Took me a while.....

If you know me you know i got alot of gear, and havent really had to chance to try everything with everything else at gigs.

Did a gig with my 59/60 6120 and my Marshall JTM-45 RI w/ Greenback loaded cabinet. Had both volumes on about 9 o clock. Wasnt too loud (i was playing in a covers band so you tend to keep volumes lowish in that situation).

My god....... Best and biggest clean sound ive gotten out of my gear ever.

Thought i'd share it with you's and also cos i havent started a topic here for a while hehe

ahhh awesome. what songs were you covering?

recordings would be awesome!

have you a JTM-45 and a 100W Plexi?

WHITE FALCON

well i have completely changed my mind about JTM-45's!

i played one today!

nice clean, when you try to get some overdrive out of it, it sounds sooo bad!

its a good amp if you have 3 other amps!

is the plexi the same?

what settings would you guys have your amps on for various styles?
im kind of a newbie at meddling with my amp.... i just fiddle around till it sounds cool

that's how every one learns.... i guess it depends what you like, I like quite a trebbly sound sometimes so I'm always using the front pickup on my guitar but otherwise on the amp I usually have the bass turned right up and the treble and mids somewhere around half way... that's where I usually start from anyway, I just fiddle with the sound from there- it's quite a bluesy tone. Gain is usuallly somewhere about half way depending on what I am playing it through, sometimes lower than that.

Daniel

yeah im looking for a FAT BIG blues tone ive put beefy ernie balls on my guitar
but are there certain settings that i should start at eg.. soft rock Treble 2 Bass 10 etc

Julian

Congrats mate!

I need a new amp desperatley but i'm out of cash cause of my new guitar. Honestly, i'm not one to fiddle with the sound alot. If I was still in a band I would care more but I don't

I could live with just a jtm45. I reckon the overdrive is better than the clean sound... not that the clean sound is bad, its quite good but the overdrive is pure rocknroll.

Angus Young uses jtm45's for recording, no effects or pedals, just the amp pushed into overdrive. Eric Clapton is infamous for using bluesbreakers (combo version of a jtm45 with a tremolo circuit) as well. Its rock and roll at its finest.

and keep doing it... practise makes perfect, as they say.

Asking for good settings is pointless. Not only do amplifier circuits vary greatly, but the pickup and guitar type effect the sound as well as the volume you play at and the room that you are in.

Keep using your ears. Compare it to the sounds on CD's if you want.

Did you try putting a jumper between the normal and bright channels? Its a pretty standard issue trick for 4 input marshalls. Once you do that you can balance the volume and tone using just the bright and normal volume controls. How would I eq it? well, if there was too much bass i'd turn the bass down :D

It might just not be your thing... A lot of AC/DC's stiff upper lip has jtm-45 sounds.

I've played a supersonic briefly. Sounded pretty good... I think its fenders attempt at making the prosonic what is should have been... The prosonic is probably my favourite fender amp, but they just didn't market it properly.

yeahh i did that.

man the supersonic was so incredible

check this out

you can get so many sounds!

its unreal!

is a JTM-45 a 45 watt version of a plexi and is a 1978X a 50 watt version?

whats the go there?

Fritz
12-03-2006, 11:06 PM
I always patch 4 input marshalls.

Didnt sound good past 5 ???? Man....... I guess you just cant handle it :p hehe

I cant get a bad sound with my JTM with any channel, volume with any of my gretsch's. Maybe you didnt have the 6120 sounding good (tone switch not in middle spot) ect.

WHITE FALCON
12-03-2006, 11:08 PM
on the 6120

i had the one on the left down and the one on the right middle. both tones were full. i think i had the bass tone to far up.

i didnt want to turn it past 5 coz it sounded so bad. it was just like a really loud bad sound.

The JTM-45 is only 30 watts. It is the first marshall amplifier. Its based on a Fender bassman just the same as a Mesa Boogie mk 1 is... kinda strange ay? three amps all based on the same design yet they all sound very different. The bassman design fender stole from the General Electric publication in the 1940's.

The 1987x and jtm-45 both sound distinctly marshall... the Jtm45 has a better clean and is a little raunchier in the midrange. The 1987 has a thicker overdrive and more gain on tap. It also lacks the spongey feeling of a valve rectifier.

If you really like the supersonic don't let anyone try and tell you otherwise. I thought you played a Mesa recto? do you still have it or are you replacing it?

WHITE FALCON

Nah, ill sell my mesa :p and try and buy the head spending as little "extra" money as i can, or maybe i wont have to. Then i already have a 1960A cab but i was thinking of gettin the fender 4x12. there are vintage 30's in it yeah? and im gonna get the black one. hopefully i'll get a a good price for my mesa.

oh yeah and also, yeah the jtm have ALOT of bass.

I find in every single marshall the bass pot does almost nothing, however its the opposite case with the jtms. Its pretty overkill with the bass over 2 o clock I find (well with my set up anyway)

ok i admit i knew but i didnt want to be like omg i wanna copy cheney. i just reckon they are a sick amp!

plus chris gets his main sound from the wizard/s doesnt he?

his normall set up for a gig is like the wizard on the 1960AX and the Matchless setup and a Plexi on a fender 4x12 isnt it. what has he taken out for the Supersonic!?

...having said that though I am S.H.Y.Te shyte with amps- making my hobby almost redundant. I know what's nice, what I like, and I know mostly what you are all on about... but it's a world of wires and connections I don't think I'm ever going to fully understand- what's a plexi?

Sammas
12-04-2006, 09:02 PM
Its a nickname given to early model marshalls that had plexiglass front panels (where the knobs are). In 1969 marshall changed from plexiglass to gold anodized aluminium for both the front and back panels.

It has been kind of generalized now to include any 50 or 100watt four input non-master volume marshall like the 1987x, 1959SLP, certian JMP's, etc... unless you come across a gear collector or vintage amp dealer, then an amp like a Marshall Super Lead is either a plexi or non-plexi referring to whether it has a plexiglass front panel or not.

WHITE FALCON

ahhh i see!

makes sense. still i question why and how you know all this :D

i know amps. exept i dont know inside them and how that works. guitars is not that hard =D cept when you start talking about the dynamics of the neck and all that jibberish i sort of lose it but i'de love to find out.

chris uses BX cabinets now. he prefers the sound of a straight cab. Same cabinet ive been using for a few months now. Its great!! Very different from the Orange cabinet i used for so many years, i wouldnt say either is better but both are 2 very different cabs.

Chris hasnt used a plexi for years. the marshall you guys are mentioning is a JTM-45 (the one chris used recently-ish). the supersonic replaced the JTM but im really sure it wont be long until something else replaces the supersonic. Before the JTM he used the dual professional. He uses these extra amps for his solo boosts. Main sound is a wizard

Why do I know? Because it interests me... How do I know? Because it interests me I read/play/do/talk about it. People tell me I have a very good memory, so i'm sure that helps.

thats exellent!

doesnt it bore you sometimes?

i suppose it wouldnt if you had heaps of questions and then that would just lead on to something else you could find out.

i aim to know as much as you so when im old like you :p i will know lots too :D

hahah im joking about the old part :p

Sammas
12-04-2006, 11:24 PM
yeah I think most of it is just the result of having questions and finding the answers. I only really get bored or annoyed when I don't have a clue about what is going on...

Usually in those situations there are just more questions... it never ends. :D

WHITE FALCON
12-04-2006, 11:38 PM

i love the technical side of stuff exept when i dont understand it. and when i dont understand it is when i ask questions :D
