Haven't got mine as of yet and I haven't sent mine due to not being able to get to the post office cause of a screwed up school and bus timetable. Should be sent tomorrow though on one of my 2 free lines at school!

I just noticed this thread,

It should be in the Offtopic area of the forum.

But what can you do.

Aaron

But what can you do.
There's always the Glenn approach of loudly saying "well, if *I* were a mod..!" :p

I listened to my 'mixtape' today. Two CDs! 26 + 29 songs = awesome. I had heard none of the songs before, only heard one-fifth of the bands, and heard of only two-fifths of the bands. That said, I reckon I quite liked about eight- or nine-tenths of it, including a couple that are gonna be favourites :D. I just never got around to collecting much! (Too much time doing fractions? Haw haw.) :p

Aaron

Good ol' rockabilly styles. The guitar should be more prominent, though :p. But really, it's just nice to hear a song not about Cadillacs for once!

yes the music is important, but as if the cover art isnt a big deal.
everyone buys the new tle single, then they post here and go "great song, good b-sides, but damn the cover art sucked" or whatever. it IS important.

awww man - this is torturous... :p

dear whoever got me as their person to send the mixtape CD thing through to,
i can't wait to receive it, and listen to whatever you've put on there for me.
i am also getting really curious as to who you are and hope that making the CD for lil old me hasn't been too much of a pain in the butt!

PS i gave Kev my work address so that he could send it through to you 'cause i only get 3 mail deliveries to my house per week and work gets post 3 times a day (or so it seems)

i hope the rest of your day is good AND that you're enjoying your CD (ie. the one that got sent through to you from the board... that is if you've received it yet)

i don't wanna have to do work at the moment

Yay I got mine today! Called 50 ace tunes and i'm just a quarter of the way through. Pretty good so far, I really disliked the first song I listened to so I was worried I wouldn't like it but it's great! The tracklisting is being emailed to me in a week or two which is a good idea. :D

That's a relief, I was beginning to wonder if I stuffed something up in the postage or it got lost in the post :) Look forward to hearing what you think

Even though my senders name is on the back, I don't know who it is... I don't know of any Fionas on the board. Well whoever you are Fiona, you've done a top job. You put alot more work into it than I did with mine :o I'll post a proper review once I get the tracklisting. It'll probably be easier that way :)

before the board crashed and this new one was established, we set up a CD trade. someone sends you a mix CD and you send one to someone else, preferably anonymously.

I'm sure there'll be another trade on this board at some point, there was one at Christmastime as well.

FYI, I mailed mine on Wednesday, so it should get there this next Wednesday or so. I imagine it's somewhere between Los Angeles and Sydney right now.

1. Nowhere Without You - Bob Evans
Already had this song, but love it, nice melodic pop, very catchy verses.
2. Forever And A Day - The Dissociatives
Actually own this album, someone gave it to me... but never really got around to listening to it properly, enjoyed this track so might give the album another go.
3. Armies Against Me - Epicure
Already had this song - love it, one of my favourites; need to get around to buying their newest album, Tightrope Walker is such a good track.
4. One Crowded Hour - Augie March
How could I have not heard this song? So good, especially the video clip.
5. Brick - Ben Folds Five
Sob. What a song, own the album, love it.
6. Hands - The Saboteurs
Have been trying to get my hands (oh har har) on this track for a while, has a really great intro.
7. 10 A.M. Automatic - The Black Keys
Have this song. Very great, one of my favourite BK tracks.
8. Thankyou (For Loving Me At My Worst) - The Whitlams
Love The Whitlams, and I can now remember hearing this song on the radio a while back, really enjoyed it, nice horns.
9. Bittersweet - Hoodoo Gurus
Nice, but prefer other Hoodoo Gurus tracks. I think it will grow on me.
10. Dear Lover - Social Distortion
Just been getting into Social D, so good to hear some more tracks, very catchy.

I shall write about the rest of the tracks, when I have more time, but I am going away tomorrow, so sorry about the delay in advance.

Good mix all in all, I had quite a few of the tracks already, and knew all the artists, but enjoyable all the same. To my person, I've just been listening to your mix and it shall be in the mail soon, sorry about the lateness.

I sent you the CD.

I wasnt entirely happy with the CD. When I sent it and looked back at the tracklisting, I had written down on a scrap bit of paper, there were other tracks that I shouldve included but didnt.

That bonus track I found on the net, and thought it was fairly cool. It doesnt work well in 5.1 audio, but works quite well with headphones.

Caity sent me a cd with nothing but Australian accents. fully sick mate.

1) Songbird - Bernard Fanning
it's pleasant, I dig it. I'd listen to it while driving. (it reminds me of Jack Johnson, though I feel dirty for saying that)

2) Things I Love In You - Cold Chisel
fact: this is my first time EVER hearing this band. I bet this is what the guy in the beat-up truck with stickers proclaiming its status as a 'real Aussie ute' was listening to.

3) Something So Strong - Crowded House
I listened to half of it and hit skip, but in the most respectful "yeah these guys are legends" way possible

4) Sarah - Eskimo Joe
5) This Old Love - Lior
6) Thrillology - Powderfinger
yeah, these three are all wonderful.

7) Vicious Girl - the White Room
I saw these guys at a 'scenester bar' and, while I'm not big on their music, they were still good. I was varying levels of drunk though.

8) Call to Arms - Bodyjar
I own this album, damn it's sweet.

9) Across the Night - Silverchair
*shudder* there's a reason why this band isn't half as big stateside

10) Second Class Citizen - Area 7
rad. old school right? I dunno, I saw them play and NO ONE (band included) seemed to like the idea of them playing new songs.

11) Doctor Doctor - Gyroscope
you guys have your own Thursday/Taking Back Sunday... that's a bummer.

12) Friday On My Mind - the Easybeats
I hit skip on this one too, ah wells.

13) O Yeah - End of Fashion
this isn't bad, I'd hate it if it was all over radio or something but it's fairly decent

14) Drop the Mirror - Missy Higgins
yeahhhh I like what I've heard from her!

15) Power and the Passion - Midnight Oil
another one of those bands that, from hanging around on this board, I should have listened to by now. and dang, it's good.

interesting mix for sure, thanks Caity :)

11) Doctor Doctor - Gyroscope

12) Friday On My Mind - the Easybeats

YOU'RE JOKING!! Oh my...haha. I love Across The Night. Similarly I love Friday On My Mind.

And honest to God, I think Gyroscope are very very far from Thursday or Taking Back Sunday. Although I guess the song Doctor Doctor is a little bit like TBS.

Friday on my mind is one of my absolute favourite songs of all time too!

but i spose it's a case of different strokes for different folks...

in other (more related to this thread) news:

i got my CD in the mail!

it's SO random!

i haven't figured out who sent it yet - but whoever it was - i can't read your handwriting very well so i don't know how i'm going to do a review for you/everyone...

the title of the CD is "Non English Language 'N' Shit" and it was wrapped in an empty Dove chocolate packet!

:O

it's kinda making my brain hurt a little...there is a little bit of fun to be had - thank god for Joan Baez

:)

*M!

some of it isn't too bad actually - doubt i'll get high rotation status though...

*M!
09-21-2006, 01:23 PM
i think i've changed my mind...

whoever wrote the tracklisting and the title of the CD is a different person to whoever wrote the address and a little added bit of information about this being a data CD (as opposed to something that i can play on a CD player)

i think that whoever wrote the track listing is older than whoever sent me the CD just based on the handwriting...
does that sound dumb?

Disc One
Party Hard - Andrew W.K. - I don't like this song. Cheesy lyrics and pretty boring
Holy Shit - Against Me! - I like this. My friends always go on about this band and they're pretty great. Catchy chorus
Unprotected Sex With Multiple Partners - Against Me! - Very Franz Ferdinand sounding at the start, I like it alot. Very different to Holy Shit.
Vella Lave - Adelle - The singers voice is really annoying especially at the start but pretty cool song. Fairly different.

Disc Two

Blue Moon Of Kentucky - Zombie Ghost Train - Prefer tle's version. This track got skipped usually
Twenty Fight Rock - Zombie Ghost Train - Better but still not a big ZGT fan
Devil Child - Zombie Ghost Train - Decent song but gets boring. Usually got skipped. Don't like the singers voice
Rockabilly Hound Dog - Wanda Jackson - Depends what mood im in. Pretty cool song though.
C'mon C'mon - The Von Bondies - The first track I recognised. Love it. So damn catchy!
Rad - VCR - The synth puts me of a bit. Not my thing but ok.
Atomic - Tiger Army - I think I heard this on Tony Hawks or something. Pretty cool song. Catchy.
Pretty Fucked Up - Supersuckers - I like this song alot. Cool lyrics, catchy chorus. Gotta love the line 'she used to be pretty but now she's just pretty fucked up :D'
Fighting '59' - Shark Soup - Ahh so this is the band that a few of the boarders went nuts about. The guitar is very old school tle sounding. I like it but not something i'd listen to alot.
Hey Pachuco - Royal Crown Revue - Pretty funky big band style song but again, not what i'd usually listen to.
S.O.S. - Rocket From The Crypt - A grower. The horns make the song alot better. Great song, really simple.
Streets Fell Into My Window - The Red Paintings - Different, will need to give it more listens still.
Older Than Punk - The Peacocks - I love the chorus. Really, really good. Love the bass line.
Please Not Now - The Peacocks - Again, I really like the bass but this song isn't as good as Older Than Punk. Short, punchy song
Ballroom Blitz - The Peacocks - Killer version of a classic. Very different to the original song too. Fantastic.
Thoughts Of A Dying Atheist - Muse - Nice song but i'm still not a very big Muse fan.
King Without A Crown - Matisyahu - I had heard this song on JJJ alot before I got this but was used to the live faster version of it. Great reggae tune.
Silence - Mad Caddies - Love the horns on this. Everything gels together really well. I should look more into this band.
What It Feels Like - Lola Ray - Nothing too different but cool song.
Bandages - Hot Hot Heat - I think I might have heard this song before. Absoloutley love it. Such a catchy song. Best chorus ever. I'll have to look into Hot Hot Heat
Carry Me Home - Hellacopters - Nice song. Don't hate it, don't love it.
By The Grace Of God - Hellacopters - Like this song alot more. Catchy intro.
Big Rock Candy Mountain - Harry McClintock - Haha what the hell? Weird
Light Of A Fading Star - Flogging Molly - Not a big celtic punk fan. Ok song.

Disc 3
(I Don't Want To Go To) Chelsea - Elvis Costello - Funky song. Everything fits together nicely. Love the bass line.
Skinny Jim - Eddie Cochran - Nice song but not something i'd listen to
Coin-Operated Boy - The Dresden Dolls - Had heard this song before. Used to dislike it alot but I really like it now. I should go buy a Dresden Dolls album.
Mother - Danzig - Don't really like it. The singer irritates me
Man Of Constant Sorrow - Dan Tyminski - Weird, not my thing.
Scratch My Back - The Creepers - I really, really like this song. Flows really well.
You're My Baby - The Creepers - Very different to Scratch My Back. Don't like it as much but still a good song.
Jumpin' From 6 To 6 - The Creepers - Another good song. I'll have to look out for The Creepers.
The Willing Well IV: The Final Cut - Coheed & Cambria - I thought this was a Mars Volta song at first. It's ok.
Keeping The Blade - Coheed & Cambria - This got skipped.
My Enemy - Cog - I had heard this song and a few others from Cog but I didn't know they did this song. I really like it. Catchy chorus, nice lyrics
96 Quite Bitter Beings - CKY - Had heard this on Tony Hawks 3. Nice intro.
Hard Time Killing Floor Blues - Chris Thomas King - This got skipped
Devil's Eyes - Buck 65 - Had seen the clip on rage before. Haunting song, catchy though.
Dirty Leaves - The Bronx - I like this song. The singers got a really good voice. Good lyrics too.
Welcome To The Black Parade - My Chemical Romance - Haha mission accomplished Adele. If you hadn't sent me the tracklisting after I heard this I wouldn't have given it much of a listen. Had heard it on JJJ and when I realised it was My Chemical Romance I felt a little silly for always bagging them hehe. Very Queen sounding. A bit over the top in parts though.
Covered In Cowardice - Billy Talent - Ok.
Steve Irwin - Ballpoint - Pretty sad listening to this after watching the memorial. Nice song.
The Gauntlet - Bagster - Really like the use of horns in this. Might have to check out Bagster.
8 O'Clock - Bagster - Really funky song! I like it.
I.D - Bagster - Different to the other two songs but still great.
Clear To Pass - Antiskeptic - Meh, it's ok.

Thats all i had to read to know it was a killer album!!! Although the best WK song is 'We Want Fun' which was used on the Jackass Film soundtrack.

Now i feel bad for only doing one CD. Anyway - i actually found it hard because i only had 1 from each of my favourite bands. First of all, it was hard to get 17 bands that have made an impact on my life and then to pick only 1 song from each. It was really hard but i hope my person likes it. They should have recieved it by now.

Oh, It was the same person: Me who wrote everything on it, i just have schizo handwriting. I did add that data cd stuff after I realised those cds dont play in my cd player.

Yeah, most that stuff I don't listen to that regularly either but its a bit of fun!

I do love throat singing though.

I got a package in the mail today that was obviously cds, but it turned out they were from my brother.
They were really interesting though! Has anyone ever listened to the "theme time radio hour" or something like that? I don't know the whole story behind it but it seems bob dylan hosted it a few times or something, and they give you a theme and you host the radio show and play songs to that theme. he's really cheesy but a lot of the songs are really good!

*edit* just found this site about it:
http://www.xmradio.com/bobdylan/

And, yeah, I'd put it in the entertainment forum that me and caity used to mod, but oh, gee, we don't have one any more. *pout*

here is my tracklisting from my "Non English Language 'N' Shit" CD from Kylie

01. Täss'on nainen - Hedningarna
there's something quite hypnotic about this track

02. ZIM - - ZIM-LICH GUAT
this song gave me such a big smile when i first heard it - whod've ever thought i'd smile at a song that has yodelling in it! :O

03. Throat Singing Duet - Shu-De
this is amazing! not something i could listen to as a whole album but i was blown away by the sound of this - makes me want to visit a country where they can make these sounds

04. la vie est belle - MC Solaar
don't think there is more contrast on this album than between throat singing and this song - the grove is much more familiar to me but it's not really something i can see myself listening to often

05. L'Via L'viaquez - the mars volta
i've heard this one before - not often but in the context of this album i was surprised to find a band i was quite familiar with - the guitars in this are great but at 11:05 i struggle to listen to it more than once a day

06. Afrika (Africa) - Tukuleur
familiar tune (thanks to Toto) unfamiliar take on it (language used (french) and there's more drum used...) i always feel like singing along in English... :O hehe

07. La Primavera - Manu Chao
i've heard this song about 6 times since i got this CD but still never remember it... favourite bit is when they go Acapella and then the music starts again

08. Giorgio Conte / Gne Gne - Putumayo World Music
the drum brushes and the clarinet (maybe...)!!! swing in another language... love the beat, makes me think of little kids when they go "nar ne nar ni nar nar" i like! :)

09. Mwela, Mwela (Here I Am) - Jazzanova
dance music... not such a fan - it's not a bad track - i find it odd to hear so much english in this song after all the other tracks

10. Voodoo Child (Slight Return) - Angélique Kidjo
i have heard this song before - the groove is very pleasant and the english in this doesn't distract me at all! i wouldn't mind hearing more from this artist

11. Mucha Muchacha - Esquivel!
another song i've heard previously - go the brass! my memory fails to place this song in the context i've heard it but i like it - i always hum along to the chorus!

12. Nansi Imali - Ladysmith Black Mambazo
there are some really beautiful harmonies in this that remind me that the voice is a beautiful instrument

13. Vuv Kuba - Bratq Mangasarian
35 seconds into this song they say "Ice Ice baby" i only noticed that today and it cracked me up! not my favourite piece on the album - i still get sucked into humming along with it - it's very repetitive though

14. I'm Feeling Blue - aiko
there's something about this song that really irritates me - maybe it's her voice, maybe it's cause i want to sing along but can't - if i figure it out - i'll let you know!

15. Guantanamera - Joan Baez
Joan Baez :) one of my faves, i've heard this before and it makes me think of some very special people in my life, never fails to make me feel all warm and fuzzy

16. Patio Custodio - Paco de Lucia
guitar and the hand claps (?) in this are great - not such a fan of the vocals - i want to play them backwards to see if there is any hidden messages! actually - that's not very fair - it's smack bang in the middle of my two favourite tracks so it's hard to be fair whilst listening to it!

17. Tamacun - Rodrigo y Gabriela
the guitar in this is wonderful! one of the standouts on the album for me - i literally fell in love with this song first listen and will play it until i'm sick of it i'm sure!

18. Desaparecido - Manu Chao
not a bad way to finish off the album - i wouldn't mind getting my hands on a translation of this song there are words that sound familiar to me - it would be interesting to see if the bits i understand are accurate.

all in all it wouldn't be something that i'd listen to all that often but there are some really great songs on here.

It's actually kinda refreshing to listen to things that i normally wouldn't for a change. :)

i was also quite surprised that i was familiar with so many of the songs (keeping in mind that you left off songs like "Ca Plane Pour Moi", "La Bamba" and "Mi Burrito Sabanero"... all of which i know quite well...)

THANKS KYLIE! :D

Here is the translation for 'desaparicido'or however you spell it according to some guys myspace.

They call me the disappearing one, Cos when they come I've already gone.
Come so quick, go so fast, They always end up lost.
When they hunt me I'm not there, When they find me I'm elsewhere, They're just closing in, cos I'm just moving on. They call me the disappearer The phantom who never is, They call me the ungrateful, But that's not the way it is. I carry on me a pain and sorrow, that doesn't let me breathe, I carry on me a final sentence, That always makes me leave. They call me the disappearing one, Cos when they come I've already gone, Come so quick, go so fast, They always end up lost. I carry in my body a motor that's always running and alive, I carry in my soul a destination, but I never will arrive. They call me the disappearing one, Cos when they come I've already gone, Come so quick, go so fast, They always end up lost. Lost in the century, the 20th century, Heading for the 21st

wait, is that right? Im not sure how it managed to rhyme in english as well as spanish?

here are the spanish lyrics for any delightful spanish speakers who would totally love check that.

Me llaman el desaparecido
Que cuando llega ya se ha ido
Volando vengo, volando voy
Deprisa deprisa a rumbo perdido
Cuando me buscan nunca estoy
Cuando me encuentran yo no soy
El que est enfrente porque ya
Me fui corriendo ms all
Me dicen el desaparecido
Fantasma que nunca est
Me dicen el desagradecido
Pero esa no es la verdad
Yo llevo en el cuerpo un dolor
Que no me deja respirar
Llevo en el cuerpo una condena
Que siempre me echa a caminar
Me llaman el desaparecido
Que cuando llega ya se ha ido
Volando vengo, volando voy
Deprisa deprisa a rumbo perdido
Yo llevo en el cuerpo un motor
Que nunca dejade rolar
Yo llevo en el alma un camino
Destinado a nunca llegar
Me llaman el desaparecido
Cuando llega ya se ha ido
Volando vengo, volando voy
Deprisa deprisa a rumbo perdido
Perdido en el siglo

well, since it was mentioned...

it's a rather rough translation. lo siento, soy estudiante, estoy aprendiendo

they call me the disappeared
that when it comes, I've already gone
flying I come, flying I go
quickly quickly to a lost course
when they never look for me, I am
when they find me, I am not
the one that is opposite because already
I left running some more there
they call me the disappeared
the phantom that never is
they call me the ungrateful
but that's not the truth
I carry in my body an ache
that does not allow me to breathe
I carry in my body a condemnation
that always throws me to walk
they call me the disappeared
that when it comes, I've already gone
flying I come, flying I go
quickly quickly to a lost course
I carry in my body a motor
that never stops running [I think... wtf is 'rolar']
I carry in my soul a pathway
destined to never arrive
they call me the disappeared
that when it comes, I've already gone
flying I come, flying I go
quickly quickly to a lost course
lost in the century

Well, Kevin just said that he hasn't..not sure about anyone else though.

Andre, I still havent had time to tell you what I thought about mine!
So here goes!

I loved it all, except one or two tracks which I still havent listened to fully (can't think of their names right now). I did love Enemies Closer (The White Room for those of you playing at home). There were 5 or 6 that I have already heard of (song and band) and a few bands that I had heard of but not listened too. Anyway, still a good CD, thanks heaps :)

oh yeah, i also didn't get a cd, seems my area is a black hole for cds
The amount of CDs you have recieved may or may not be inversely proportional to my laziness. :o

I'll give it to you soon, I swear. Half my music is your music, anyway!

Sorry to ruin the 'surprise', but you'd have known it was me anyway :p

Kevin

ah ha! it'd be full of the grates and flogging molly, wouldn't it? :p

Aaron

Haha, I was gonna pick *one* good song by each of them, I swear. Plus a bunch of other stuff. It wasn't going to be shithouse.

I'll still give it to you at some point. Hopefully you like some of it, and it doesn't make your eyes roll too much.

I just wrote names on bits of paper, shoved them in a hat, and my brother pulled them out..

Crazy.

Crazy.that is kinda freaky - i honestly am a bit floored by that... i feel like drawing pictures to represent how circular the CD love was... but i won't 'cause that's kinda poxy (it's my word of the day - hooray!)

I never got a cd :(poor Adele - i'd send you one but you probably wouldn't like it - that seems to be what happens when i send CDs of music i like to people that i don't really know very well...

:O

i found this while browsing the forum, and me thinks i wanna do one. does anyone else agree/disagree?

i think now would be great timing. it'd make for a great secret santa-esque gift.

Perhaps. People can be a bit lazy, and also we've found that the post office is shit.

The Dying Start

...but mostly people are lazy...

MODERNART.illery
12-06-2008, 01:44 PM
well don't be so lazy...maybe we should have some sort of incentive...what? i don't know but it's an idea..

MODERNART.illery
12-06-2008, 02:21 PM
i've got it...a tle guitar shaped beanbag...the only problem is that it doesn't really look like a guitar....other than that, its fine. so like a random particpant gets chosen and wins....a beanbag.

poifect.

Infiction
12-06-2008, 03:04 PM
thats a pretty weak incentive.

MODERNART.illery
12-06-2008, 05:01 PM
well it sure beats your incentive...

Kacky

Nono, I'm sure Infiction's is better!

I have a cd burner that actually works now! :p It was broke'd the first few times thus I missed out. I might be up for it if it goes ahead ;)

MODERNART.illery
12-07-2008, 07:57 PM

I'll probably be up for it but it'd be better if you give it a week or so to try and get a few more people, maybe make a new thread too...

MODERNART.illery
12-07-2008, 10:14 PM
i'mmmmm on it!

Colezy
12-07-2008, 10:16 PM
I'm up for it again, I guess.

But I say that we wait until AFTER CHRISTMAS. Australia Post are even worse during the xmas period than they normally are :)

MODERNART.illery - sorry, not sure that I know your name, but do you want me to do it all? I've participated in the last three or four of these so I know how it all works and stuff :) Just a suggestion!

MODERNART.illery
12-07-2008, 10:21 PM
the name is sam, and i've already started the other thread, but you can take over if you want to.

Colezy
12-07-2008, 10:29 PM
Hi Sam! :p

Meh. I don't care! I mean, it's not hard...but if you want to do it too, you need to ask a family member to pull out the name of the person who will be sending to you and get them to send a PM to them, so that you don't know who will be sending to you..if that makes sense?

Like...make a standard PM that will go to everyone, but leave a blank space for the persons name and who ever draws out a name on your behalf can type in the name of the person sending to you :)

MODERNART.illery
12-07-2008, 10:30 PM
sounds easy. and i'm guessing by my other readings and the obvious 'colezy' your name is nicole?

Colezy
12-07-2008, 10:33 PM
Oh yeah. It is :p
