Oooh, I just remembered that I have a decent video of Sum Of Us from the Melbourne gig. It's missing a bit at the start (thought I was recording, but wasn't :p) so if anyone wants I can upload it at some point. I know that there's versions from the European gigs, so people might not be interested.

So I had to use the converted videos visual combined with the audio from the original video because once I had converted the original to make it smaller it screwed up the audio. It sounded shocking!
So now it's sitting at 98mb. Considering it's not fantastic (but still decent enough) quality, is that too big?

that's just chris's great playing
fingering picking the high notes and using his pick for the base line/notes
something like that
mattheal
06-04-2009, 05:56 PM
yeah its all one guitar, songs called freight train
tab here (http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/tabs/c/chet_atkins/freight_train_tab.htm) chris does his usual thing were he changes it up a heap but that'll get you the basics
Ben reed
06-04-2009, 06:03 PM
i would learn that right now if i hadn't broken my high e string...
Craigels
06-04-2009, 06:33 PM
It;s called travis picking, where your thumb (or pick) plays a bass line on strings 4, 5 and 6 while your other fingers play rhythm/melody on strings 1, 2 and 3.
The Dying Start
06-04-2009, 07:27 PM
Good ol' Merle.
Craigels
06-04-2009, 07:41 PM
He's great, aye.
He 'invented' travis picking without even playing like that himself. Merle played a bass line with his thumb and only used his infex finger for the rest. Chet Atkins "invented" what we know as travis picking. He listened to Merle on the radio and tried to play like him but used his index, middle and ring finger to play the rest. So really it should be called atkins picking.
The Dying Start
06-04-2009, 07:46 PM
I'm a bit more of a fan of Chet for his amazing covers. Insanity. But Merle wrote some great songs himself.

Not necesarrily TLE,
But here is a vid of some guy playing white noise at the APRA awards.
I really feel sorry for Chris having to see this butchering of his own song
Link (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7XkE03Eh4rM) **WARNING: YOU MAY WELL WANT TO STAB YOUR EYES AND EARS OUT AFTERWARDS**
EDIT: also here is a semi decent video, alright sound of Roll On in Oslo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bUuXPd_S_9s) - multiple angles too
he doesn't even remember the words! not to mention his awful voice and silly moves.
I hope Chris wasn't anywhere near that place  If organisers wanted to discredit this song, then they did a right choice with a performer!
EDIT: also here is a semi decent video, alright sound of Roll On in Oslo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bUuXPd_S_9s) - multiple angles too
I can't stand sound of this video, my ears are hurted!
if you look closer then you will notice that Chris holds different guitars at "different angles" :p that wasn't filmed during same song.
mattheal
07-15-2009, 11:28 PM
yeah they do the verse twice because he fucked it up.
and even then its still sucks. i really feel sorry for Chris to be given an award for song of the year, and then have someone kill it completely not long after
edit: haha yeah i didnt notice the different guitars until the second cut across :p
when I knew that "TLE are playing at European Festivals" it definitely looked not this way in my mind:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X_LUL9R4G3k
such a small stage.:ermm: but pretty long and nice e-boogie solo.

 White Noise on Les Paul and without slap base sounds weak! An this gay is strange and weirdo. Arrangement sounds like song for eurovision competition in '81 year. Pity that we didn't see it before gig in Oslo. It could be fun to usk Chris about his feelings at this moment.
p/s: some man stands up and trying to went avay in the end of this video - maybe it's Chris hurried to bathroom.

07-16-2009, 07:12 PM
It was obviously meant to be a jazzier piece than the original, and besides the fact that he forgot the words, i thought it wasnt that bad. Something a tiny bit different from the original, nowhere near as good as it, but still not a bad effort, he couldve tried to copy the whole original completely and made it look worse, but he didnt, so yeah, not bad i guess. ;)
thelivingvines
07-16-2009, 07:24 PM
that's all well and good... but the guy couldn't sing at all. The fact of the matter is that it was supposed to be a tribute to the original, which had just won an award for being the best song of the year at an awards ceremony where the writer is attending......
THE LAST THING YOU DO IS FORGET THE FRIGGIN' WORDS!!

Breakfast with TLE in New Zealand (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C40beepd_PU)
Lolz, they got the names mixed up XD
that's pretty irritating. not only Scott became a lead singer now, but Chris is a "bass guitarist" Of course, bass guitar is easier to take on tour instead of huge heavy double bass but does it worth it? :p
Silly TV people, they also showed same fragment from WN music video two times

Er... no. no they aren't. I completely disagree.
Any words/ phrases/ intonation in particular that might convince me otherwise?
To you they don't sound similar, but I think they do as of right now.
I have to watch more NZ based programs to get around the differences.
thelivingvines
10-10-2009, 04:21 AM
Chels, I lived in Canada on and off for over 4 years - I'm very familiar with the accent. One of my best mates is an aussie, and I've gotten to know plenty of Kiwis in my time too. I've heard enough of the various accents to know that they are very very different. Why do you think they sound similar? c'mon, justify your opinion to me, humor me.
Watch Flight of The Conchords - there's enough New Zealand in there for you surely? and the number of jokes in there about the NZ accent being misunderstood on the North American continent should tell you that the accents are not similar.
Kacky
10-10-2009, 05:16 AM
Why are you making a deal out of it? I'm just stating that I can't tell them apart easily because I have had little to NO contact or experience with ANY New Zealanders, therefore, hearing them talk for those TWO minutes didn't do it for me.
FOR NOW, they sound SIMILAR to ME. I said SIMILAR, NOT the SAME. I'll eventually get around the differences with pronunciation and voice once I watch more programs. Like I said, I've listened/watched NOTHING New Zealand related until now.
thelivingvines
10-10-2009, 05:50 AM
Because I can't understand how you - having been listening to an aussie band for x years, and because of the undeniable similarity between aussie and new zealander accents - could possibly have formed that opinion.
I DID NOT say you said they are the same - in fact I categorically made a point of not doing so.
I'm not making a big deal - I'm just asking you to explain where you hear the similarity. It's a simple question.
Kacky
10-10-2009, 06:25 AM
First off, some people aren't good with accents, I'm only good with the ones I'm familiar with. I am not familiar with the New Zealand accent. If I didn't know that was an interview from New Zealand I would have first thought at the top of my head that was an Australian one. And I know they're different. I just can't differentiate them myself, and I wish I was able to more easily because every country has their own unique accents and voice.
For example: there was a guy from Israel at our mall selling these bean bag things, and I asked him if he was from France because there were some words that sounded very French-esque to me. I felt stupid, but my mom took me out of the embarrassment by chatting with him as she's been there before. Proof that I suck with accents I'm not familiar with.

Can you stop taking this so personally, please?
All I asked is for you to tell me where you hear the similarity between your accent and the antipodean accents?
You also said you thought the Aus accent is similar to Canadian - ignore NZ for a minute - you can't say you've not heard that much before, and are not used to it. So, I am interested to know, where - and by all means refer to particular words - you hear the similarity between a canadian accent and an australian accent.
Kacky
10-10-2009, 07:46 AM
I'm not taking it personally. Is it not hard to understand that I, as ONE SINGLE PERSON, cannot differentiate the Aus and NZ accents?????? Not a huge deal.
And when the fuck did I say an Aus and Canadian are similar? That doesn't make sense at all, cause no shit I can tell the difference of my own people and Australian.
All I stated was one personal opinion about MYSELF and I get fucking nagged, drop it.
Kacky
10-10-2009, 07:49 AM
I thought that was a pretty bad joke :p
Man, the NZ and Aus accents are pretty similar to a Canadian 0_o
And if you're talking about this quote above, I was NOT talking about the Canadian accent or voice. I was talking about how some people that I know that are Canadians, as well as myself have a harder time differentiating the Aus and NZ accents because of their location and region.
It's like someone from Europe asking me if I'm American, because some over there can't seem to tell us apart either.
I hear little difference between canadian and american, huge difference between american and australian and no difference at all between australian and NZ accents. :flowers:
thelivingvines
10-10-2009, 07:55 AM
Man, the NZ and Aus accents are pretty similar to a Canadian 0_o
you said it right about there. Definitively, I might add.
Now there's no need to get tetchy and overly defensive - all I asked, not nagged, is for you to quantify your opinion by reference to something specific, thus I might be able to understand why you hold the opinion you do. This will be the fourth time.
At no point did I say you were wrong to have opinion. However, I should also suggest to you that accents are objective, not subjective.

ut oh- bad move amur! Shit storm coming your way right about now. You know they hate each other, right?
.... though I agree. Most of the time they are hard to tell apart. Unless it's an accent from the deep south, or somewhere with a very distinctive accent - like Newfoundland, or Boston.

For sure they sound similar. There are plenty of subtleties though:

Aus - "feesh and cheeps"
NZ - "fush and chups"
To you and me - "Center"
Aus - "Centah"
NZ - "Cintre"

The most commonly spread-around bit has nearly the same riff as "Til The End" (the main lead riff, right after the introductory chords), it's just octaves, but even the notes are quite similar!
And the lyrics that could be deciphered from the garbled samples play on the same themes as Radiohead's "Kid A" ("The rats and children follow me out of town....come on, kids", pied piper, et al)!!
If it does appear on the next album at all, I'm betting it'll be a portion of it in some new form (ala the ending of "Living Underground" on "New Frontier"). As you guys mentioned they have been working on new tunes while on tour, which seems to be tradition for them...remember the all-too-short sequence of Chris, Scott, and Trav jamming on "Decide For Me" on the portable studio in From Here On In?

I re-watched FHOI DVD few days ago and was wondering about this song - what it is? Also what "Rainy Day" and "Bully" are?

I re-watched FHOI DVD few days ago and was wondering about this song - what it is? Also what "Rainy Day" and "Bully" are?I'm guessing bully would be that heavy sounding one during the Roll On demos bit.
Rainy Day might be that song they played soon after they were talking about Cher or something.

This (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TMztQr2V6Bo)is pretty impressive considering I don't htink they've rehearsed it for a looong time.
Oh! They nevertheless surrendered to "monday bastards"! Thanx for video.

Amur, the FHOI DVD contains a bunch of snippets of either unrecorded/unreleased songs, including the ones mentioned above, an unused section of "Killing The Right" (apparently most of the songs on the Roll On album were heavily edited down before their final versions), and the at-the-time unreleased "Flood the Sky". "Bully" is indeed the song shown during the Roll On sessions with the heavy sounding intro that then feeds into a ska-lite verse. Trav wrote the song, even though we only hear a few lyrics in the sample ("You think you've got the answer/You think the question's solved/You know I tried to tell ya/But you just won't be told"). Not sure which one Rainy Day is, I'd have to go back and watch the DVD again, all the little 'extra'/unreleased songs generally have little giveaways to which one they are. EDIT: I LOST THE DOCUMENTARY DISC!!! Can you still get FHOI (NTSC vers.) online??
While I do understand allowing the visceral nature of a song to take over, so-called "over-analysis" for me is half of the joy of music. I love pouring over the little twists and turns, the eccentricites of the production/songwriting, different versions, references to other works and the origins of the tune...I enjoy talking about the songs almost as much as I do listening to them. Besides man, what else is a forum for?? How many times can you say or read "This song totally roxorz my soxorz!!!"?? Just for a random example, without this kind of shit, "Mr. Tambourine Man" would just be a ditty about a dude with a percussion instrument. Sorry if thinking about stuff rains on your parade...no wait, I don't care.

Pretty sure it was that, I haven't watched the DVD but I am certain it's that.

Thanks! Edited accordingly. You're probably right, that was the one line I wasn't totally sure about, as I haven't seen it in a while either...I remember the rest very clearly, though.

I guess it's just my teen angst because in english the teachers seem to find more meaning that the author in a book and sometimes it appears to be like that here. I like looking into the songs a bit but sometimes it gets over the top.

Absolutely true. But when taken in moderation, as in, analysing a song deep enough to scratch the surface of it, is quite fun in itself. Or/And even the mere question of "I wonder why he wrote it like that" is enough to prolong the fun of a song.

Easy, ladies and gents. Each to their own. Can't we all get along?
Personally I enjoy the insights into unreleased material on the DVD's but I don't really get too far into dissecting the snippets themselves.
On the topic of Rats, I think that perhaps the over-discussion may have hyped it a bit too far. With no-one but the band remembering exactly how it goes, maybe the talk is raising expectations of what could be an average song. Let's wait until it sees the light of day / next album tracklisting announcement before we really bring it up as a major topic, yeah? I'd love to speculate on it, but it seems that the overexposure to talk of it has made it a poisonous word to be spoken.

apologies.... it was just too easy. I had a really strong coffee this morning... and it makes me evil. No offense intended. Seriously.
In all honesty, I don't think TLE lyrics are as conducive to analysis as other artists with a more political agenda. I find TLE songs to be a most useful exercise in aural disection of song writing - whether by structure or song hooks.

I remember how Rats goes - I just don't know how to translate music and what I hear into something that people will understand :p
Thanks for all of the videos guys - even the ones in the European Tour threads :) They're all awesome!

Now, that's just stereotyping. I'm pretty sure Hitler said those exact words.

Hitler was a frustrated, failed artist....so if not enough people buy the next TLE album, Chris could go genocidal! That's a good promo, right?
