Whilst I haven't been to that many shows, I seem to make it to shows with amazing setlists!
There's heaps of songs I'd love to hear again, but I'm happy I got to see them at least once or twice, so my list of songs that I want to see that I haven't before is:
There Is No Radio
Trace of Doubt
Colezy

Well I've always wanted to hear a few live in person, but I don't think some have EVER been played... though I can't say for sure. Strangely enough, a bunch of them are from Roll On.
- Read About It
- Killing The Right
- Silent Victory
- Blood On Your Hands
- Don't Shut The Gate (has been played live, there's a boot of it from the Roundhouse 2001 show floating around)
- State Of Emergency (was played on SOE-era Longnecks tour in demo form as "Stand In Line", but never since)
Rats would be good to hear again too. Can't remember much of it.

how much musico you got glenn?
My iPod currently has 5713 tracks, my computer has a few albums more, but not much.
For those that don't own their own computer...buy an external hard drive. All my mp3's and music videos are on an external drive. They're cheap as chips these days, and despite my initial apprehension, you get no quality loss by playing your media off an external drive.
It also means if you want to trade stuff with your mates, you just unplug it and take it round to their house!

ha...wow
just take my really original choice of song i love and have never seen live
as if someone else loves Stay Away From Me as much as i do :)
i reckon its brilliant...the fast-paced style with all the riffs...its like a punkabilly metallica song
i consider myself priveleged to have experienced The Room live...
and i went to the SOE tour...so i'm happy to have seen One Step Behind, Black Cat, all the classics...
and Closing In would be another that would be fantastic to see live

Anything and everything (non-single) off "Roll On".
I feel like a broken record, but Roll On is one of the most criminally overlooked albums of all time, even by the band that made it.
Apparently the songs felt "overworked" and more "difficult" than "fun" live, I forget exactly where I read that but Chris was discussing how in retrospect he thought he was overcompensating with the complex arrangements, being upset at the "three-chord-punk" label.
But those "complex arrangements" would sound great live ESPECIALLY

I find it very strange how rarely TLE change-up the mix of songs they play, whether it's the setlists from night to night on any gkven tour, or even if you compare them over the YEARS (switching out, of course, a few songs from whatever album it is they're touring at the moment).
I've heard of musicians being either too unskilled or too consistently intoxicated to rehearse a bigger catalog of songs to pull from live, but neither of those apply to TLE (even when they're drunk, they're not THAT kind of drunk). Sometimes I feel like it's the inverse of most band/audience setlist disagreements: The band is nervous about breaking too far from live tradition, with a devoted hardcore audience that is more than ready for some unexpected gems to be busted out.
Also, good to hear from some fellow Roll On groupies...:p
damo0945
06-10-2009, 09:00 PM

yeah, well when they play overseas, they probably just want a setlist full of mainly singles, because people have a better chance of knowing that stuff. And i guess here in Australia too. Even now, i'll say stuff about The Living End, and people are like 'who?'. Even after mentioning songs like White Noise, What's On Your Radio and Prisoner of Society, a fair few people are still like 'umm sorry never heard of them'.
It can get quite frustrating.
Even though they are well known in Australia, they aren't considered a household name like eskimo joe or wolfmother somebody like that. Could be a reason why they mainly stick to singles.

Singles = better crowd reaction = better atmosphere. Plus it makes the lads feel better when the masses are singing their lyrics!
carrymehomestead
06-11-2009, 09:05 PM
Oh, I understand the reasoning. Doesn't make it any less gay though!!!
I just saw Nine Inch Nails on their farewell tour, they're a group that has been playing mostly the same set for years, in order to put on a planned-out, orchestrated "show' with synced-up lights and screens coming down from the ceiling and what-have-you.
Being that this was their last tour, I guess Trent finally realized, "Hey, these people have been coming to see me devotedly for years and years now...they probably know more than just the songs that have been beaten to death by radio!!". And so they traded out all the big production for the ability to cover the whole catalog. Like you said, maybe it's different with TLE at home and overseas, but at least here in America the people that are at TLE shows are hardcore devoted and knowledgable about the band's stuff. There's the obvious lean towards liking the "older stuff" that happens with any band, but...I feel like maybe the living end audience isn't getting enough credit...:blues:
I mean we drool excessively on the rare occasions they've busted out stuff like Read About It, or So Lonely (Longnecks gig), but what if stuff like that happened more often?? Even if just ONE song in the set was from outta left field. Closest thing I have to seeing something like that is watching them attempt and then abandon Witchdoctor (right at the start), then proceed to play "Mighty Mouse" after somebody yelled it out. Oh, and also, on night 2 of Aussie Invasion they played Maitland Street (as far as I know, the only time that songs been played?)
Edit: Also, I would think a more "household-name" or "hot" band would be more likely to stick to just the hits, as those bands are more likely to have audiences of people who are just there to be hip, who maybe heard a few clips of the singles on radio or TV. I could see those types of people being at TLE shows circa 1998 (when they were still hot shit in a pop culture sense) but at this point, isn't the audience composed of mostly long-time fans?? Or at least people who have full living end ALBUMS on their fuckin' ipod instead of a HANDFUL OF TRACKS!!!! (god I hate that). I can only speculate, though I would love to see them in their home country.

The main "hook riff" (I call it "main" because it happens twice in a 30 second song) is fuckin sweet!! They could totally jam on/add to/fuck around with that. They did it with All Torn Down, who the hell saw that coming?? It kinda sounds like a lost Hellbound riff. Does anyone else wish Chris would bust out some kinda psychobilly jam at the shows?? Around the time of Trav's last performances with the band (2001?? ish??) they had an instrumental called psychobilly....something. It was used to open the Roundhouse set, I believe...it was kind of like "E-Boogie"'s evil twin.
The Dying Start

Ah! You are correct about the name change. However, I am referring to the FIRST song in the Roundhouse set...I know it's in the video, so I assume it was carried over to the audio rips?? It's their little pre-roll on opening jam (and NOT the one that was used at BDO 2003 etc. that uses the same chords AS roll on)
Now that I think about it, "Apeface" kind of sounds similar to it, even though it dates back to 2001 (at least).

I'm not trying to knock ya'all, as I am a firm believer in "to each their own"-ed ness, but I have to say that "Bringin'..." is probably the worst song TLE have put to tape (in my humble opinion). There was a period, especially in between Modern Artillery and State of Emergency, where I was really quite worried about the band's future output (this also coincided with the fact that a lot of people speculated that the FHOI dvd was the band's swan song...). Not only does the music for BIABH go nowhere, but the lyrics (which can sometimes carry an otherwise boring tune) are HORRENDOUS. Especially after the lyrical peaks of Roll On, it seemed like maybe that car accident had possibly liquified Chris' brains forever ("it's too much to give it one more try/how can the truth still sound like a lie/why?".....*explodes*). AND it was one of the only new songs to come out in that no mans land period, so it got extra attention.
But the White Noise album has definitely proven Chris to be sharpening back up on that front again (see: Sum of Us, White Noise)

Man! I actually totally forgot about that track when I was posting. I wasn't too fond of the "single" version, but I ripped the audio from a bitchin' live performance (from "how to make an album and influence people"?? I think??) and that one got some heavy rotation.
I know lyrics aren't generally the main draw for TLE (the people in the pit bobbing their heads to POS certainly aren't comparing it to Shakespeare), but the first TLE album I purchased was Roll On in 2001, and I guess that album in a sense is an anomaly, not only in its musical diversity, but its lyrical style as well.
Even the b-sides are fuckin' poetry!! Homestead is probably my favorite TLE song, and it never gets mentioned...

The one from How To Make An Album And Influence People is from Splendour 2005..? I think it was also the b-side to the "yellow" (live'n'local pre-order only) version of the WOYR single. It's a badass version of the song. *thumbs up*
carrymehomestead
06-19-2009, 07:25 AM
Yes!! Splendour. Thanks for that. I haven't watched "How to make..." in some time, because it only came with the Aussie version of SOE that I imported, meaning its region-encoding won't let it play on my dvd player, only my computer. But they are definitely a band where HOW the sound is captured can make or break the songs, and they tend to sound better raw.
