How am I 'sposed to sneak in? I've never been to one of these overage shindigs, do they check id at the door?

Colezy

Sneak in via a back door, side window, with the band crew/roadies etc. Get creative!!

AlinaPOW
12-18-2006, 06:13 PM
I just asked 'em if they feel like sneaking in a stow-away. Failing that, I'm mates with some guys in local bands that are good mates of The Currency so that could possibly work?

Sarah
12-18-2006, 06:32 PM
It'd be easy as fuck to sneak in with the roadies/crew/band. But if you're not that brave I've found that if pubs do lunch, go in then with a bunch of slightly older friend have some food and just don't leave. And you don't have to pay either!!

Well I think I'd have more fun sneaking in with the said mates, but if they don't want to... that sounds like an awesome option! Only, I don't look like the most mature person in the world, like I really look my age, so what would be the odds of me getting caught out eventually?

Colezy

Who cares if you eventually got caught - atleast you got in!! :p It'll be something to tell the grandkids.

Only if you look under 18....which you are.

How am I 'sposed to sneak in? I've never been to one of these overage shindigs, do they check id at the door?

Maybe I shouldn't be saying this cos they might find out and crack down, but... Lu is 15, and walked straight into the Darren Hanlon show at the Norhtcote SC the week before xmas and no-one asked her for I.D - hell, no-one even looked twice. So maybe they're not so anal about it.

Area 7 at the Espy the other week on the other hand... Even tho the band wanted her to come in and see the set, there was no way she was going back in. (she had snuck in to see The Currency's set before I got there... mightn't have helped...whoops) Security/management were jerks.

Bec
01-08-2007, 08:40 PM
Does Lu look 15 or does she look older? Because I'm pretty sure I couldn't pass for 18 but if you think there's a chance we could get in I guess it's worth a try.
When they catch someone under 18 do they just throw them out or do they do anything more serious?

Outlaw Love Song
01-08-2007, 09:39 PM
Depends....I've seen underage people simply asked to leave a licensed venue. Others I've seen carted away by the cops in tears. Oh and lets not forget the massive fines you can cop for a) being in on a licensed premises and under 18 years and b) fines and prosecution for being in posession of fake IDs.

But don't let that stop you. Run the risk if you must.

Security are there to stop the underage people (with fake IDs or not) getting in becasue places have a license to sell alcohol. Now, I'm sure that sounds like a minor thing but they don't just hand licenses out to people willy nilly. If security don't do they're job and make sure people who aren't supposed to be there aren't sneaking and they are found out then that means, again, fines and prosecution. Propeitors of venues can be jailed for being in violation of their licenses.

Personally I suggest you all stop whinging and entertaining the idea of "sneaking in" and simply wait another couple of years til your old enough so you don't ruin it for everybody else.

Bec
01-08-2007, 09:45 PM
Thanks, you have a point, I accept that if I get caught it's my own fault but I don't wanna get security or the venue in trouble or anything.

Hopefully they'll play an underage show sometime soon and if not I guess 2 years isn't that long on a scale of life.

May
01-08-2007, 10:55 PM
Lu can look older than her 15 years.
But I guess it was in her favour too that I (her mum) was there with her, cos even if she had been 'sprung', under the law, as long as she's accompanied by a parent or guardian, she can technically be on the premises.
However, management have the right to set their own policies - as in the case of The Espy, where they dont allow minors in, even with a parent, after 8pm

But yeah, compared to when I grew up, there's a tonne of underage shows these days. Besides, the unders years dont last forever, even if they feel like they do... :p

Well, they formed in Los Angeles which technically makes 'em a US band.

Their lead singer is from Dublin, though.

And for the record....I was at that show last year.

AlinaPOW
01-19-2007, 03:47 PM

Aw rad, so Cam, care to go into more detail? Are they a good live act? Was it fun? etc. etc. Oh yeah, the ep, is that just the three songs that're up on their myspazz page?I'm crap at detail but I'll try. I'm sure the others will be better at some more info.

EP was 3 tracks - I can post which songs later on if you like.

Gig was very fun. I can't get right into gigs at the moment because I have stitches which get taken out on Wednesday (which was annoying for Bodyjar last night!). I guess I'd describe them at punky-celtic-irish-pirate kinda music. But you'd all know better than me and feel free to yell at me and correct me :)

They were excellent live - all the instruments come together nicely. A fair bit of the crowd were dancing/moving around. I'd see them again.

Sarah
01-20-2007, 05:18 PM
Yeah, they were good last night too! So much energy, it was really fun, everyone was jumping around and stuff which was good!

Some people were asking requests - so that must have been a positive sign to the band! The crowd went off for Bass Strait Town (or City or whatever the fuck it was called), as you can expect!

I can't believe how much I missed Trav's faces, hehe, he made me grin everytime he pulled one :) Not only that, I'd be just really getting into a song and there'd be a really awsome beat or drum bit and I'd think how cool that sounded, then It would hit me that it's Trav playing...it was very odd!!

I have a personal thing about Union themed songs, they make me cringe, but that's just me I guess. So besides that song the rest of the set was really good, i was as tired as, and i felt really really out of place at Trout, but still was glad I went :)

Cam I'm sure there is a name for that sort of music, but that's how I was describing it to Michael before the gig, haha.

Things I've read about them usually say celtic-punk I think.

I read an article about them in Beat today. Interesting what Travis had to say about TLE. I'll let everybody make up their own minds.

Bec
01-20-2007, 05:36 PM
Yeah, it's a shame they're not still on good terms with each other by the sound of it. :( Although as a TLE fan it's interesting to read about why he left, I think it would be nice if the articles about The Currency were actually about The Currency, not Trav and his feelings about TLE.

If anyone wants me to type up any of the articles I can.

Colezy
01-20-2007, 05:39 PM
Would you be able to type/scan the one in Beat?? I've got one on them, which doesn't have much TLE talk in it but thats probs cause Trav isn't the one being interviewed. But yeah, it was a good little article. I think it was in The Buzz.

AlinaPOW
01-20-2007, 05:54 PM
There's one that doesn't have Trav being interviewed? I haven't seen that! Or is that some crazy tassie version of Beat? Who was being interviewed?

Bec
01-20-2007, 05:56 PM
This was in the January 17th issue of Beat, complete with a photo of Trav. There were also articles in Beat and Inpress the week before that :) I can type those out too if you like.

When Travis Demsey left a steady job with The Living End five years ago, he set out on a journey where the music mattered more than the money, where friendship mattered more than keeping a record label happy. And his journey has culminated in The Currency, a Celtic rock outfit with Travis on the drums, and more traditional instruments than you can shake a shillelagh at.

Travis says he left The Living End because the music was becoming stale. "I felt that we had a difference of opinion about where the band should go musically. I think, in a way, I wasn't respected enough. I think when you're not respected enough, you can do two things: you can whinge about it, or you can move on. I decided to move on, and I'm glad I did. I don't think they've made great music since I've left. I don't think they had much faith in my ability to be a drummer or a contributor to the band, but I think the proof is in the pudding."

So while it may seem like a strange leap from punk drummer to Celtic punk drummer, Travis says that coming up with band members was easier than it might seem. "I grew up on punk rock, way back when I was a young skateboarder living in the country down in Gippsland. I think in some regards, a lot of the subculture music has that punk rock attitude. Punk rock is a scene, but anyone who is in the punk rock scene knows that it can be broken down into 70s punk rock, early 80s punk rock, skate punk... it goes on and on. I like to think more of punk as an attitude. Reggae has that attitude, a lot of folk music has that attitude, country 'n' western has that attitude. We're just trying to blend Australian Celtic tales with the attitude of punk."

The band has been rehearsing for a year solid, and has already recorded an impressive sounding three-track EP at Sing Sing, which they will be launching this week at their fifth gig ever. "We recorded it at Sing Sing with our friend Richard Stolz. He has done a lot of other bands like After The Fall. He did mates rates for us and Sing Sing looked after us. We're just finalising where we are going to do the new album now. But it's going to be brilliant, mark my words. The Currency is pretty lucky. I work pretty much half the week as a drum tech. I'm the only guy who does it in Melbourne. I work in studios four days a week, tuning drums for some of the biggest bands in Australia. Having that experience, and a friend in the studios already, will certainly make our album better than what a lot of bands can afford. We know the tricks of the trade and have friends in high places. That being said, the friendship is what matters, not what we can get out of these people.

"Hopefully we're going to start making an album in two weeks. We're not going to wait for a record deal. Although one would be lovely, we don't want to jump for the first one offered. We will finance it ourselves. Hopefully we will put out an album mid-year. The Currency doesn't want to take over the world. We just want to be an Australian band that occasionally flits overseas to play people some Australian Celtic music. I think we could put out an album every year. I think our sort of music can reach people who aren't into musical proficiency, it's more about the attitude and the good times that we can bring. It's about what's going to move people and get them to tap their foot while they have a drink."

Travis says he likes to imagine he's the captain of The Currency ship, but he qualifies that by saying he's just the pushiest one in the band. "Someone has to take charge, and I'm happy to be the one to do it. I've been in a position that not many of the other people have been in. For a good five years of my life I was touring the world with the biggest bands in the world of that time. From The Offspring to Green Day to Rancid and Blink 182, all that sort of stuff comes into play. With that experience, you see how shit has to work sometimes.

"I have a great group of people in the band who tolerate my always talking about what we can do and how to record for no money. I get in your face. I don't like the grayness in the music scene; I like it black or white. Bands are lazy, they fuck around too much. You've always got time to smoke pot and drink. Do that after you've done the work. Too many bands wake up late and play Playstation. The money that The Living End used for two albums, I reckon I could have made three albums a year for ten years."

The Currency launches their self-titled EP at the Northcote Social Club on Thursday January 18. $10 includes a CD and support acts Coue Method (ex-MYC) and Donnie (Blueline Meid).

The Buzz hey? This week? I might still have a chance! I wouldn't normally interject here, but people need to remember that Chris and Scott have refrained from bad mouthing Trav for 5 years as they're 'above' that kind of headline grabbing attention. I'm surprised about the references to money considering no one cared more about money than Trav.

Scott & Chris don't need to badmouth Trav to get a headline - the quality of their music is enough to get attention. Nuff said.

Yeah I was shocked reading the articles because I've heard nothing but nice things about Trav from Chris and Scott, as you said. So I take it you've read the last few street press articles?

I did notice that, and I reckon that's awesome of TLE to do that. I'm just wondering how much in these interviews they did actually talk about Trav being in TLE and how much the 'paper cut out of the Currency/other stuff.

Haha, yeah, that was the very first thing I thought about! I remember we were talking about it in the city whenever that was...
I should go into Beat and ask :p

Only the Inpress one, but that was enough - I won't bother reading any others. Nothing has changed - Trav will still say anything (true or not) to get his head in a paper

nicely put. i always thought that they were all on good terms, but i guess that was just from chris and scott 'being the better person' and never saying anything. what awsome guys.

and, he says the "price is in the pudding," yet tle are the ones with the chart toppers & his band is nameless. he's basically bad mouthing himself.

oh trav.

Being at the top of a chart has never been a reflection of quality in music. Only popularity, or good promotional work.

Most of TLE's best recorded material would never make it as 'chart topping' music. Doesn't detract from it being as good as it is.

But I have to admit to being a little surprised about the references to money in regards to Trav too.
I would have assumed that someone who really cared about money and status would have a) stayed on with TLE regardless of how stale he thought they'd become musically, & b) lived anywhere other than an average working class suburb like he does...

More power to him for following the path he believes in

Oh, and i_heart_you, it's " the proof is in the pudding" not "the price is in the pudding". Just by the way.
And if Trav's band was nameless, there wouldn't be a thread about The Currency... something to think about...

haha thanks for the correction! ;)

and i guess you're right, i was just angry that people would treat each other that way when they used to be bandmates and such.

Sure. It's sad to think they aren't pals anymore, but the comment that "Chris and Scott have refrained from bad mouthing Trav for 5 years", makes me think that there - as I've long suspected - is something more to why Trav left than the line that we got told at the time. ie; more than just musical differences.

Not that it matters one way or the other why he left. He's gone, and obviously happy in his ventures since leaving, and good on him!

So, who went to the show last night? I ended up seeing The Nervous Wreckers at the Ori in Springwood instead.
