you already know I exsist, hmm maybe we can keep two threads going and out do them other musicians? Maybe one can be where we talk about gear, different styles of drumming and our favourite drummers etc. and the other can be for introductions or something? haha I don't know :p

I hates me some small toms, fuckin' piss me off with their little high pitch thud. I like a real low thud from my toms. Now you shall all marvel at my lack of knowledge with the technical side of drums.
I love the sound of 14x5 aluminium snares. I have one and it sounds amazing when it's in tune *drools*.

to be honest the kit I have now I don't even know the size of my snare bahaha, it's a cheap fuckin' kit though. My old kit had a real purdy old gretsch bass drum with wood rims and stuff. It was nice and deep too so it sounded purdy

I'm a drummer, but you wouldn't catch me knowing what the hell the measurements are on my toms and whatnot. I bought my kit off eBay (Yep, little e, big B) - It's a ProMax (lol...) but it's good for now... I wanna get a TAMA Swingstar or an electronic kit for my next one, so I can move it around (if I go electronic - and I can do the Short Notice intro :p), and so I have a better sound if I go the Swingstar. Right now the snare's the only good sounding thing about it, but fair enough... I've tried tuning the toms and all that jazz but... nothin'.
Cymbals:
20" Ride
16" Crash
14" Hi-Hats
I guess everything else on my kit is stock, except I got a replacement beater for the bass pedal, since the other one SNAPPED OFF WHILE I WAS DRUMMING. It just cracked and flew into my shin... the one I have now's really good, but I still reckon the kit's dodgy.

nothing wrong with cheap kits man as long as you like the sound. Also I will never ever buy an electric kit I hate them things! haha, my kit is really cheap I don't even know what fucking kind it is. But all the drum heads aren't bad and I have so-so cymbals (sabian B8's) so it sounds ok all together

You won't be disappointed, it's one of the best things if you ask me. I go crazy when I don't get to play much such as now, man it's ben ages stupid tiny apartment with no room for my drums
all the drummers i know are psychotic :p
fair enough - they feel the need to hit things constantly, repeatedly, quickly...
in saying all that i totally lub drummers in general and desperately want to get myself a kit so that i can have a bash but alas, i don't think it's going to happen! :(

yeah lets see the pics, I'd post some of mine but umm it's really nothing fancy at all. plus I only have a few photos of me playing them which don't show you the kit hah. I need to get some drum head deadeners and cymbal deadeners so i can play in the apartment or something. Fuck i miss my kit! I'm supposed to be recording a few cover songs with some friends of mine at their home studio just for the hell of it. That'd be fun

how do you folks feel about double bass pedals? I don't like 'em, most things that can be done with them that sound good i think can be done with a single pedal.

Whoops, I posted in the other thread ages ago but this appears to be the main one now...
I'm a drummer... have been since about May last year. Like playing TLE stuff, 'specially Roll On material. It's fun to play.
how do you folks feel about double bass pedals? I don't like 'em, most things that can be done with them that sound good i think can be done with a single pedal.
I'm a bit of a metal head, so of course I like double kicks :p and I prefer them over a single pedal when playing metal because my leg starts to get sore after a couple of songs hehe I'm too weak. I don't currently own a pair but Grumma said he'd send his current one over my way when he gets his new ones... ha

I listen to very little music with a double kick. Mostly I hate hearing it but the motorhead album sacrifice is pretty dang good and there's double kick in that. I just hate the way it sounds for the most part. I understand liking metal might make someone feel different though heh

09-18-2006, 12:49 PM
just out of curisoity what aspects of drumming do you guys feel you personally need to work on? For me it's my snare work although I've gotten wayy better in the past year or two beacuse I actually did more snare work with my last band. The old punk band aside from rolls I didn't do much haha.
my brother wants to learn how to Drum - i think he's been listening to too much beatles and has a bit of a man crush on Ringo (that plus he's still a bit of a thomas the tank engine fan - as am i, i must admit!)
what's a good price to pay for a starter kit and what are the absolute necessities?
*M!
graverobbin'bastard
09-18-2006, 01:00 PM
I can't help you much with price cause the canadian dollar is different but as far as the kit goes. I find a pretty standard kit would have a bass drum obviously snare, floor tom, two toms. For cymbals a hihat and ride and one crash would be pretty basic or if you really wanna start out basic a crash/ride you can use as both doesn't sound the greatest but no big deal.
graverobbin'bastard
09-18-2006, 01:01 PM
is he pretty young? You might even be able to find a small kit for him that would be cheaper
he's about to turn 12...
he's about as tall as i am... not that this means much (i'm a little tacker - 5'1") but yeah...
i don't know...
thanks for the ideas - i shall have a scout around...

he'd probably need a full size kit then I'd reckon. Just look in the paper for a used kit that's what I do! I've saved hundreds of dollars that way cause I'm a poor bastard hah

My favourite drummers include:
Danny Carey (TOOL)
Brad Wilk (RAGM/Audioslave)
Travis Smith (Trivium)
Thomas Haake (Meshuggah)
Paul Bostaph (Slayer on God Hates Us All)
Nicko McBrain (Iron Maiden)
John Bonham (Led Zeppelin)
Dave Mackintosh (DragonForce)
this is the lamest thing I could possibly ask but I wanna know how you oflk spin the sticks in your hand if you do hahahaha. I just wanna learn some flashy shit People say I do it weirdly haha everyone I know who does it, does it between their middle fingers going backwards but I do it between my pointer and middle fingers going forwards if that makes sense. T3 |----oo------oooo|----o-----oo----|----oo----o-----o-

Andy's snare at the '03 BDO, I'd assume it's a pearl 14"x6.5" but it's not a brass sensitone that things say he uses.. I just love the tone of it and I'd love to know...
WHAT IS IT?!

He does too.
Watch the live clip of All Torn Down and Prisoner Of Society on the FHOI DVD.
Theres also a couple of songs on State of Emergency where he uses them.
And also; to whichever idiot said they dont want Andy turning into a Death Metal drummer; the first musicians to use 2 bass drums were jazz musicians
Ginger Baker from Cream had a double bass drum on their 2005 DVD. And Ginger Baker is about the best drummer. Ever. No contest.

Revivin the thread even more with some clips of my favourites:
Travis Smith (Trivium)
- Live drum solo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PqvuY-SC8ko)
- film clip for "Pull Harder on the Strings of Your Martyr" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Anesii5GecE) (awsome double beat thing he's got goin with 4/4 on the hi and snare then toms on top of that) And yes he plays it live as well
Tim Yeung
- worlds fastet drummer contest (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMOj9tHdhhY)
Nicholas Barker
- the fat man can drum
(and fast) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49leneiYd_Q)
Mike Smith
- the innovator of blasting (also gotta love the reference to SOAD at the end) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2PATEO4Uomk)
- 25 second clip of a breakdown (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1GkK4O0_OL8)
As you can probably tell Im a sucker for fast playing. That's not to say that I dont also like complex playing (eg Danny Carey of Tool, Thomas Haake of Meshuggah) but man I just love the sound of double kicking ^_^
Hmm speaking of Haake:

Gah and how could I forget THIS (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cRuTcnd8YLU)

He kills Bonham. THERE I SAID IT
Grumma
12-21-2006, 02:43 PM
Yeah I watched the first 6 minutes.
I didnt think it was much better (if at all) than Moby Dick
It kills Moby Dick. Because your a speed-whore, watch the one from their farewell tour (its on the sidebar), because that was 30 odd years ago, when he was a lot faster. Poor guy has arthritis now. He plays melodies with his tom's. Bonham just sounded like a mess.
Grumma
12-21-2006, 02:50 PM
I didnt think Bonham sounded like a mess
The recorded version of when they first did it does. Its Bonham aimlessly hitting any drum whenever he feels like without any purpose. That made me not like Moby Dick that much at all. The video you supplied is slightly better, but it still didn't feel like the epic solo people always make it out to be.
But when I heard Toad, it was as if every image of a drum solo I had fit into what Ginger was doing. And when he goes into the jazz beat, its about the best thing ever.
Well, except for this (http://youtube.com/watch?v=xRfQoeU938w) one

Aghh Cream! Reminds me of the weekend, when we listened to Cream for about an hour straight next to the pool.
only an hour? :(
If that hour didn't consist of "Sweet Wine", "N.S.U" or "Politician" you fail even more.
Marv From NZ
12-21-2006, 04:06 PM
Yeah only an hour because during the hour we began to consume large amounts of liquor, so by the end of that hour we became more "AGRESSIVE" minded and thus' came to the conclusion that we needed to listen to AC/DC and U2 for the rest of the party.
U2 is more aggressive than Cream? Oh lordy.
Good choice on the AC/DC though.
I would have also done Bon Jovi for the sheer delight in singing him drunk.
Marv From NZ
12-21-2006, 04:25 PM
Oh yeah we put on Bon Jovi aswell. But who doesn't put on Bon Jovi at a party really? Just put party in a sentence and you know Bon Jovi was played. It's stock.
I dunno if U2 is more agressive but lol we had to put it on because it started to fuck us off knowing that 9 people at the party went to the U2 concert last month.

Grumma
12-28-2006, 01:23 PM
It's mainly the quality of the bracings (judging by what it says)
The more expensive one has a throne (the other one doesnt)
But yeah I think the main difference is in the quality of the cymbal stands . . . and probably the hardware in general eg it doesnt tell you what type of bass pedal you get with the cheaper one (suggesting it would be as good)
mel_bound
12-28-2006, 06:56 PM
OK, thanks. I read that it would be better to invest in a good throne and take really good care of it rather than have a crappy one.
Which would you say is better to get?
I'd go for the second one with sabian cymbals, except I'd try and swap the wood snare for the steel, because that is my favourite size and sounding snare hehe :D

Here is a good and cheap way of sound proofing a room/garage/whatever. Save up as many egg cartons as you can. Beg from restaurant owners, steal from friends, do whatever you can do to get as many egg cartons as possible, then stick 'em to the walls! make sure there is as little amount of gaps as possible so the sound dosn't leak... then you can play as loud as you want and people outside would hardly hear a thing. we did that to my friends shed ;)

You're science teacher said it would work? Tell her to go back to school, because egg cartons don't and never will soundproof a room. There is only a few ways to effectively soundproof a room - density, dead air space or putting the room in a vacuum. Since the latter is impossible we'll go on to the first two. Density is pretty straight forward, a room made out of timber isn't going to be as soundproof as a room made out of brick. Professional studios use varying densities layered to form the wall, the changes in density aids in trapping the wide range of frequencies of sound.
eg: 3 layers of gyprock then 4inches of acoustic fiberglass insulation, then 3 more layers of gyprock, then a single brick wall, then a cinderblock wall.
Dead airspace refers to a room within a room. Building a room inside another room with airspace between. This airspace is sealed so air cannot get in or out. Professional studios use both of these, there will be dead airspace between the inner gyprock layer and the brickwall, then more dead airspace between the brickwall and cinderblock wall for example. Because of the large amount of materials, soundproofing is expensive.

The best drummer i've ever played with used a minimal kit, yet made more sounds with it than most drummers could get out of a kit twice the size. I dunno, I've always been a fan of the train of thought that having limited options (as far as instruments go) forces you to better utilize those instruments. After all, a drumkit's sound isn't just the bunch of drums and some cymbals, its anything that can make a sound.

*shrugs* just because you don't want to believe it doesn't mean its not true. You Dad's friend didn't use egg cartons and foam to soundproof the room, he used them for acoustic treatment. Go ahead, ask him. Biiiig difference. Acoustic treatment balances the sound within the room to prevent constructive and deconstructive nodes. It doesn't prevent or reduce the bleed of sound out of the room into the rest of the world. Even as acoustic treatment, egg cartons and foam are mediocre at best. They only control (and remove) a fraction of the high end, when in most situations its the low end causing the problems.
To address that last sentence, sure i'll take a trip to your shred. I'll even bring my textbook that addresses the placebo effect. ;)

Haha they are funny.
Anyway, We just had a new next door neighbour move in and now i'm not aloud to play drums while he is home. How gay! the old lady who used to live there, used to let me play all day and comment me on how it was improving and stuff. how sad.
Although I think I gave the lady a heart attack once when I moved my kit fron the garage to my room anmd started playing, because her room is right next to mine (our houses are joined together, like a villa) but she is old and I guess she needs full time care now.
I think when i pickup my new computer, I'll move to the garage again and record stuff. yay

He can't legally stop you from playing though can he?
The curfew for loud noises is around 10pm so I don't see how he could stop you from playing whenever you feel like it (before 10)

Yeah you should be right so long as it's below a certain decibel level (which is pretty high)

Yeah but my mum doesn't want him to complain cause she thinks they will kick us out of our house
Meh, I'll move it to the garage today. Him and whoever else is in there talk so fricken loud anyway they probably wont hear me playing hahaha

Unless you are part of a strata, like most villa's and townhouses are. They can do terrible things to you if you don't follow their rules including fines, or eviction if you are renting.

Heh this reminds me of my next door neighbour who has been hearing me playing guitar. He found his old guitar and asked me for a chord chart. Apparently I inspired him to get playing again :p

Stairway To Heaven (http://media.putfile.com/Drums-StairwayToHeaven)
Youth Of The Nation (http://media.putfile.com/Drums-YouthOfTheNation)
One
(http://media.putfile.com/Drums-One)
Wake Up + Iris (I'll fix it up later)
I stuffed up a few times in the last one (WakeUp+Iris), and also in One I didn't play it very well either

Why would you need to use double kicks in the intro for POS?
Andy uses doubles in WOYR though...figured it out for myself. :) WOYR intro is a damn easy and fun sounding drum part to play on....drums.
When does he use the doubles?
This is done with singles so it is possible:

And a comparison of POS with a single and with a double (though i played the doubles too fast)

Im pretty sure WOYR is a single pedal...
Grumma
03-27-2007, 10:29 PM
Yeah it doesn't sound like it would need a double pedal to be played.
It's just a few double "da dums" followed by a constant "dum" at only a medium tempo
hey Grumma, I can't listen to those recordings you did. they aren't loading for me... bummer
dont worry, I fixed it! now I have to wait for them to load
wow for the first time in my life I actually out smarted a computer :o
Grumma
03-27-2007, 11:11 PM
Well the links definitely work cos when I click em they start loading . . .
dunno . . .
I wouldnt say any of em were my best work; I dropped my left stick near the end of Stairway, bass drum was all over the place in the bridge of Youth and One . . . well . . . just was sloppy to say the least.
I'll have another crack at it tomorrow cos I gotta record some stuff for a mate anyway (which I might as well post here)
*edit* haha awsome.
If not here's my putfiel home page
http://www.putfile.com/grummski
haha wicked. You sound a bit off in One! I expected it to heaps better :p just kidding. nah it has only loaded like the first 20 seconds
Grumma
03-27-2007, 11:34 PM
lol a bit off?
It was woeful :p
Apart from when I was first learning it that's probably the worst I've ever played it tbh
I am jealous of your double kicking-ness. I really want a pair now :D but I can only afford really cheap ones. dammit.
you recording quality sounds pretty good, maybe it should've been turned down a bit so it doesnt sound all crap on the highs.
Grumma
03-27-2007, 11:43 PM
Aighty I'll keep that in mind.
There's awsome double kicks at the end of Stairway :p
awesome, i'll listen to that next. one has only loaded 50% so far.
also would it be alright if I used your file so i can record guitar and shit over the top of it?
Grumma
03-27-2007, 11:49 PM
Yeah knock yourself out.
If you want One I'll re-do it tomorrow a couple of times till I actually do a decent job :p
sweet :)
'cos I've always wanted to record One, but a) I cant do the double kicks on a single pedal and b) my microphone sucks anyway and doesn't pick up the bass drum very well either.
Oh and I'm going to use youth of the nation too! I haven't played that song in ages!! I need to re-program my effects unit for the guitar again, i had it so perfect once it sounded rad!!!!
