There are no double bass threads on a living end forum, which is just fucking wrong.
Who here plays double bass? How long have yall been doing it for? Are you doing slap or just normal?
And which TLE song is ur fave to play?

Bec

I do! I've only been playing for a few months, and I play pizzicato and slap.
I haven't got my own bass yet, saving up for one, probably a Slap King but I'll look into it more once I'm closer to the amount of money I need, so if anyone has any reccomendations let me know. :)
Oh and I'm hiring a bass at the moment.
And I dunno what my favourite TLE song to play is, I'll get back to you on that one.

Read About It is fun! I love DB, but rarely play as my wrists are screwy. But I do when I can! :D

Shit! A real king-double bass slap king?! Those are the fuck expensive ones arnt they?

Bec
11-16-2006, 06:24 PM
Nah, they're the cheapest of all the king double basses.
I think with pickups, adjustable bridge and a case it works out at about $3700 Australian.
Without any add ons it's $2000 American.

Wouldn't your custom bass be a hell of a lot more expensive?

Muscle memory, or guessing. Same kinda thing with a trombone slide. You just have to know!

Bec
11-16-2006, 07:39 PM
It's like with guitar or bass guitar, you don't have to look down and count the frets for every note, you just know where they are.

What's wrong with just listening to Scott play Second Solution?

Might just want to hear it in raw bass form, without pounding drums and screaming White Falcons.

Bec! We imprssed - carry on!!
Are you watched double-bass video school of Lee Rocker? We think it's very helpfull. Wish you some day to get your own King Double bass!!
We love double bass slap, and can say that the fastest double-bassist ever worldwide is Dyma Ilyin from early Meantraitors (their 2 first albums The Meantraitors from psychobilly land and Titanic music).

Bec

Thanks! Hopefully I'll be able to get it by late next year, maybe sooner if I manage to get a job.
I haven't got Lee Rocker's video but I've heard it's very good.
I've been using some videos I found on youtube (link (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tW-PRrgcb2s)). There's a whole series of them and I found them really helpful :)
I haven't heard of the Meantraitors before but I'll check them out!

It sounds awesome. But The bass hurts your fingers after doing the slap for like 2 seconds? And I do it with a regular bass. BTW. heres a tip. Put your own frets on with pieces of paper & glue. Theres a way to make things easier.

Bec
11-24-2006, 11:11 AM
Yeah it hurts but if you do a little bit at a time over a long period of time you'll develop calluses and it won't hurt as much. And you could make your own frets but it's not really that hard to find the notes, you get used to where they are.

Bec, do you know an old psychobilly band from Finland - Francine? Their leader Pete - double-bass palyer use a thickest metal strings. He told us it's always better to learn play with metal stings for better sound - it's hard but it's best school.
Francine is a very nice band, Pete is our friend and he is also a TLE fan ;)

Bec
11-24-2006, 05:51 PM
No I don't know them but I'll go check them out too :)
The strings I have on my hired bass are steel, I'm not sure how thick they are though. I haven't tried any other strings so I don't really have anything to compare them to.
Captain Reckless from Zombie Ghost Train recommended Hillbilly Slap Strings which are nylon with a kevlar core but I might stick to steels, not sure yet.

It's like with any instrument. After you play it for so long you just learn where all the notes and semitones (frets) are. It doesn't take long, so just persist. Its like the guitar, except you have frets on a guitar to tel you where the semitones occur. And it was the sam when i started learning the violin, i didn't know where to put my fingers, but then you develop it as you learn more about your instrument and how to play it.

the bass is probably the easiest to pick up. But not the easiest to play. Plus most songs to day are so easy.

KillingInTheNameOf
11-26-2006, 10:37 AM
Hmm I'd argue that drums would probably fall under easiest to pick up

Learning the basic stuff is VERY simple, but to be good at drums IMO is harder than being good at guitar or bass

Evil Chris
11-26-2006, 10:47 AM
its all on timing. but guitars are a pain in the ass. you have to change chords on the exact right time and make it perfect. If not, you screwed it up

Bec
11-26-2006, 12:08 PM
I guess it depends on each person and what they find easier.
Personally I find drumming pretty hard. I have awful co-ordination.

The flute is the hardest instrument i've ever tried playing, couldn't even get a sound out of it. violin is the 2nd hardest.

but anyway, back on topic. How do you play triplets when you're slapping double bass?

Bec
11-26-2006, 03:24 PM
I used to learn flute a while ago, found it pretty easy

About triplets, I don't really know how to explain it but I found these really helpful:

Part 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tW-PRrgcb2s&mode=related&search=)
Part 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPOmNIjwDUU&mode=related&search=)
Part 3 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U0mqn0MF8EM&mode=related&search=)
Part 4 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4KUeBzKNNLo&mode=related&search=)
Part 5 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cECx64lC-hk&mode=related&search=)

Part 3, 4 and 5 are about different types of triplets

I decided to do some researching about what double bass to buy when I get enough money and I was thinking about getting an Engelhardt ES1 or ES9 mainly because I read good stuff about it and the thin neck. I have really small hands so I thought the thin neck might make it a lot easier for me to play, but I could be completely wrong.
Anyway I was wondering if anybody knows anything about them and has any advice as to whether they think I should get it or not? Also if anybody knows a shop around melbourne that stocks one that'd be great as I'd love to try one out before I buy it.
Thanks!

I play bass but not double bass, I'll be interested in buying a double bass at some point though. They are pretty similar to hollowbody guitars in that, they don't do a lot different to a regular bass, but they look about 100 times cooler.

The sound you can get from a double bass is orgasmic! absolutely amazing. Heaps different to an electric bass, even an acoustic bass doesn't sound anywhere near as awesome as a double.

Grumma

If it weren't for Cliff Burton I'd agree

Such wisdom. Lol.

Makes sense.

It's easier for a guitarist to go play violin then it would be for say a drummer to go play violin.

Tis known as a learning set ;)

Neo
03-30-2007, 10:19 PM
nah, i reckon a drummer could pick up violin quicker than a guitar player, cos its harder to put your fingers in place as on guitar they are spread further apart, and the tuning is backwards and very confusing. you'd have to delete you guitar habits to play voilin I reckon.

a banjo on the other hand, would make sense in what you're saying.

Sorry guys. I'm going to disagree with you all.

I own a solidbody guitar, and hollowbody and accoustic and they all are very similar, except for a higher action on accoustic.

Electric bass and upright bass are quite similar, except plucking a double bass is a bit harder than electric bass.

That's my opinion, anyway.

My only piece of advice is that it might work out better for you to sell your squier if you don't use it and with that money go buy a double bass pickup that's designed for the style you play

They are similar in some aspects but I'd say they're pretty different overall.
For a start, with double basses you can also use a bow. I've never tried using a bow on a bass guitar but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't work too well.
The slapping techniques on double bass and bass guitar are very different and get an entirely different sound.
And just the sounds of plucking a bass or double bass are quite different, especially if you use a pick on the bass guitar.

tainted_love
03-30-2007, 11:15 PM
You can use a bow on a guitar too. Doesn't sound that good but plenty of bands do it.

Moral of the story: That hardly counts as a difference.

Bec
03-30-2007, 11:25 PM
You can use a bow but it doesn't have anywhere near the same sound as a double bass does.

mel_bound
03-30-2007, 11:30 PM
Double Basses and guitars (including bass guitars) are completely different!
The double bass is much much older, and is part of the voilin family. It is an acoustic instrument, and originally used in orchestras with a bow (usually) and it's usually tuned an octave below a bass guitar. It can also be played pizzicato like a cello, viola or violin, which it sits with in the orchestra setup.
The bass guitar originated in the 1940s/50s as a louder alternative to the double bass to keep up volumes with the guitar WHICH EVOLVED COMPLETELY INDEPENDENTLY OF THE DOUBLE BASS. It is more similar to an electric guitar than a double bass, the size, the pickups, the tuning and the way you play it (horizontally on your lap/with a strap, sometimes with a pick)
You aren't supposed to use a bow on a guitar or a bass guitar. So it DOES count as a difference. What a few experimetal bands do does not constitute the norm.

The double bass LOOKS different to a bass guitar. It PLAYS different to a bass guitar. It SOUNDS different to a bass guitar. It FEELS different, and is heavier and plenty of other differences anyone with common sense could suss out for themselves.

gaby2121
03-30-2007, 11:32 PM

try doing that on a electric!

i tried and failed!
so i woulnt recomend it!

Why must everyone read so much into this?

They've both got 4 strings (don't bother mentioning 6 string basses, they are gay.), a low bassy tone and it's not too difficult to play either.

Therefore they are similar.

Lets also mention that double basses are fretless, whereas most electric basses have frets.

However, in some settings, both instruments can be used and played interchangeably. Take Rockabilly for example. Maybe this is where people are getting confused, because the stuff you play on a double-bass in rockabilly can be played pretty much the same way on an electric bass, and vice versa.

Lies and slander. Refer to funk music.

If you don't think an electric bass can be used in Rock and Roll and Rockabilly in a similar way to a double bass, listen to Paul Mcartney's bass work with the Beatles.

Bec
03-31-2007, 07:27 PM
I know that they can be used in a similar way, I just didn't think you could produce the same slapping noise on a bass guitar that a lot of rockabilly double bass players do. I know you can slap on a bass guitar but it's a different technique with a different sound. If there is a way to produce the same noise I'd be interested to know how you do it though.

When I play rockabilly songs on my electric bass, I tilt the bass up a bit so I can pluck the strings up around the 14th fret. I can get a similar sound to a double bass by playing like that with all the tone knobs adjusted, but it's still obvious that it doesnt have that big double bass sound.

Bec
04-01-2007, 12:16 AM
Ah cool. I might try that some time :) I was meaning with the slapping though. I can't get the same satisfying click from a bass fretboard that you get with a double bass. Not that that's a huge issue for me cos I have a double bass which I prefer to play anyway.

when i was like umm 13 through to 16 I was playing in bands with this dude who was learning upright at the time. He's now gone onto being one of the most saught after upright players, not only is aust but the world!

Anyway we learnt its really simply worth investing in an actual double bass pickup. Like a K&K or simular......

For years he used homemade jobs which kinda did the trick... But the bass was hard to amplify. I remeber he at the time he was using a 500watt bass head and had to pretty much have it at least on 5 to get a decent stage level. Was carnage for speakers too.....

The day 'the band' invested in an actual double bass pickup it mad the biggest ever difference. Was absolutely worth it.

got my hands on a double bass recently:

http://members.iinet.net.au/~andrew357/new/dbass.jpg

I also got an idiots guide on how to play but there is one thing:

Can anyone provide me some advice or/tips on how to harden the fingertips on the left hand? After about 15minutes of playing, the constant finger changes on the fingerboard makes my fingers raw and numb.

So my lessons only go for 25minutes max which kinda annoys me.

Bec
07-02-2007, 01:30 AM
I haven't used an ampeg, I'm far too poor anddon't even have pickups but I've seen a lot of double bassists use them and they usually sound really good!

What type of bass is that Andrew?
The only way I know of to harden the fingertips is to keep practicing regularly, even if you only have time for a few minutes.
I've never had any problem with my left hand. I only get blisters on the right hand from slapping. Have you made sure with your teacher that you're using the correct technique?
Also there's a good forum on www.rockabillybass.com, you'll probably find more people who know what they're talking about there :) This thread seems to be deserted most of the time.

i just play six string so this is out of my territory... but some crazy guy on a bus did tell me that if you rub ur finger tips in metho and grind them with fine sand paper (for a crazy old booze hound he was rather specific!) you'll get killer callouses.

i'm not tough enough or cool enough to try this method but if anyone is then let me know!

yay my bands manager just order this sweet amp for me. we needed a bigger one so yay.
has anyone ever used this kind or something?

Ampeg are the way to go for bass amps. The Bass player in my band has a big ol ampeg quad combo type dealy and he uses a double bass with a mag pick up and a transducer under the neck and it sounds super duper sweet :)

The bassist from Runawya boys uses and Ampeg only a small difference...he has a B2R Head...very similar, every time I've heard it, it's always sounded great.
Ampegs are good.

So I got my upright bass pick up and it sounds like crap.

well not literally but I plug it in into the amp and it's just weird sounding.

any idea.
I tried the tones and if its to high up it feedbacks its weird HELP?!?!?

i don't know about upright bass in particular but what kind of pickup is it?

gaby2121
07-26-2007, 06:31 PM
I have made my conclusions on it.
the previous guy who own the upright sand the bridge to high so my pick up doesn't fit so I have to put a piece a piece of wood in between to hold it.

that seems to work alright but not to loud.

and maybe my ears just weird cuz I'm not use to hearing an upright on a amp.

but here is the link to the pickup brand.

for slap you cuold always use a tried and tested guitar method to stop your fingers tips rippin open put super glue on them till your callouses get super hard and when they do try not to get them too wet

I don't know how many double bassist there is on this thread but heres a question how do I keep the bridge from falling on me its happend like 3 times well twice because I would hit the bridge with the wall but today it just fell over when I was playing it and its glued so I don't know.

It shouldn't do that unless you bump it pretty solidly or you have heaps low tension which you can fix fairly easily..

Hi i was just lookin thru the forum and saw your question. so i registered haha
low tension strings and or a big bump to the bridge can cause that. but i found that the main cause for my bass was when i tuned it as i tighten the string it pulls the top of the bridge up. this is caused by the string gripping to hard on the bridge. your strings should sit in a gap hald the depth of the string, and also putting some graphite powder(pencil led crushed up) under the string in the string slot. this will help it slide and it wont pull up on the bridge.. hope this helps

got my hands on a double bass recently:

http://members.iinet.net.au/~andrew357/new/dbass.jpg

I also got an idiots guide on how to play but there is one thing:

Can anyone provide me some advice or/tips on how to harden the fingertips on the left hand? After about 15minutes of playing, the constant finger changes on the fingerboard makes my fingers raw and numb.

So my lessons only go for 25minutes max which kinda annoys me.

Keep playing. eventualy it will come good..but some strings are perticulaly harsh such as garbos... i have seen ppl tape there fingertips. worth a try... or a glove after u have played say 20 mins bare hand

I have one similar and i had the same problem. after experimentin with a tech from mumfords guitars we found the best thing to shim the slot with is not wood but some dense rubber. simmilar to car tyres. and also the jack plug bit that gets stuck between the a and d string should be pushed as far down towards the tailpeice as possible. those 2 things have nearly solved my feedback problems

found this in an archive of the modern ARTillery era tle website

Scott Owen

I use two Ampeg SVT 4 PRO amps. I have a passive magnetic pickup attached to my bass and also an acoustic piezo pickup mounted to the back of the fingerboard. The magnetic pickup amplifies the notes I play and comes out through two Ampeg 8x10 speaker cabinets. The piezo pickup amplifies the sound of my hand and the strings hitting the fingerboard when I slap and it comes through the two Ampeg 1x10 cabinets that have horns in them. My current bass is a Regin - made in Romania and a Mienel is my spare. They are fitted with wireless units mounted inside the body of the bass and have had a trapdoor cut into them for access. They have had extensive reinforcements made to them for strength.
