Pretty much the same as the last board.
Anyway Im halfway writing the verses for a punky/metal crossover song similar to the Misfits I spose:

It's a teeny attack!

They started with Lee and moved onto Dean

My songs rely heavily on the melody to be able to read the lyrics proper-like (like most music) and also have a bit of comedy which isn't really comedy but more just sort of lessens the seriousness of what WOULD be a serious song.

This song is particularly lame.

I just program the drums (but I do play them as well lol) because I dont have a goo enough mic to record mine (and I can make them insanely fast/complex) then do vox over the top. then I send it to my friend who puts guitar over the top whenever he can be bothered :P

Once Ive done my part he'll do the guitar and hey presto! instant cheesy power metal with thrash style vox cos thats the only style i can do half decently (and I dont like death vox that much even though i can do them well) :p

Ah, here's a couple of songs I wrote/recorded a long time ago: Screwdriven (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=21927666&MyToken=bcde7f4c-5bad-4da2-90d1-4bebdccb0c55). I didn't spend heaps of time on them. :p You'll notice there's a fair bit wrong with "I'm Alright". It's not heaps in time.. and the lyrics.... I sort of made them up on the spot. :p

I should be getting some recording done with my band next month. :)



EDIT: I just listened to them again, for the first time in a long time. Probably a year or so. I actually really like "Drifter". It's got a certain feel to it, an atmosphere about it that I like. Of course the piano's a bit muddy and whatnot, but I think it works ok..

As for "I'm Alright", I think it'd sound a lot better with some bass. And if the piano was in time it'd be super. I think the outro works really quite well though. I like the layering I did of vocals and piano.

For the record, on "Drifter" there is one piano track, 4 vocal tracks and a bass track. On "I'm Alright" there is only 1 piano track for most of it (although there's 2 in the intro and 3 in the outro), and 3 or possibly 4 vocal tracks.

I've only listened to Drifter. It sounds good! I'm no songwriting expert, but here's some thoughts:

-Vocals at the beginning need to be brought up in the mix a bit (more of a production issue than a songwriting issue though)

-I love the bit where it picks up energy (about 2:12 in). Are you planning to make that....bigger? You could add drums to the song, really inconspicuous at the start but then at that bit I'm picturing a huge, over-the-top dramatic sound - crazy drums with lots of cymbals, and strings, and 72-part harmonies, and maybe fuzzed-up overdriven guitar

-Some of the layered vocal lines could work better as just a single vocal track. Because the verses are kind of breathy, the doubled vocals can make it too cluttered. Sparseness would be good. Or maybe have one of the vocal tracks really quiet, well down in the mix

-The piano playing is nice, and in time (gold star for you! :) ), and the short, simple hook works well

-If you want you could easily make the song longer. Add in another verse and chorus, then it'll become a real slow-burner which will accentuate the impact of the "big" bit


Overall it sounds way spiffy. For me, it evokes the image of a guy sitting at a deserted, smoky bar with a glass of red wine by the piano....Good work!

Hehe, thanks for the feedback.

As I said, it's a long time since I worked on these tracks. And I might add when I did mix them it was on very crappy speakers. I was considering redoing them sometime now that I have some nice speakers. We'll see.

With the quiet vocals at the start.. that was sort of on purpose. I wanted them to be quiet, sort of a lull in the back of your mind. Especially the harmonies sung in the background - they were supposed to be in the background moreso than the sort of.. well.. mumbling in the foreground.

I hadn't really thought of making that end bit much bigger. I don't know, we'll see. I was planning on showing the song to my band to see what they thought of it sometime soon. Things might happen.

I know the song is a bit short. I wasn't really sure what more to put in there though. I don't know, I'll see what I can do.

As for the piano part.. it's actually one of the first things I wrote. And I still really like it. I was sitting down going over the song the other day (I think it was actually just after posting it here, funny) and I made up a slightly more interesting piano part for the bridge-y (big) part.. still the same chords, just elaborated a little more.

Yay for the deserted smokey bar feel. :)



EDIT: I just spent about 10 minutes remixing some of it. It does sound pretty much the same, but a couple of parts I brought up a bit more etc. If I wanted to do much more to it I'd have to re-record it. Which I really couldn't be bothered doing for the moment.

I also just uploaded a couple of instrumental tracks (Song #5 and Synthesize Me) I recorded a while ago.

I actually am from America, and I don't "Pledge Alliegence" or any of that shit, and personally I'm not a fan of Bush's politics. But I don't really think that it's right for someone to bash his domestic policy who doesn't live in the country, now Foreign policy is fine. For the last song of my LOTR concept album we (ie me) are having trouble deciding how to finish the song.
Ive come up with 3 options different options on what style the song will finish with (keeping in mind the first part of the song with probs be a ballad style song similar to Metallica's 'nothing else matters' and the beginning of 'one')

1. Keep the ballad style the whole song

2. In similar fashion to "one" end the song with an up-tempo thrash/power metal solo that lasts a good 4-5 mins

3. Fade out of the song with a fairly slow, technical solo behind a drum beat that resembles this:
