I have a problem.
I formatted my computer a month or two ago, and consequently had to reinstall everything including Photoshop. I installed Photoshop from the exact same files I used last time. Identical.
OK, so on my previous install of Photoshop there were handles on the corner of each layer (and also in the middle of each side), which could be used for resizing and manipulating each layer individually.
My problem is that now, these handles have mysteriously disappeared and I can't find them in my options anywhere. Can anyone please tell me if they've had a similar problem or whereabouts the option for me to turn on these handles is?

hold alt+shift+ctrl+M to get the menu details up and choose the pallete menus
edit: click on the window menu and select the toolbars?

alt+shift+ctrl+M does nothing for me..
It's not actually a toolbar that I'm missing. It's the handles for resizing and transforming each layer.

Ok, this is what mine currently looks like. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v53/that_guy/undes.jpg)
This is what I want it to look like if I've got the "Silverchair" layer selected. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v53/that_guy/des.jpg)
It's just the lines around the perimeter of the layer that I want.

your version of photoshop looks ancient
that looks like the contents of the layer have just been selected

Yes, but my problem is that when I select the contents of the layer I'm not getting that border. Which means I can't resize the layer without putting it into a seperate file.
EDIT: the reason it looks so old is just because of my Windows Style and the way I've got it laid out.

oh, well select all then go edit -> free transform, and that lets you manipulate the contents selected
I might be wrong here, but in the toolbar on the right (with the brush/lassoo/burn/colour etc etc), click the button the top right, the pointer with a 4-way arrow next to it.
That should be what you're looking for, unless I've misunderstood the problem at hand!
i think what Kevin said is probably the way to do it Disease...
although what is confusing the crap outta me is:
in this file: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v53/that_guy/des.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v53/that_guy/des.jpg) you have Melbourne 1992 layer selected...
(i think it confused me because it didn't make sense for it to be the Silverchair layer... don't know if it is or not)
anyway... Free Transform (Ctrl + T) OR Transform (Edit/Transform/Scale etc...) is probably what you're after...
i occasionally have trouble with this feature if i'm using it on a shape layer... but if you have the move tool selected (the one that Jake described) you shouldn't have any issues... well, most of the time anyway...
i was just having a play with a text layer and discovered that in my version (CS for those of you playing at home) if i held down the CTRL key when i was resizing my text box it actually changed the size of the font i was working with in the same sort of way as if i used the Free Transform and Transform/Scale options - hooray for learning! :D
also perhaps try checking that your View/Extras (Ctrl + H) is checked - this may also be a reason that you can't see certain things...
let me know if any of this has been remotely helpful - problems are interesting!

Well, that is the move tool I believe you're talking about. When I select the move tool I can move the layers, but I still can't see the border around the layer. So if I'm moving a text layer, I can move it fine, but I can't see the boundaries of the edge of the layer.

Haha yes, I hoped that no one would notice that. I only noticed that after I'd uploaded the screenshot and I couldn't be bothered doing it again.

Yes, this option is checked.
BUT
Haha guess what, I just solved my problem. This box (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v53/that_guy/solution.jpg) wasn't selected! Problem solved. Thank you all for your help. :)

Mm, I reckon it might be second - just behind Windows.

I'm on CS.
our computer guru was supposed to get CS2 for me but hasn't!
he's naughty!
i do however have Illustrator CS2 - it's kinda pointless though 'cause i don't use illustrator nearly as much!
i'm glad you were able to solve your problem Disease - that bounding box thinger is kinda cool - i don't know if i'll be able to handle working with it - i shall try it another time - when i actually have th need to resize things in photoshop
