View Full Version : Germans are stupid - the "help Yvonne understand things"-thread

I plan on using this every now and then when I'm not sure what stuff means.
For example, I keep hearing "when the fat lady sings" (or "hear the fat lady sing") in songs. What does this actually mean??
And what was the Wagefield (?) Riot??

When the fat lady sings = when it's all over. When everything is done.

is this limited to death or just generally things ending.
haha - thinking about it closer - it's a pretty stupid thing to say actually...
but yeah - what Glenn said!
*Edit: usually they say: "it's all over when the fat lady sings" or something like that - so it's not limited to death - just ending...

It originated from the Opera. People knew when an opera was over when a lady started singing, who was fat :P.

Colloqually I think it is probably implied more as a statement of defiance. Like "its not over till the fat lady sings." Along similar lines of "don't count your chickens before they hatch." It is a way of saming the game isn't over yet, and that anyone can still win.

The way they teach languages at school in Australia is pretty ineffective. I learned German from year 1 until year 10 and I can't speak, write or hear it in a way that is going to be useful. I'm pretty sure I was never even taught that there are cases!
It probably gets better in year 11 and 12 but yeah, primary school language teaching isnt too great!
Kevin
09-08-2006, 01:53 PM
a teacher at my high school taught her kid french for the first few years of her speaking life, then started teaching english.
i think that'd be effective, as long as she realised that most people around here speak english and didn't form a hybrid language for herself
i wish i had a hybrid language...
but i can barely speak english with the correct effect...
hehe

nah, it doesn't. I did Japanese from grade 7 til 11. I didn't know much at the end of that year (although i got one of the highest results in the class if you don't count the students that came from Japan). I can barely read hiragana and katakana now (pft and you can forget about kanji), but i can't understand anything...maybe neko, or wakarimasen ('i don't understand', that was my favourite one). Bah, i'd love to be fluent in Japanese, but that's not going to happen when you're at school.

Unless you go to a super duper private school....alot of the cunts at our school were super linuists by the time they were through.
I never had time for it...boring as batshit.

GLENN! thats a horrible thing to say! I used to have to eat gruel for three meals a day and I had a german teacher who didnt speak english OR german. Meanwhile, you fancy pants private school jerks had focaccias and excellent language classes that you thought were "BORING!"
pffft bloody private school kids with their trinkets and books. :P

Our primary school's was supposedly pretty good, we had science lessons and art lessons in german. I got totally sick of it in high school as all we ever did was study the uses of all the different words for 'the'. A language should only have one word for 'the' damnit.

Ja!
.....
.....
I hadn't spoken German for ages when my past exchange student emailed me on my birthday this year, so I had to remember it all/get out my old revision guide so I could reply haha. Now we have a pretty steady email-contact, which although stays pretty basic, will definitely help me remember (and hopefully develop) my German.
