View Full Version : The "Current Affairs" Thread
So on the last "official" forums there was a bit of talk that there was too much crap being spoken and not enough actual discussions taking place.
What have you heard on the news lately that's interesting to you?

Apparently some university study in Queensland found that for the first time in history, comics were searched for more often than porn on google.

Yeah but you know Americans, they lead the way with everything except anything to do with sex. They still prefer to think that people don't do that. Ever. At least not until they're married.

I married a donkey, but i'm sleeping with the dog.
It's expected that Tony Blair will be resigning within a year, and hopefully Gordon Brown won't replace him. I think it's time for a new party to come into office. And not a loud-rowdy-drinking-sexing-one.

I voted in the state election today.
I hate the idea that you're allowed to 'just vote one'. Its stupid! THERES A REASON .WHY . THERES PREFERENTIAL .VOTING STUPID!
i had to do some advertising for our last local election and the councillors took me through all the ins and outs of the preferences system etc - it's really stupid...
in other news - i hate that some morons have been cutting the tails and stingers off Sting Rays... that's just plain wrong...
i wonder if they realise by killing and mutilating those animals they're not going to be doing anyone any favours AND they're not going to bring back crock hunter - dumb!

And they're going against what Steve was standing for.
yes - that makes it even worse i suppose...
silly silly silly
i just don't understand the mindset behind it!
*shakes head*
perhaps it's like when my brother stubs his toe on something and then goes back and hits it to make himself feel better but then ends up hurting his hand on said inanimate object...

Naomi Robson is being detained in Indonesia, after her and her film crew listed themselves as "tourists", while entering the country with all their film stuff. Personally, Indonesia can keep her and her severe Botox.

So on the news tonight they were trying to blame the montreal shooting partially on movies and video games. That shit pisses me off! It doesn't matter what you watch or play if you're fucked in the head and wanna kill you're fucked in the head and wanna kill! I watch soo much violent and disgusting shit and play violent video games and I wouldn't even get in a fight fuckin' crap. Right I feel better now

that's why they're putting out the padded bras...
:P
this subject always makes my blood boil!
i was brought up wearing corduroy pants and home knitted jumpers OR pretty dresses with smocking...
ie - the good old days!
*M!
i wore knitted jumpers and cardigans and was mum 'lil girl....she doesn't have any other girls, so meh!
that's why they're putting out the padded bras...
:P
hahaha!! i walked straight into that one!
haha - i was an only child for 11.5 years...
then all of a sudden there was a baby... so yeah - i have a little brother... he's not so little anymore!
thankfully he's not into padded bras - 'cause that would be a little weird...
but little kids are acting a lot older now days - i don't know what's up with that!
*M!
i was an only child for 2 or so years :(
i don't know whats with the growing up fast thing, its scary.
In one of our class discussions last week (we have "current affair" discussions every Friday, which gave me the idea for this thread) we spoke about how young girls are often told that they'll grow up to be mothers, that's why baby borns and dolls are so popular. It's sad that little kids are growing up so fast these days.

This isn't relevant to padded bras or Baby Borns, but I thought what this person had to say on the death of Steve Irwin is pretty much exactly how I feel

The whole nature-nurture debate. I believe that although games and movies etc. can influence somebody, put ideas in place and introduce the subject of violence, if that child has had a good upbringing and knows what is moral and immoral, then they are unlikely to act on it.
Sure GTA might make kids think, 'yeah it'd be fun to nick a car and drive erratically across the city with much violence invovled'. But if these children have been taught right from wrong, they'll know that it's wrong to steal, driving erratically can cause accidents and violence is bad. I'm learning about conscience and where it comes from in ethics at the moment, it's pretty interesting.

yeah I get that I just think if someone is going out killing and shooting they're fucked to begin with the games or whatever wouldn't push them to do so IMO.

Also I agree with that article about Steve Irwin. I hate how the media treats things. Also I really think steve irwin did a lot of good for animals in general. I really like the guy for that. People take him as a joke alot over here but I think they don't get it. I just tihnk he was passionate about the animals. Plus he really knew alot about them and genuinly cared

My boyfriends a journo and works at the newspaper and when I showed him that he was in 100% agreement. He loved Steve Irwin and was really upset/pissed off at how the media and newspapers were turning it around, but being a cadet, you have no say in anything. :(

Al-Qaida leader Osama Bin Laden is rumoured to have died of a typhoid infection, according to a French newspaper.
The unsubstantiated report from the L'Est Republicain newspaper quotes a document which it claims has been classified by the DGSE, the French intelligence service, and circulated to France's top leaders including president Jacques Chirac and prime minister Dominque de Villepin.
The report from the DGSE says that Saudi Arabian intelligence is "convinced" that Bin Laden perished in Pakistan earlier this year.
"The information gathered by the Saudis indicates that the head of al-Qaida was a victim while he was in Pakistan on August 23rd 2006, of a very serious case of typhoid which led to a partial paralysis of his internal organs," the document claims.
The newspaper said another part of the document claimed that the Saudis were waiting for confirmation of the reports before making them public.
Bin Laden, the world's most wanted terrorist, has been pursued by the US since masterminding the 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon, whose fifth anniversary passed by earlier this month.
The failure of coalition forces to catch him have proved a continual source of embarrassment for the US military since 9/11. It is believed the former construction magnate has been hiding in the rugged mountainous terrain on the Pakistan-Afghanistan border since the 2001 attacks.
wtf how is this too short?

Well I imagine people will not believe it no matter how much evidence there is, unless they see a body
Aaron

If it hasn't happened, that means the report is a trick. Osama wouldn't have much to gain by pretending to be dead (especially by typhoid), since he seems happy enough to taunt the US with his liveness. If it's propaganda from the US, then you can expect a new audio/video tape featuring Osama to turn up within a few weeks.
