When I first listened to it I didn't like it. I think I'm always secretly hoping for a full on Punkabilly kick in the chops of an album and when it's not I'm gutted. Then I took the album with me in the car and listened to it for an hour and a half to, then another hour and a half back from Salisbury Races and I now love it because I listened to it for what it is, The Living End 2008 and not 1998. Chris' lyrics get me, especailly 'Moment in the Sun'. The sound took some getting used to but now it's going to be on heavy rotation and no doubt the sounds that will always remind me of summer 2008 - yes it's sunny in Pommyland!

i am ACTUALLY gonna end up in a loony bin this time.
No album has ever so firmly stuck in my head for this long, without any breaks. My heads a mess of riffs and lyrics and i can't do aaaaanything about it except to keep the album on heavy rotation. I am SO impressed, its amazing. Not a single song disagrees with me even in the slightest. Every song is a rock solid gold mine and the lyrics back that up.
Moment in the Sun was admitedly, not my favourite track during the longnecks tour. I can't get enough of it now!! The piano's a nice touch, its got that Cold Chisel-esque magic to it.
Make the Call is such a kick in the guts... soooo good!!!
I played Raise the Alarm to my russian orthodox mother.... that was an interesting scene :p

To be honest, I always thought there were a few dudes on each TLE album, but each track on this release is solid. It might because its 11 tracks instead of 14. Cut the fat. Smart move.

I'm in love with this record, although a lot of people knew that already.
Kid is one of my favourites now, it's just so fun and makes me want to dance around, or something.
Hey Hey Disbeliever is funtastic too.

Very true.
While i still like the 'duds', you can tell there were some lesser quality songs on each record.
But this one is all good, i first thought sm of us was a dud, but i dont mind it now

Besides the fact I skip HDWK on each listen these days, I feel exactly the same way, they're all so good!
I still remember Elyse at Sydney going on about how awesome this album was gonna be. Sorry Elyse, at the time I didn't believe you, but you were so right!
The other thing I love about this album, is how much the boys love this album too. I know they said the same thing for SOE, but I just didn't believe them! They'd be in interviews going 'yeah, this album is really good', whereas now for WN, they're in interviews going, 'we love this album, we love this song, we want to play it all right now'. :)

The thing about HHD is that it has that fat groovy riff - I like the song a lot, but I don't think it would work as a single. But I love playing along to it on drums, and yesterday I played the whole album start to finish on drums - Sum Of Us is pretty fun to play, I discovered :D.

I'd love to - I'm killer at Raise The Alarm, HHD, Make The Call, White Noise, and Loaded Gun - but I have no way of recording them :(. Sum of Us is pretty relaxed, I haven't mastered all of the fills or anything, but it's a fun song to groove out to and improvise on. Shame it fades out.

I occasionally skip HDWK but that's probably cos we got the free download and heard it so much that it's bored its way into my head and i don't need to put the cd in to listen to it.

I have been playing the album from Moment In The Sun onwards.

I reckon Listen Up Suzy and Live to Love are EASILY album material, shame they didn't get on aswell 'coz then it'd be a longer listen but no matter, atleast we have them!!
listened to it about 8 times now, and cannot decide which songs are my favourites.
Probably - Hey Hey Disbeliever, then Make the Call, Waiting for the Silence, Loaded Gun, Sum of Us...woah,seems I have to list all the songs.they're really great, all of them!
I did like every b-side, too. But except for Hopeless, don't know why. It still sounds like a stranger to me.
Good work on the whole album, it's definetely improved comparing with SOE.They finally got these heavy tunes and it doesn't even sound like a "some other band", which is fantastic in some aspects =)

oh yes, Live to Love could be a good ending for an album, right after Sum of Us. Suzy is a bit oout of conception but it's awesome anyway. Though I'd prefer some b-sides to be on album, just to get a complete impression...without separating "main material" and "exterior material".

Nah, give it some more time I think before we start another poll... which will undoubtedly result in White Noise being on top. The last poll I think had SOE on top followed by either S/T or Roll On, can't remember.

i find it impossible to choose, purely on the basis that i got the eps and the first 3 albums all at roughly the same time, meaning i've loved them for equally the same amount of time... whereas the newcomers as much as they're phenomenal, can't possibly take over... not yet anyway. hmm...
I find it weird, SOE has some of my most favourite living end songs on it (Radio, Til the End, NLF) but it would be my least played living end album. I dunno, there's just something about it that makes me go 'skip, skip, skip'. Even after the first few times i listened to it, i found myself skipping a fair few of the songs.
With White Noise however, i haven't skipped many songs yet, and it's been on almost non-stop since i got it about 10 days ago. At the moment it is my favourite Living End album, probably like a fair few people. Having said that though, it is easy to get caught up in the hype and jump on the badwagon.
Even my father, who doesnt like The Living End, but respects them as musicians (He reckons Cheney is one of the best Aussie guitarists going around), has been listening to White Noise fairly constantly, so thats gotta a positive then :p
I think that White Noise has some tracks that could last a fair while, but still have a kind of modern-ish/up to date edge in years to come.
haha some of that probably doesn't make much sense. :p

The last 2 albums had both one song i always skip and i dont really like(So What and Nothing Lasts forever.. in my opinion the worst tle tracks). apart from that i love SOE and Modern Art has some great tunes also but i dont like its clean production.
but White Noise has not a single weak track on it :)
wouldnt compare them to roll on and s/t though, because they are too different

I guess I'm old school in that I got them all the first day they came out and my first love was self titled, many fond memories. I think sometimes you judge an album by how good the times were when you listened to it. self titled was played at like every party and dance I ever went to etc... Musically it's not their best though. I think White Noise is a far more consolidated effort than SOE, cut the crap, 11 songs all good. I though t SOE was a bit too simple and stripped back (I know they wanted it like that but they seemed to hold back some talent) I also think Mod Art is under rated (weak middle/late middle though) and Roll on had some of their best but worst... In time I think I'd rate white noise around 3rd of 5, although it grows by the day.
AlinaPOW
07-29-2008, 10:16 PM
It sure didn't.
oh good
I cannot see myself getting sick of White Noise and that's my main basis for judging it as awesome. Where as SOE... i can only listen to it once at a time, and even though i love all the songs, for some reason it doesn't get pulled out all too often...
The Dying Start

I agree in that I think for me WN is the first album since self titled that I will probably keep pulling out over the years and feel good about playing the whole album through. The others I find myself skipping songs here and there. I also think this album has the best batch of B sides as a whole too...

So my order for favourite TLE album goes like this now:
1. White Noise

Me too, Self-titled is MY bag, punk-rockabilly with prominent double-bass I'm just hoping that one day TLE will give that genre another go and the result will be the best ever in that sphere. But having said that I love Chris's song writing and really appreciate almost everything they do. This album has grown on me very quickly and I now really like it, BUT self-titled will always be one of my favourite albums of all time.
The other thing I love about TLE, whatever avenues they are exploring at the time, you know that they are still rockers through and through and that will always shine in a live show, as displayed in the free DVD when they interrupt the new material to kick effortlessly into Second Solution.
No band that lasts at the top the time TLE have without varying their content and I love 'em all the more for it

LOL trust me when i say i really like the ST album. It's just that all of their albums are seriously good, so it can be hard to rate them on an 'officially final' sort of basis thing, but i'm a stubborn person so i'm not gonna let that happen. I'd have to say my least fav album for b-sides would be SOE. All the others would be equal 1st.
And I always have trouble ranking albums. But I suppose if I was to rank them from the whole album I'd listen to right now, it'd go:
White Noise (a bit biased this one right now!)
Roll On
MA
TLE
SOE.
awww, now I feel bad for SOE :p
White Noise (a bit biased this one right now!)
Roll On
MA
TLE
SOE.
awww, now I feel bad for SOE :p
looks pretty much like my list! and "poor SOE" thing is also one of my thoughts when I try to rank albums. :o
I prefer listen to TLE albums rarely, cause once I've been told something like: "Yana, you always listen to anything you like TOO often, squeezes all the juice out of it, and then there's nothing interesting left there for you, so you just start to ignore that band/album/song."
And that is true, so now I have doubts every time I choose what album to pick - "Do I listen to this one too much or it's ok to play it one more time?".
Yep sounds a bit weird, but maybe someone does the same? And since TLE is my favourite band ever, I listen to them only when I have strong assurance that it's the right time and I have mood for their music.
Eh

We can't be silent anymore. It's a shame we got White Noise from i-net, but think we can talk about it because friend helped us to purchase a real CD, and we wait now when it arrives by post.
Our impressions are very strong. Grate, mature and interesting album. Better then SOE, and after news about Chris want to leave but overcome this, but felt different strong feelings and shange like a person - this all felt inside songs. The biggest surprise for us was lyrics, especially this fact that we dig in it from the first listening (Olya was listened it in subway, but really understood 70% of meanings). It was very hard before. TLE lyrics for us was always turbid, like young people usually says here :o Also after How Do We Know wa were prepared for changes and new sound and other things, but was wandered how much "old itself" guys keep in this album. So wa can say we dig in album from the first listening and understood that it's wonderfull, amazing, mega cool and it's for long for us.
About songs. Guess we already listened album nearly 40-50 times and from beginning to now some songs became more interesting. But we go in order:
How Do We Know It's ok, but we think QOTSA helped us don't wandering abut such guitar riffs and sound. This song was before album so we, like many others, listened it 300 times, so now, sorry guys we skip it.
Raise The Alarm !!!!!!!! Super! We loved it! It was so nice and sweet when we recognized "who-a who-a!". Luke called to us from mobile phone from some gig and we heard it, and liked it. It was cool to know that it's a powerfull hit. Donno how Luke choosed a moment to call us, but thank him. We wish that it will be the next single, but lyrics disturbed us. Maybe it's to problematic to made a single from such theme.
White Noise Wonderful. This song is one of the best TLE songs ever. It's soft and "girlish" and strong and hard in the same time. Vocal is wonderful. We think voice of Chris is changed with time, but in this song it sounds good! We love it!
Moment In The Sun Liked it very much. It sounds like MA or SOE song for us, very LivingEndish :) Good melody and cool lyrics. Vera liked it very much.
Waiting For The Silence Olya liked it better! It's so magical and melodic, but emotionally in vocals it feels that Chris is very serious and resolute. In this lyrics and melody are very strange and perturbing emotions. Song is super cool. And when I'm listening it I feel like I'm deep inside of music and melody. It's so grate! Thanx TLE!!!!
Make The Call We think Roll On has very hard sounded and smashing songs. So this one was not a surprise fro us. Riffs after second chorus is totally cool!!!! We can't compare this song with any other hard rock or heavy metal bands, because we think them are completely far from TLE way of thinking.
Loaded Gun Awesome! One of the strongest song on album. Lyrics is amazing. Emotions of voice and guitar make a feeling of trouble in the air. We think on this song Andy shows his professional handwriting in the whole perfectness! Guitar riffs is killing! Song is brilliant!
Kid Also very self TLE song. Very interesting and beautifull. But we still don't understand the meaning of lyrics. Guitar solo is powerfull and cool, we liked it so much.
21st Century MEGA!!!! Lyrics is the best! Super hit! Only russian "mat" (coarse language) can express our impression! Pizdec kak ohuenno!
Hey Hey Disbeliever We guess this is the mostly non typical TLE song, especially in sound. This guitar distortion remind us Muse guitar sound. But we like the song, and think it's fine.
Sum Of Us This is very special song. In fact we hate reggae. Can stand it only in Clash interpretation. Never expected such song from TLE. We totally loved it. Maybe this song we love the most from album. It's amazing. Vocal is brilliant!!! And lyrics touched us very deep. it's the problems which we faced every day. This song it's a best portrait of TLE special skills to be new and stay the same. This is the thing why we love them and think they are great band!
We told about some of b-sides before, but want only say that we liked them all, especially Live to love, Beware the moon, Suzy. Hopeless sounds like demo record, but song is ok. We agree with many of you who told that b-sides are too good to be just b-sides :)
So we can say only great great thank you very much for White Noise to all who made it happened. We are happy now, and feels like this is the new album of our old loving local band ;) We really live from music and each album of band we like it's a grate support for our souls in our life. On White Noise we can do alot of things! Now it inspired us to many of them and we guess we keep these tunes in our hearts for years. We are very glad that guys fight all troubles and give to us this big and better part of themselves. We appreciate this so much! It's so good to live when you have such wonderfull music with you!!! We love The Living End, all their fans, and wish to all the best!

I should mention that I think TLE albums are about the hardest to rank of any band because they are all so close. Every album has some of their best work on it and some less enjoyable songs. My rankings change a lot depending on how long it's been since I listened. I think MA has the most duds but also some of their best. SOE felt held back and could have been more. I need to go through them all again I think...

How is S/T so low in the list for a lot of you?? It's definitely my favourite TLE album.
Marv From NZ

Well for that album i have to be in the right mood really. Just like say with Against Me!'s Re-inventing Axl Rose album, which is super different from say New Wave or Searching For A Former Clarity, each is fairly unique and all serve its own purpose. Like any "post-punk" band, well for me in this instance, i can only take so much before the whole 3 chord, up-tempo ravaging musicianship gets a little tedious to me. I know that's pigeon holing S/T to some extent and its in no way meant to be bagging the album, but i think we can say that S/T is a raw record which has alot of those afore mentioned elements to it. Heck, even TLE have stated somewhere that they wanted to get away from that label and sound! Now this is where TLE is up there to me, because all of their albums are so different sounding from each other. Whatever mood of music i'm feeling like, any one of TLE's albums 99% of the time get me in the zone and capture what i'm after for that moment and subsequent minute, hour, day and alot of the times, week. Ok i'm gonna shut up now...

SOE is great but it only has 5 or 6 songs that i listen to and i just skip the rest (but they're all still good in themselves)
my list is:
1: WN
2: S/T
3: RO
4: MA
5: SOE
They're all VERY close so all on #1 would be suitable for me, but it keeps changing every time I put a new album in my cd player.
If EP's were included it would go:
1: Hellbound
2:IFYOG
etc
etc
Kid Also very self TLE song. Very interesting and beautifull. But we still don't understand the meaning of lyrics. Guitar solo is powerfull and cool, we liked it so much.
IMO the meaning is about child abuse

Thanx Sara and Glenn. All taht we said is true. We don't want to say that our life is bad, but it's not very easy and luxurious. Music was always big support for us from 13-14 years i guess, and bands that we really love are like a fellows who walk with you on your lonely road. Sometimes we think tahat our good times goes from album to album of bands that we love. It's happines that we are friends with one of them ( we mean our local heroes Mad Heads(XL)), they like a family for us.
We think it's a dangerous and not right to allow that something had so big meaning and influence on you in your life, but if it's make you happy who said it's bad? We don't know why rock music influence is so strong in our life, we are not a musicans, but it giver to us more that the other things and even people. The Living End became one of the favourite bands for us, so we like to talk about them and don't avaricious for compliments ;)

I think in album comparisons, you're either old school or new school..simple as that. Whichever album got you interested in TLE is probably going to rate your highest or at least 2nd. As for me...I'm old school... self titled has never been beaten in sales and still has a large proportion of songs in their general live show.

Yeh I must admit that I think at some stage every TLE album has been a favourite or very close to...In the end it just shows that they are a consistantly brilliant band. Most bands have duds and hits but they are so consistant...although I get the impression that MA is considered by the people closest in and around TLE is the worst..but I think that had to do with the change of direction.
And yes my name is dylan.

I havent got any of the other albums...(yet!) but most of White Noise is kinda a let down, Kid and that last song (the reggae one) suck big time. But I think Kid has a good solo? 21st Century has bad lyrics (Global warming isnt cool...thats some cringe worthy lyrics right there) but has a great solo.
Meh, Like most bands these day's..conforming.

I love albums that just fit together.
For me and album must fit together, i love albums like this.
Albums with a whole heap of random songs sort of annoy me, they can still have some amazing songs on them but just dont fit.
Here is my rankings of the Living End Albums In Turms of fitting together... and by no means do i actually like the albums in this order.
5. State Of Emergency
This album has some of my fav living end songs on it, tIL THE END, Wake Up, We Want More, Into the red and even nothing lasts forever.
But by no means does that mean it fits together at all!
The Album Just doesn't seem to fit to me...
It has no direction and seems to justget lost.
Fit Together Mark
4/10
4. Modern ARTillery
This album goes off in somany different directions its not funny.
So What... Short Notice.... The Room....In The End....Hold Up
The album explores like 47 differnet musical styles...
it has some fantastic songs, and its great too see the living end
Explore all different areas.... but it just doesnt fit....
and even The Living End themselves admit this is not their best work
Fit Together Mark
5/10
3. The Living End
This album is amazing.
The Living ends self titeld debut blew everyone (haha) out of the water.
Its Unique sound will help it remain One of Australias Greatest Ever Debut Album.
It Fits together great.... From the amazing prisoner to the rocking closing in (stramentel)
Fit Together Mark 8/10
2. White Nosie
The Living Ends Latest offering is a fantastic listen.
It just bursts out of the speakers and you fall in love with it instantly.
Its Just A bunch Of amazing songs stuck together....
And they surprizingly fit together quite well.
Some might say its the modern ARTillary that they always intended
I dunno wether i would say that though.
Fit Together Mark 9/10
1. Roll On
Number 1.... ROLL ON ROLL ON ROLL ON
Has there ever been a better album of pure aussie pub rock.
The answer is no... there has not.
This album is amazin... it just fits.
Every single song on there deserves its place... the tracklisting
couldn't be any better. Every song you just wanna scream along too.
Silent Victory sounds a hell of alot like An AC/DC song.
Roll on is an absoloute classic, Roll on And uncle harry to this day
Remains a crowd fav to this day.
And The Transitions From Song To Song (eg. SATL - CMH) Dont Seem Forced At all
Its and amazing album and works together fantasticly.
If you Have never listend too it all the way through... Why are you on this board :D... But seriously... DO IT.
Fit Together Mark 10/10
This is just my opinion... dont hate me for it.

I prefer not to think about but I do get the feeling that it could be nearing the end. I'd like to hope they go for as long as AC/DC, The Rolling Stones etc, maybe not quite THAT long.

seeing the boys play is one of my favourite things.
but, I've been thinking lately that it wouldn't be the end of the world if they started doing solo stuff, bigger side projects, etc. especially now, as they seem to finally have an album they are truely proud of.

Crow from Asia = Croatian
Sped = Spastic
PS = Plastic Surgery
CBF = Can't Be Fucked
Siberian = Serbian

You know what... I might have to agree with you. It's so hard to choose, WFTS is definately a classic though.
It kinder gives me a Staring At The Light vibe, which is one of my favourite TLE songs.

I'm still mentally processing the album, so I'm not quite ready yet to do a review, but I did want to say that first off, I am SO HAPPY to have new TLE to listen to. It's been way too long!
My overall first impression is that the music is excellent, but I think the lyrics leave a bit to be desired. I think some people have already commented to that effect. One friend of mine thought that maybe they were rushing, because this album was recorded so quickly. Actually, considering how fast they were in and out of the studio, this record is a damn impressive feat!!
I wish I could comment more on B-sides, but it's been a bitch to find them here in the States. (iTunes is not cooperating...) I've heard Suzy and love it, though! I hope that one can become a live staple, because I can just imagine how fun that would be at a show. I'm starting to ramble, so I'll stop here. Just wanted to throw my two cents in.

i'd have to say, after giving both the B-sides and the album an equal amount of listening...
i love the album, and think that the B-sides are good enough to be on an album of their own
waiting for the silence, loaded gun, raise the alarm and how do we know are my favourites
the lyrics are...good, i won't comment to much on them. but vocally, i think this is chris's best achievement...WFTS shows that, its incredible
having said all of that, i'm still listening to the album heaps, as well as the B-sides
i'll withold my ultimate judgement and favourite song until after a few more months :p

I kind of wanna see it now, i think its only a straight to DVD film but after all.... It is andy recomended :D
I was also wondering what people this about the meanings of the songs on the album.
Some are pretty obvious, like loaded gun... but what do people think about the other songs.
Im interested in waiting for the silence in particular
The Dying Start

It's about being dragged along by and idiot friend to a screamo gig. And you just stand there waiting for the silence all night long.

hahahah i think not :)

Colezy
08-19-2008, 02:28 PM
I think that WFTS is about the period of time leading up to/waiting for that moment when someone (probably Chris) was 'waiting for the smoke to clear' and when he finally 'surrendered' and things will start to look up for them as a band again. About them waiting for it to all end and go back to 'how it was last year'.
'I can't live without the attention
I feel lost, got no direction'
To me, that is the leading up to that moment thing that I said before. I think that Chris realised that (how he truly felt) and then he surrendered what he was doing, picked up the guitar again and then BAM! along came the HDWK riff! haha
'When all of the boys were making their noise' - Chris/Scott/Andy
'And the girls were trying hard to pretend' - their wives?
'We had it all back then' - pre-chris-losing-the-plot-and-not-knowing-what-he-wanted-to-do :p
'Now we're waiting for the silence to end' - how it felt during the time off from the band
That's just my opinion, but I've always sucked at interpreting the meanings of songs. That's probably why I nearly failed English in yr 11 :p
to me WftS is the realisation after MitS :p
