i need to save up for a new guitar. i got my first electric back in march, unknowinly get ripped off from a place in footscray. i knew it was second hand and everything and i didnt know anything about guitatrs. then after a while a string broke. i took it to another place and they were like how much did u pay for this and i was like $120 and they were like well they r only like worth $50 and they have stopped making them years ago. Its was old. Its a Magnum. So yea, i was highly pissed off about that. $120 that i could have put towards a new guitar. And another string is broken. *sigh* sorry for crapping on. But yeah, any advice on a good sounding new guitar thats cheap that you know of?

I'm looking for a nice acoustic, steel string. I fell in love with the Maton m225c, so i'm gonna see what I can do to aquire me one, screw the gretsch, I want this beautiful baby!

sans pickup. I don't want it and it's heaps more expensive! Although, the pick-up-less one has black binding. I want cream binding, the black looks terrible in my opinion.. oh I hope they actually make my dream guitar!
you can get better matons :P

I recently bought a 100w Fender FM, and a little Zoom effects unit. I got both of them together for a little over $800, and they've been really great so far. I can finally play gigs without having to borrow school equipment. For a fairly inexpensive amp, the Fender has a marvelous clean tone, and the little effects unit can produce some great distortions. Haha, I feel like I've finally got all the equipment I need to function, an electric, a steel string acoustic, a classical, an amp and an effects unit. It's only taken 10 years. :p

What store in Footscray?
I got mine at Troys, but I know the other tiny store there. When I went shopping there, the guy seemed like a real desperate salesman. Creeped me out.
My guitar is something like a squire malibu strat? Is that right? I don't even know. Just something to learn on. I'll decide soon if I want to invest more in guitar-ing.

I've got a Maton 325 and a 225. I use them both usually two gigs a week.
They're not the best playing guitar at all but acoustically they sound really awesome, and great sounding when plugged in. Most of all they are a working musicians guitar, the number of regular working guys in australia that use matons deffinatly out weigh most other brands... A real work horse thats for sure. Thats why I got them, im not an acoustic guy at all but I just needed some guitars that can be played hard night after night and keep going
Is the 225 the cheapest model that goes for around a grand or less? I may be getting my models confused. Because I tried one and thought it was a horrible sounding acoustic in the store.

I can dig it, ain't nothing wrong with that! :)
Looks like you tried to match the audio levels of TLE's recording? Hard to do, particularly without using compression or limiting. Digital audio cannot exist above 0dB, anything above that simply gets cut off. This is called hard clipping, which is a much more abrupt and unmusical type of distortion. It has a grainy, "digital" sound. What a terrible way to describe it
In your recording it clips quite a lot. This can happen at two stages, when you are recording your tracks it is a good idea to keep an eye on the input audio levels. If you play or sing and the meters pass 0dB within Cool Edit it will clip your recording. This is probably the worst, because there is no way to fix it other than re-record the track. Aim to have your tracks peak at around -12dB, this will give you enough headroom to prevent clipping the audio yet provide you with enough volume to maintain audio resolution.
The second is when mixing, this can happen within plugins or at the master fader. You want to keep everything below the 0dB mark. Once you get all your levels right, check the master fader. If it does into the red (0dB or above) if will clip your final mixed down audio file. If it goes into the red, pull the fader down till it stops clipping. You will have to watch it through the entire piece of music to check and see if it clips. Just for reference, with 16bit audio the VU meters start at -96dB at the bottom and go all the way up to +3dB in most cases. When at 24bit it starts at -144dB and goes to +3dB as well.
Since nothing can exist above 0dB, whether it be on an ipod or the state of the art software used in a million dollar studio, compression and limiting are used to bring up the audio levels without going over 0dB. Thats a whole other ball game though. It has the potential to ruin a recording even more than digital clipping because it affects the dynamics of the music.

I've replaced strings on my other guitar plenty of times but that's an acoustic, but the time has finally come to replace a string on Zero, my strat. Anyone feel like helping? I haven't got a clue past taking off the white plate at the back and don't wanna screw anything up...
mel_bound
09-10-2006, 09:12 PM
Zero's a squier strat right? You shoudn't have to unscrew the white plate thingy, you just need to loosen the strings and slip them out through the 6 holes next to the white plate, and then to re-string it, you just need to slide them back though and up to the machine heads and tighten them and stuff. Or if you wanna watch how to do it your local music shop should be able to do it for you for a small fee... unless you bought the guitar from my local shop who have a free lifetime labour deal :D
AlinaPOW
09-10-2006, 09:15 PM
That's a pretty sweet deal! I haven't had to get my bass restrung in over a year, just aswell too, last time i did it cost $50. I hate how much bass strings cost!
Oooooh god. I'm confused. *sigh* guess i'll just have to bite the bullet and take Zero to a shop. He has new stickers now :)
You've got a strat don't you Mel? Maybe i should just trek to Bayswater and get you to show me :P
mel_bound
09-10-2006, 09:19 PM
yes I do have a strat, it's a piece of crap :p
wait a minute, sorry, the 6 holes are in the white plate, but you don't have to unscrew the plate, you just have to loosen the strings and they should just slide out :)
Julia
09-10-2006, 09:22 PM
Haha, I know a bass player who has had the same strings for 8 years, and he still maintains that they don't need changing. Changing strings on a Strat is easy as pie, as Mel said, just shove them through the six holes on the back and the rest will be pretty self explanatory. :)
Kevin
09-10-2006, 09:39 PM
changing strings on a strat is easy, unless it's a string broken near the bridge, where the little ring is wedged into one of the holes, then it's a bitch to get the thing out.

Kevin
09-11-2006, 10:14 PM
it was my gretsch electromatic, with adobe audition, through my h&k 100w amp, then through a really shitty microphone i got cause some primary school was throwing it out, and a eurorack mx802a mixer, which is probably 20 years old
this should probably go in that equipment thread
i'll try and record it again tomorrow, cause after playing that stuff over and over again my fingers start to get tired and sore.

hughes and ketner?
why did it sound sooo tiny.
oi are the electromatics any good?
Kevin
09-11-2006, 10:59 PM
the electromatics are alright, if i knew i could get some better second hand gretsches for $500-$1000 more i might have, but i don't need a real expensive electric cause i hardly ever use it.
it sounds tinny cause of using a shitty mic and the pc sound card would probably have an effect, but i think it's mainly the mic. unless you meant tiny, in that i had the volume down low.
what i was playing sounded alright coming out of the amp, but then listening to the recording and it's just crap.
any suggestions on a decent mic anyone?
Sammas
09-11-2006, 11:07 PM
SM-57 is cheap and pretty much the staple for mic'ing guitar amps on stage and in the studio. Mic position is everything. Closer to the center of the speaker cone the brighter it will be. If you have a mic with a directional pickup pattern (like an SM-57 which is has a cardio pickup pattern) it will also suffer from proximity effect. This means the closer the mic is to the sound source, the more pronouced the low frequencies will be. Angling the mic will reduce the proximity effect.
Kevin
09-11-2006, 11:10 PM
cool, i've heard of those before, i'll look into getting one.

WHITE FALCON

man i used a kareoke mic for the recording i did for the voice in mine. how much do SM57 retail at. SM58 are the best for vocal, SM57 are best for micing up amps and micing up acoustics and stuff. sorry to repeat lol
Sammas
09-11-2006, 11:28 PM
cool, i've heard of those before, i'll look into getting one.

It won't be the best, but it certianly isn't the worst. A lot of early motown recordings were down exclusively with 545's (SM-57 predecessor) and they are some of the best sounding recordings ever made.
It depends how much you want to spend, though. A Condenser would be a more flexible micophone if you only intend on buying one. Something like a Studio Projects B1 or B3 maybe. If you budget it more it only gets better from here, though.
WHITE FALCON
09-11-2006, 11:41 PM

Kevin
09-11-2006, 11:44 PM
sm57 is looking like around $200, there's a few on ebay for around $150, i'll check at work on saturday if i can order one in and how cheap it would be.
Sammas
09-12-2006, 12:05 AM
At allans you are looking at just under $160 for a 57 & $200 for a 58. Any more than that and you are getting ripped off.
A 58 is essentially a 57 with a pop shield. Unless you actually are using it for stage work you may as well get a 57 and improvise a pop shield... like by squeezing a coat hanger into a stocking leg and sing through that.
