AdvertisementMotor racing champion Peter Brock has reportedly been killed in an accident in Western Australia.

A car competing in the Targa West rally crashed into a tree at Gidgegannup about 30 kilometres north-east of Perth about 12pm, a Western Australia police spokesman told smh.com.au.

The car was carrying two people and one had died in the crash, he said.

The major crash investigation unit was at the scene, he said. Ambulances were not called.

The spokesman could not confirm the driver was Mr Brock, although that is being broadcast on Sky News.

It's a sad month for Australia indeed. Things are seriously getting weird lately in general, kinda hard to explain. 2 Australian legends dead in the same week. There is something I find highly discomforting about these deaths and the feeling that the old saying bad luck comes in 3's that someone else could be next.

I've lost my hero.

I grew up, regarding him as God - we would see an ad on TV and be told to be quiet, God was on.

My eldest brother was named Brock, after him - we have a 'pool room' - much like The Castle, devoted to Peter Brock/Holden Merchandise.

I can't beleive it. I'm shattered. My dad and brother have both been crying, I've never heard them cry.

I just .. don't know what to say.

Julian

My brother had a VK Commodore with a Brocky grille - it got written off. He grew up wearing a minature version of one of Brocky's race suits - he'd run around the house wearing it.

The worst part was, I was playing at a wedding this afternoon, James sent me a message telling me a few minutes before we were due to start. I called my dad who was in tears, then had to play - everyone's like "You look pale, what's up?" I told them, quite simply, my childhood hero had died.
We played, while the bride and groom signed the register, an Italian piece, Con Te Partiro - in English, Time to Say Goodbye. It made me cry :(

I'm just shattered.

I had my photo taken with him at a Peter Brock Foundation charity day.

Showed him the photo a year or so later, he relived that day right there and then, gave us a good chatting to.

He even hopped off stage whilst the auction was going to have a chat to us for an hour or so.

Mate told me on the way to Carla's. Must say i was shocked at Steve's death...but wasn't much of a fan. I'll have to admit the tears welled up when i realised Brocky was gone. Absolute legend he was, to all his fans. The only person in the racing world that would even approach Peter's level of respect and time for fans is Craig Lowndes...and we all know that he converted to the dark side. :oP

I still can't believe it...i grew up with Mr Oh Five. The 1977 LX SL/R 5000 Torana is my DREAM car, and Brocky won so many races in that beast.

I really can't believe it...top bloke. Such a top bloke.

In my life there have been three major deaths this week. Each one closer to home than the last. What a week.

The first was Steve. It didn't affect me that much. He was an awesome enthusiastic human being and had a family and was loved by many, but I wasn't overly attached to him so it didn't hurt too much.

Second was Brocky. I couldn't believe it when mum ran out to me and told me to turn on the radio because a driver had died in a rally and she thought it was Brocky. I turned on the radio and I was dumbfounded. He was my hero throughout boyhood. Peter Perfect. King of the Mountain. I guess that really brought it home to me that everyone makes mistakes - it really can happen to anyone.

And finally this morning I received news that my brother's close friend (whom I was also quite familiar with) was killed last night. Run over on the freeway between Sydney and Newcastle. Coming home from a gig during a storm. There was a tree down on the road. They swerved around it but hit a car that for some reason was parked there without any lights on. Josh got out, to see if anyone in the other car was hurt. He was run down by another car. Two of his bandmates, whom I also know, were sitting in the car and saw the whole thing.

Fucked. Up.

R.I.P Brocky. A true legend who always had time for his fans. I remember when my brother took me to Sandown last year we had the priviledge of meeting Brocky, he signed some stuff for us and stood and chatted with us for ages.

Still can't really believe he's gone. Such a bloody tradegy that we've lost 3 great aussies in one week.

He has been my hero for as long as I can remember. A few years ago at the Supercars in Perth he was sitting under an umbrella in a chair for literally the whole day just signing autographs and was always such a nice guy and always willing for a photo. Such an amazing man and such a tragic loss.

I got to my hotel in melbourne around 3pm friday afternoon, turned on the tv and the first thing that went across the screen was his death, I said something in shock, I dont remember what.. my mum told me I went really white and said "that didnt say what I thought it said did it" I didnt reply, I just stood there, shocked with tears going down my face.

I was pretty big on racing when I was a kid, especially thanks to my older brother. My brother idolised Brocky and still does. When he still lived here, the house was covered in Brocky memorabilia. He even had 'Brock05' number plates which I can't remember if he ended up selling them or if they are still in storage. There was a signed poster of Brocky right next to the computer but I took it down only the other week.. my bro is moving up to Qld so I thought I'd give it to him before he goes up.

I'm still pretty shattered, and it really fucked up my weekend. I think its the biggest loss we've had to deal with since the loss of Paul Hester early last year, they always seemed part of the family, cos we were all big fans of the guys. We've lost a hero.

I got pretty blind friday night, cos I couldn't stop thinking about it. I managed to meet Brocky a number of years ago at the 50th anniversary of Holden, he signed my holden hat and many other things we had. People have been saying all weekend that he always had time for everyone no matter what situation he was in.

I haven't been able to get Brocky off my mind ever since I've heard the news.

Saturday night I went to rod laver arena for The Countdown Spectacular which was a really good night, but it started off with John Paul Young singing "Yesterdays Hero" it was just really bad timing and I lost it. Across from me there was a bunch of people in their Holden jackets, I'm unsure if that song hit them too.

Sunday I was ready for the Storm game, though I was in another state of mind majority of the time before the actual game. A Holden blimp was going around all day showing this:

http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/6403/5zf3.jpg

I walked away from the Storm march and just had my head down for a while. Sure it was sad about Irwin early last week but he didnt have any affect on me like Brocky has and did in my life.

Like I did friday arvo in my bulletin, I'll leave this as the final note..

..Mountain in the shadow of light, rain in the valley below
Well you can say you're peter, say you're paul
Don't put me up on your bedroom wall, call me the king of the mountain.

R.I.P. Brocky!

The Peter Brock Trophy will be awarded to the winners of next month's Bathurst 1000 as part of an emotional tribute to the legendary driver.

V8 Supercars Australia announced that the trophy would be on offer each year at the Bathurst 1000 in a mark of respect for the nine-time Mount Panorama conqueror.

"This is a great honour for our family and we deeply appreciate it," said Lewis Brock, the three-time touring car champion's brother.

The man known as the 'King of the Mountain' was killed when he lost control of his car and slammed into a gum tree on Friday while racing in the Targa West rally, north-east of Perth.

Barely 24 hours after ruling out re-naming the Bathurst 1000 after Brock, V8 Supercars Australia announced the 2006 endurance race would celebrate his life, culminating with the presentation of the Peter Brock Trophy to the 161-lap race winners.

"V8 Supercars Australia will dedicate the Bathurst 1000 to Peter Brock with the permanent trophy that all drivers will aspire to win and walk in the footsteps of the great man," V8 Supercars Australia chairman Tony Cochrane said.

It will be etched with the words Peter Brock Trophy and underscored with King of the Mountain.

"A designer is being commissioned to create the trophy for this year's event after which the inaugural winners' names will be inscribed."

The front row of the Bathurst 1000 starting grid this year will be left vacant in memory of Brock who still holds the record for the most pole positions at Mount Panorama - six.

All V8 Supercars at the event will also be sporting "05", Brock's racing number that was retired in 1997.

Cochrane said race day of the Bathurst 1000 on October 8 would celebrate Brock's life, starting with an "extensive tribute".

"We want to do what we feel is most appropriate and with the full support of Peter's family," Cochrane said.

"One of the things that we are very conscious of is that Peter would not have wanted any changes made to the format of the Great Race as first and foremost he was a fierce competitor.

"By naming the trophy we forever honour his name.

"I dare say that no one will ever match his record at Mount Panorama so there is no more fitting tribute than for the winners of the race to be afforded the honour."

Cochrane said a search was on for as many of the cars that Brock won the event in so they could be used in a "Champions Lap of Honour".

"It is hoped the cars will be driven by Peter Brock's son James, former co-drivers Brian Sampson, Jim Richards, Larry Perkins, John Harvey, David Parsons and Peter McLeod, based on their availability," Cochrane said.

Brock prodigies and current V8 Supercar heavyweights Mark Skaife and Craig Lowndes have also been invited to drive in the champions lap.

An address by V8 Supercars Australia chaplain Gary Coleman will then be followed by a minute's silence before recording artist Iva Davies performs "Heroes" to a montage of Brock footage.

The pre-race program will be completed by the national anthem before the 10am race start.

I think what they're doing is really really good - as sad as it will be.
I'm taking that day off work - there's no way I'd miss it.

Oh and Glenn and Luke? You didn't miss much on the tributes - it was more or less Grant Denyer and some other bird laughing and joking about all these memories of Peter Brock - that they weren't even there for.
"Oh remember this? HAHAHAHAHA"
"Oh and that! HAHAHAHAHA"
And Grant Denyer was constantly "I remember when I did this and I met him and I raced against him and I walked past him and I said hi and I did this" - it was about the presenters laughing and joking, not celebrating the life of him.
I expected it to be an hour of footage, with a few people here and there talking but it wasn't.
