ok my take on the album.. mixing and recording is GREAT! stand out songs are moment in the sun, waiting for the silence and loaded gun. others are still awesome except for sum of us, which is kinda lacking. but its ok i guess. kinda depressing to think that its gunna be another 2ish years till we hear more new songs now ahh well. enjoy listening people.

I detoured on the way home (about 20km extra :p) to listen to it.
Then watched the DVD.
Got two copies, one for me and one for my brother - was the first one in the store and they were still putting them on the shelves.

Why is nobody sulking over Waiting For The Silence? Man, that song is great.

I fuckin love the chorus part that goes:
When all of the boys were making their noise
And the girls were trying hard to pretend
The way that is sung is insanely awesome

If anyone's playing at home, I figured out the catch with the differently-priced iTunes albums: the $10.99 version can only be bought as a whole album, whereas the $16.99 version lets you purchase each song separately (for $1.69). Very cutely, you look down the list of popularity rankings for songs on that album, and naturally She's Calling Out has a maxed out ranking.:p

I would agree it's heavy, in any case.
I had the CD up pretty loud in my car, and it came on and I nearly drove off the road. Bit of a loud one after Waiting For the Silence.

how do we know - that riff wow. too bad i listened to it 300 times before the album
raise the alarm - way better slower. i love this song.
white noise - that chorus is something else, they could've been a bit more creative on
the ending. none the less i love this song too.
moment in the sun - thought it was just okay live, but i think it's growing on me a bit.
waiting for the silence - im speechless, it blew me away in sydney, but on here its on a whole new level. made me cry a little, only cause my girlfriend left me for 4 months so im a little choked up to begin with. the chorus is unreal, and the strings really fit i think. i also can't believe people aren't going nuts over this one. i think it's already one of my all time favorites.
make the call - guitar hero. i thought it sucked in sydney. but this song is awesome. can only be listened to loudly though, sorry roommates.
loaded gun - so powerful on tape.
kid - good non stop pop. im a bit of a sucker for these ones. not sure about the bells at the beginning.
21st - musically this song is pretty good. but guys come on, those lyrics are pretty bad. time me they sound a little contrived. but thank you for the guitar solo chris. i think this song is the only one that ruins a fully perfect album.
disbeliever - awesome. so good. probably my early favorite of the record. just so good. and kind of cool and there's something fresh about it.
sum of us - i don't know what you're complaining about, its awesome. sure it's different but any fan of the clash or the police or even zeppelin should appreciate this bad boy. i think it's a nice change and a cool way to end the record.
of the bsides, beware the moon is the best i think. live to love is pretty powerful, but i think it's missing something, just like she's calling out which is why they didn't make the cut. but obviously worth a listen.
all in all i think its one of the best rock albums to come out in years. but i want more guitar solos. i know that the guitar work is full of subtleties which are great, but i think chris held back a bit.

I won't argue that lyrically it's great, it is weaker than the rest. I reckon it's a cool change of pace though and really like it on the album. Also I agree with your view on Waiting for the Silence, probably my favourite. Love it

Waiting for the Silence is unbelievable. I actually like those bells in the beginning of kid. I also think 21st is a good song, maybe not a favorite, but definitely have the potential to grow on me. Sum of Us is awesome, too. I think the reggae is a nice change. They did it nicely.

I think I lucked out today, went to the signing and bought White Noise, on the way home I wanted to listen to the CD, took it out of the case, it came out a little too easily only for me to discover an identical CD underneath! So I got two White Noise CDs with the one from JB still on the way, which I'm gonna sell to my friend
But yeah, an excellent album, raise the alarm, waiting for the silence and make the call sound fantastic recorded

I have tons to say about this album, but considering I'm only on maaybe listen #...3? Of the high-quality (read: not shitty streaming) version of the album, I shall withold.
I will say though that while production style is something i think is important to all music, particularly with TLE it seems it can make or break their records...even one filled with a lot of good tunes (see Modern Artillery and the shit-stained hands of producer Mark Trombino...god I love to slag him). This one has got it spot on!
Also, I think this record is one of the first to display strongly the influences of musicians the bands have often talked about being into but rarely seemed to emulate, such as The Cure (waiting for the silence) or The Jam (moment in the sun), etc.
One less obvious influence I think a lot of people might overlook, particularly on the "heavy, hard-hitting" tracks that seemed to be most advertised leading up to the album's release, is Queens of the Stone Age.
This is a group that all 3 members of the band have raved about, even to the point of saying things about how watching them makes them realize how far they still need to go in perfecting their live show and attack, and wondering...could they ever be that good? (Chris, at 2003 BD0 doing an interview with that deustchbag Trevor something guy that seems to always be interviewing them...I'm not Australian, somebody help me out with his name...A triple J guy??) ANYWAY, listening to those groove-heavy, repetitive and robotic (in a good way), big boneheaded rock riifs that power songs like How Do We Know and Make The Call among others, I can't help but hear the signature of Josh Homme's groovy Robot-Rock all over it.

amazing, im not going to write a review because as all good albums, this is going to take repeated listens (especially on vinyl) for me to even think about how it compares with the rest of their catalogue.
but let me just say this, i like kid, what can i say, i think it suits them well and fits in nice and snug with the rest of the songs, very glad they included it

You can register for an iTunes Store account without a credit card. You need to buy the card, then click "redeem" in the itunes store on the right hand side under quick links. It'll ask you to enter the code from the card. I can't remember exactly what happens after, but it's something like it will ask you to either sign in or create an account, and when you create an account, you don't need to put in credit card information, unlike when you try to create an account normally. I've bought quite a few tracks off the itunes store, and I don't have a credit card.

Don't expect like an hour marathon like the previous making of/doco DVD's, this is more just a quick overview of it. Lasts 10minutes-ish if I'm not mistaken. If you keep up with the forums alot they won't tell you much new. But its very pretty looking! Especially the home menu!

I agree. It would have been a bit out of place on the album, but they potentially could have saved it A la Maitland Street & Into The Red. Although when they start doing that they get a bit stuck due to the fact Chris usually writes 40 songs for an album....

My review of the album coz i'm bored and waiting for my clothes to dry.
How Do We Know - Sounds much like it was live..Definantly one of those heavier songs that's been spoken about...Opening riff itself is enough to go "WOAH"
Raise The Alarm- I love this song lyrically a fuckload it stuck out to me from the first time they played it...Because every bit of it is true. "I may not believe in god, doesn't mean i'm a lesser person"
White Noise- Has been one of those songs that's grown on me...The chord progression was just weird when I first heard it, once again, lyrically, Chris has made this song one of the best he's written.
I love the drums in it and the bass..Well Scott slaps so i'm a happy child.
Moment In The Sun- I'ld say one of the poppier songs on the album, I like it though, reminds me of a few songs from previous albums (a bit Modern Artillery-ish maybe?)
Waiting For The Silence- Long (5 minutes!) The vocal stick out to me, lyrically (AGAIN) has made the song, definantly not one of their heavier songs instrumentally but maybe lyrically.
Make The Call- Fuck I love this song..The riff is awesome, obvious a heavier song, it's fast, the vocals just sound raw but in a damn good way.
Loaded Gun- The intro bit is weird but it's kinda good, I've always loved this song, he riff digs in like How do We Know...Intro is just unreal
Kid - It's alright. It's not a fav but if ya listen to the lyrics it makes ya think so in that way it's an alright song.
21st century- Chorus is the part that makes me go "wicked" but overall it's a pretty darn good song. Would love to see it live again
Hey Hey Disbeliever- of all the songs from TLN tour that was recorded, this has song I think has had the most bits and pieces added to it, but it's fucking cool.
Sum Of Us- and easy B-side more so then being ont he actual album, but it's alright, not REALLY bad but doesn't stick out
Overall i'm really impressed,
Out of all the albums, this album has the heaviest lyrics to the songs.
When sung it just sounds so raw and live!
I'm glad they did recording this way nothing has changed to dramatically with each songs and they still sound fuckin awesome as they did on TLN tour.
A+
Can't wait to go to another TLE show and hear more new songs!

How Do We Know: Never really warmed to this song. There's nothing inherently bad about it, but to be honest it just sounds like alot of other bands at the moment doing the whole hard edged rock'n'roll thing. Vocally don't find it very interesting either.
Raise The Alarm: Probably the most typical living end sounding track on the cd, and it rocks. Some of the lyrics are a bit lame (which i found on a few tracks on this record), but I tihnk this song will become a staple in the live set. When listening to this song i was hoping for just maybe one more good vocal hook to make it a great song, but nevermind.
White Noise: Mediocre tune in my opinion. The chorus melody is catchy in itself, but just seems to get repitive very quickly (even though that is the general idea of chorus). Good ending to this song. It's a shame I can't say that I really like this song becuase this song along with a few others such as Kid, Moment in The Sun really have that english pop vibe going on (bands like The Jam etc..) which is great but unfortunately for me this song I find is just okay
Moment in The Sun: Best song on the album. Song just has a great drive to it, great chorus. Reminds me of Bruce Springsteen. The piano in the song is a nice addition also. More songs like this with this sort of energy and catchiness on the album would've been great.
Waiting For The Silence: Another mediocre song in my opinion. Intro had my attention, then it just seems to lose all energy in the verses. Nothing vocally outstanding. Just one of those songs where nothing sounds bad, it just doesn' really sound that good either.
Make the Call: Don't really like the main riff, or the verses. Chorus is great but the song sounds too disjointed in my opinion.
Loaded Gun: Intro riff is cool, but the whole "with loaded gun" line sounds weird to me. It's songs like these it just seems like they are trying too hard and it really comes off sounding forced.
Kid: Good track. Simple melody, vocally brilliant. Nice sounding solo that reiterates the melody. More songs like this please!.
21st Century: Arghh once again..I love the chorus to this..sounds aggressive, jumpy..but the verses are just downright awful..the lyrics seriously sound like a joke and the melody just has nothing there. Really does sound like a song about nothing.
Hey Hey Disbeliever: Once Again! Good sounding chorus but verses that come off sounding wacky.
Sum of Us: I dont mind' this tune, not a great song. Once again no real presence of any vocal hooks.

It's an alright song and all, but its the poppiest song on the album. The boys would want a powerful song as the next single, not another poppy tinged song.
Loaded Gun, Raise The Alarm and Moment in the Sun are the main contenders for the single spots, with Make the Call, Disbeliever and possibly WFTS being outside chances.

I hate to say it, but I call BS on Moving Mountains without a shred of evidence to prove it. Yet, they have a length for the track, which is bizarre. I really just don't think so, without any proof. And Kid as the next single would be surprising, but again, I doubt it'll happen. Just a lil' bit of evidence is all I need.
Moving Mountains is Usher's latest single too, so I'm more inclined to believe this is a windup by a renegade Usher fan.

If and when TLE get heared on the radio here in North America will they be using the same singles as they did in Australia? I really think that "Hey Hey Disbeliever" or "Loaded Gun" would work better than HDWK or White Noise, especially since most Americans are not familiar with TLE, they need catchy songs like Hey Hey...or LG. But I guess I'm getting a little ahead of myself here.

I heard New Frontier at St. Kilda Fest on the Longnecks Tour... it's a "gallopy" song, has a riff which I seem to remember is a little similar to Lone Ranger in how its played. There was a live vid of it on youtube from a Longnecks show, not sure if it's still around. Good tune.
"I'm goinnnnnnnn.... to climb the atmosphere..... I'm goinnnnnnnn... to find a new frontier..."

I can almost safely say... White Noise could've easily been a GREAT double album. I can understand how a double album can seem like a lot of filler, but I think that a 20 track album, 10 tracks on one, 10 on the other - would've been just great. But hell, as a single album it is solid, and we get the leftover songs as bonuses and stuff so, who cares? :p

But yeh, I remain unconvinced and worried that it could be a bad move making that single.

OK PEOPLE, DO NOT TAKE THIS THE WRONG WAY, IT IS AN EXAMPLE USED TO SHOW THE EXTREMITY'S OF HOW RETARTED THE MUSIC INDUSTRY CAN BE!...ok
The "whatever song" and crazy frog are also marketable lol. so it doesnt always mean they should focus on the most marketable songs, but i can see where you are coming from.
I really wish I could trust the Australian public and music industry to fall in love with Waiting For The Silence like I have, because that song is brilliant. And songs like Make the Call and Loaded Gun are possible singles too.
I am open to MITS becoming a single, just not the next one, they have released White Noise, which has a poppy vibe. Now give it some rock, some Loaded Gun, catchy, politically active and very fun to sing along to in a meaningful way.

"Sorry but you SON is deaaaad"
Yeah!
Yer i wasnt taking it the wrong way buddy just saying. i love waiting for the silence too its amazing. i agree with you on the rock thing loaded gun defintly, or maybe hey hey disbeiever i love that one but i doubt it.
Good Points mate :)

Got my copy fully signed today! :D
And...I mean...faarrkk. No words to describe it! Bloody masterpiece. Every single song...my hat goes off to the boys for this. Actually they can keep the hat, a-and my tie! Take it all! They deserve it all for such a great album.
Absolutely nothing like hearing the songs coming through the speakers in my lounge. All too much fun! :D
I've only listened through once so far. I cant choose a favourite song. I do believe this is their best album yet! it shits all over SOE.

Best album yet, imo.
Every song has such...substance to it. Both lyrically and musically speaking. There's just so much variation running though each song. First time I heard most of the songs too, but they're all instant favourites.
Just going through each track, I wondered if it was possible for things to get any better, but they did. Time and time again.
Make the Call made an instant impression from the very start. Hard hitting stuff there.
I almost cried when I heard Kid :D So much emotion in that song...so well done.
21st Century near scared me because it had an odd familiarity to a song we did in a school play back when I was in about year 6, called 2563 lol, odd but true. (homage to Billy Joel's 'We Didn't Start the Fire?', couldn't help the comparison) Anyway, its a great song in it own right.
God, I could go on and on, but I'm just so damn excited! :D

It's played with the main beat of the drums...

I guess that prolly adds to it. And the 'they never ever get any better' does too.
But there's other stuff that gets me.
It's the second TLE song that's done it to me.
Bringing it all back home hit me. Very different reasons tho...

So after the album has been able to digest a bit, anyone think that maybe kid and 21st should've maybe stayed on the shelf? i find myself skipping these two just about every listen. 21st seems cheesy and modern artillery, while kid to me is just a little redundant. or something.
i think a little more work on live to love and suzy could've made the album that much stronger.

21st Century is great! Never skip it :P
I do, however, occasionally skip Kid. Weakest song on the album for me, IMO.

Kid is one of the best on the album IMO.
It's my 4th favourite.
Make the Call is definitely my no. 1...
How Do We Know - makes me think of English Army. In my strange round about way of thinking... and I love it!
Raise the Alarm - makes me sing, when I should be resting my voice... :(
White Noise - is just awesome...
Moment in the Sun - Is a great song...
their all just great songs... I can't analyse this stuff anymore...
Its just well written, and I really enjoy it!

I thought you would have bought a few copies just to chuck in the box, just as an end to it all at least...
*shrugs*
Oh I prolly will.
Dont know about 'an end to it all'.
Just alot of other stuff goin on at the mo, and, yeah not even TLE is cutting thru that crap.
I still think you'd quite like it Maybs... I think you might be surprised...
You saw my reaction at Geelong... And no I wasn't talking about the one where I melted into the floor when he walked on stage... lol
I love it now I've heard the album, now its been tweaked, and poked, and molded into this amazing body of work...
They really have done a great job on this album... I think you need to give it a chance, I think it might surprise you...
Gotta be in the right head space for it.
And if Thurs is anything to go by...
Yeah, might be a while yet.
When you're ready then, I hope you get to though.
*hugs*
Its a strange world when I'm more excited than you woman... :p
It's been strange at this end too.
Normally I cant understand why people arent hyped enough.
This time I'm not relating to why they are.
Very bizarre times.
Doubly strange was seeing you all mental on Thurs, and not even remotely being there with you. Spin out.
I know... I feel like a dick... I always feel like a dick... But you know...
I feel this album... it just feels right...
I feel as if they've come in this full circle, and they've hit the right note, and the right riff, and really pulled me back in this time...
It feels like them, not like something someone is telling them to be... Not sure I should be saying that... :o
