles. Hey Hey Disbeliever may not be dead after all!

To help them realise their vision for ‘White Noise’, The Living End sought a producer whom they felt could, in Cheney’s words, “capture the energy and attack we are after”. Enter John Agnello, who had previously pulled sounds for a host of impressive names, including Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr. and The Hold Steady. In April, at the behest of Agnello, The Living End converged upon Water Music Studios in Hoboken, New Jersey for four very intense weeks pre-production and recording. Tracking together live in the studio and recording straight-to-tape, the band and Agnello cut out all visible flab, keeping nothing but meat, bone and the raw essence of an amazing three-piece in full-flight.

Slamming the whole thing out in an astounding three weeks (with one week of pre-production at the start), White Noise was then mixed in eight days at Silent Studios in Atlanta, Georgia by Brendan O’Brien, the studio wizard also currently working on new records by AC/DC and Pearl Jam. Boasting eleven standout tracks, it kicks off fittingly with the blowtorch guitar-work and hard-arse funk groove of “How Do We Know”, slamming quickly into the explosive “Raise The Alarm”. Next up, first single and title track “White Noise” offers a spirited take on the band’s trademark sound, and (along with “Hey, Hey, Disbeliever”) helps build a bridge between the old sound and new. With solid rhythms and steady tempos, White Noise’s rockin’ central pillars, “Make The Call” and “Loaded Gun”, each showcase different aspects of the remodeled The Living End sound, while “Kid”, believe it or not sounds like a post Hamburg era Beatles in full flight. “21st Century” drags it at all to a breathtaking peak. Closing out the record, the laidback dub-reggae vibe of “Sum of Us” shows the diversity the band are capable of, while still remaining comfortable within their own skins.

I know the article only mentions 9 songs, but I think it's safe to assume that those 9 are on the album, with another 2 songs we're not sure of.

If I had to guess, I'd say the album consisted of:

How Do We Know
Raise The Alarm
White Noise
Hey, Hey, Disbeliever
Moment In The Sun
Make The Call
Loaded Gun
Kid
21st Century
Waiting For The Silence
Sum Of Us

I wonder what'll happen to Suzy, November, and the rest - I only heard new songs they played at the festival shows (wasn't 18 at the time of the Longnecks tour). B-sides, I pray? I doubt they'll all end up as B-sides, there's about 8 leftover tracks we know exist...

understandable though don't you think- I think Chris wants to be remembered for more than his solos- I get the feeling that with this album what they want is for when our generation gets asked which TLE album they should go out and buy- that it should be white noise. Chris wants to be remembered for being an outstanding songwriter and not just a guitarist.

you wouldn't need to learn anything- if my father and mother can handle them then anyone can. The only reason people think they're counter intuitive is because they're so used to PCs. If you used common sense then you wouldn't find it odd at all.

They're so much more simple than PCs- I've had mine for.... 4 years now and it hasn't gone wrong once- neither has it shown me any meaningless error warnings, had a virus, shut down on me for no reason, needed re-formatting, needed de-fragging, or generally wasted any or my time or money at all. Best computer I've ever had: hands down. You couldn't pay me to go back to PCs.

slightly back on topic- are we expecting all the songs that won't make the album to end up as B-sides on the singles that they release?
also when are we expecting a white noise music video?

Jonnno
06-18-2008, 10:29 PM

dude macs and pc are so simliar now its not even funny.
macs used to be all about audio visual and couldnt do the word processing etc
but now they can
and i mean fuck.. macs run on intel based hardware now so they're getting more and more similiar
who fuckin cares lol
imo macs are better for audio visual as always. pc's are better for everything else that i couldnt be bothered to learn about on a mac =]
end of the day i'de have a PC desktop and a mac laptop or they other way around.
one for my digital recording etc etc
and one for msn and all that normal stuff we do on pc's

anyways back on topic. i think loaded gun could be very controversial but yeah i dont think TLE would be worried about it.
as for black and white i dont think so. i think maybe something different to what they've ever done.
thats what they're going for on this album isnt it?

Habibster
06-18-2008, 11:49 PM
I think Loaded Gun would make for a solid video clip, even if it pretty much just tells the story of the lyrics.

And about the controversy part, i guess that negative publicity can be good in a way, ala more people know about the song, which in turn transfers into the possibility of more album/single sales, etc.

thelivingvines
06-19-2008, 12:12 AM
imo macs are better for audio visual as always. pc's are better for everything else that i couldnt be bothered to learn about on a mac =]

what everything else? word is identical so there's no difference there. As for internet or msn and they're both identical as well- torrents etc run exactly the same. The only other stuff you do is play with viruses, close pop-ups, and ignore pointless and unhelpful warnings. They have a shorter lifespan and hoard useless information that wastes your memory. I spilled soup- proper sticky tomato soup- all over my mac and not a thing has gone wrong with it since I cleaned it up. Built. To. Last.
If you're a gamer then a PS3 or an xbox is way better.
Logic Pro is THE piece of recording software to have if you use your computer for recording- not that we advocate illegal downloading here but there are so many torrents of it that you wouldn't have to buy it. I just don't see any advantages to PCs at all.

we are on topic! mac's are white (mostly) and there's a lot of noise about them.;)

We've got so many clips of them playing (TM, PITM, LLTW) I think that's been done... they need to do something new. I have to say I was never crazy about the nothing lasts forever clip either.... rock and a hard place.

Yes!

thelivingvines

why do that when that's not what the song is about? you can't just make up another meaning for a song to suit a music video.

White Noise could very easily follow on from NLF, if you go by what Chris said about White Noise in the take 40 videos :)

thelivingvines
06-19-2008, 08:10 PM
the song is about an argument is it not?.... well, hasn't that already happened in NLF? I thought it was pretty clear in that video that she left. why make the same video again, and why the hell would that character go back?

and try this idea on for size- so far a lot of the publicity about white noise has been about TLE reinventing themselves- why attatch themselves to the last album in that way?

and besides the continuation thing has been done by Green Day- and I think we've had enough of those comparisons, don't you? imagine what that would do for people in the US and UK getting into the band- "they're just copying greenday"- I can hear it already.

I imagine this is one of those things I would've heard about by now, but any word on the b-sides for the White Noise single? With so many beloved (though I've heard all of about 2 of them) songs from The Longnecks gigs being left off the album, can we hope for some of them for some smokin' b-sides? Possibilities that come to mind: November, Suzy, Rats...I'm sure someone will post ones that I forgot.

I'm hoping for a situation like this...TLE used to be one of those bands whos b-sides were just as good if not BETTER than the tracks that made the album (Homestead, Witch Doctor, There Is No Radio, etc.). I felt like most of the b-sides that came out with last album's singles were copouts...alternate live versions of album tracks, even tracks that were already on the album! (Reborn, anybody?). We know they've got tons of extra stuff lyin' around...RELEASE IT!!! Maybe we need to start a petition...

r2jeeves
06-22-2008, 05:23 PM
I couldn't imagine a scenario where they have a good deal of b-sides, and then not release them. I think the problem with SOE was they didn't have that many b-sides, other than like...Don't Turn Away. I haven't heard any of the songs other then the ones on the radio, but by what you guys have been saying they sound pretty awesome.

Shadow
06-22-2008, 07:20 PM
Well, in terms of what we know of as that could potentially be coming our way - there's 8 songs:

Rats (confirmed)
Faith
She's Calling Out
Live to Love
Suzy (retitled "Listen Up Suzy" - will be on the White Noise Single)
New Frontier
November
Beware the Moon

Those are the songs we know about - there's always the possibility that they demoed more songs that they didn't play on the Longnecks tour (eg. Down To The Wire) - kinda like how Apeface was a brand spankin' new track on the LLTW single.

If they have three singles there's a good chance we'll see a majority of these songs turn up. The first single that precedes the album (in this case White Noise) usually has a track from the album on it, (ala WOYR featuring Reborn) to give a taste of the album to come. Presumably, White Noise will do the same (might even have HDWK), and have one "new" b-side.

Singles 2 and 3 are the best contenders to have a "motherload" of b-side goodies, think Wake Up and LLTW - I think that the second and third singles are likely to have 2 b-sides on each (unless they really want us to hear all the songs and they put the single track and 3 extra b-sides like LLTW did)

If they do a fourth single (I hope they do, they've got plenty of killer tracks to choose from from WN), it's possible that they'll put a new b-side and then fill the remainder with a live track - 'cause by the time the 4th single comes out, they'll have been on tour for a fair while, no doubt. Maybe Jailbreak as a live track?

If we have four singles, I'd hope we would get to hear the 8 tracks they played on the Longnecks tour, unless they have other unknown material they're going to put on singles, or they could be planning to save a song for the next album? (Faith?)

I think it'd be cool if they did the last single as an EP with 5 tracks (single song, 3 b-sides, and a live song).

So if anyone's still reading, my theory is:

Single #1:
- White Noise
White Noise, "album track", "new" song.

Single #2:
- Raise The Alarm
Raise The Alarm, two "new" songs.

Single #3:
- Loaded Gun
Loaded Gun, two "new" songs, live track.

If anyone read this rant in it's entirety, congratulations.

I kinda figured HDWK would be on the White Noise single - it's been radio played to buggery prior to the album so it makes sense.
I liked Suzy though, if I'm thinking of the right song!

They should mash Wake Up with Listen Up Suzy and maybe they'd get Wake Up Little Suzie out of it?! :p

No need to predict it - Rae said it herself that it would be on one of the upcoming singles.

She didn't say it would be on White Noise, but a confirmed it to be on one of the album's singles. Probably the next one.

The White Noise single tracklisting sounds awesome. I finally get to hear Listen Up Suzy after they had to cut the song out at the St. Kilda Fest. I shall buy it after school when it comes out (why'd school holidays have to finish the week before? lame...).

The singles the 7th and the albums the 19th...I believe. There goes about $30 of my money on CD's.

Stupid question - what is a digipack?

Aaron
06-23-2008, 09:18 AM
Wiki it: Digipak (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digipak)

This is a Muse digipak. Basically the thing to note is that they themselves fold, i.e. aren't inserts in a plastic jewel case

not sure if its been posted, but from the jb hi fi online store...

White Noise (Collector's Ed) (CD & DVD)
The Living End
The collector’s edition will have bonus DVD of the ‘AC/DC Lane’ live recording and will come as a digipack.

Recorded in less than 5 weeks during April and May at Water Music Studios in Hoboken, New Jersey with producer John Agnello (Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr, The Hold Steady), The Living End then decamped to Atlanta, Georgia to mix the tracks with the legendary Brendan O'Brien (RATM, Soundgarden). O'Brien is a man in high demand with commitments to record the new AC/DC and Pearl Jam records either side of his work with The Living End. Setting a blistering pace, O'Brien mixed two tracks a day, completing the album in only 8 days.
Track listing
Disc 1:
1. How Do We Know
2. Raise The Alarm
3. White Noise
4. Moment In The Sun
5. Waiting For The Silence
6. Make The Call
7. Loaded Gun
8. Kid
9. 21st Century
10. Hey Hey Disbeliever
11. Sum Of Us
Disc 2:
1. DVD - Live at AC/DC Lane

Bummed about How Do We Know being on the single...I know it's not been "officially" released yet, but I feel like wasting a track space on a single with something that was already released free to everybody as a download is the same "copout" I mentioned earlier...like putting a live version of an already released track or even using the studio version of something that will eventually be on the album (reborn). Why do that when there's plenty of stuff that has remained unheard?

Also, I wonder if there's specific reasons when/why bands choose to release a single EP (4, 5, or more tracks) instead of just a regular single (1-3 tracks). Something like the Roll On EP, to me, is just important as a piece of The Living End's catalogue to hear and own as any of their albums....it's not just a single and some leftovers, it's got its own cohesive nature and an important diversity. It explores a sound that the band were fiddling with for the first time, which never quite made it onto the Roll On album but was dabbled with on later albums...slower, more soulful, (often) acoustic, folky, confessional music...especially considering that this is a time when everyone was still slapping them with the "punkabilly" label (not that people have stopped entirely). Homestead and The Man With No Name are what "Talk Tonight" was for Oasis...proof that the band is capable of penning songs in completely different styles, stripping away the noise and speed and leaving just the beating heart of a great rock and roll band.

When I got that Roll On single/EP in the mail and popped it into my cd player, I was hearing new songs that I still hold dear to my heart as some of my favorite TLE songs ever, an important part of the album that could've just ended up on the cutting room floor, unheard...now isn't that overall a better experience than popping in a new single and thinking "wow, that was a kinda neat live version of that old song" or "hey, now I have How Do We Know on an official single instead of that CD I burned like a month ago from the free download'?

I'm sure this bitchy rant will soon be lost amongst posts about sexy boobies or something, but all that said, I am excited about this Suzy business!

for the most part I agree. I see the b-side spots as an opportunity to experience new TLE, and like you mentioned about Reborn and other versions of previously released songs, I feel with SOE a lot of opportunity for new and different TLE was missed with their choices in songs.

But, from a marketing point of view I think the songs on WN are a pretty good move. Not only do you get White Noise, but you get that other song thats been played on the radio too. I think it will help produce more hype for the album, then hopefully more album sales and *fingers crossed* another #1 album.

And if they chuck HDWK on the first single, we don't have to fear it taking up precious room on future singles :)

I guess putting it out first does get it out of the way...and I understand why they'd want to do it, promotionally. Le sigh...come to think of it, this is pretty much what they did with Modern Artillery (What Would You Do? released first, then One Said, then both of them making it onto the single...at least it was a different version of WWYD, though).
