... help me out?

So, it just occurred to me that seeing as I'm leaving the day after tomorrow, I should probably have some idea of what I want to do once I'm there.

Apart from the forum party shenanigans, I've got pretty much no idea what else I should see/do/etc.

So, if anyone knows any decent places or gigs or shops or whatever, be nice and tell me?

:)

Chapel Street Bazaar is the shiznit if you are gonna be in that part of the world. Out Of The Closet on Flinders Street is nice for retro clothes.

Missing Link Records. Dirt Cheap CDs on Swanston Street is good for cheap stuff...like nothing over $20 ( a couple of my friends work there). Have a look at Dragonfly Discs as well.....it's equally as cheap. I take it you'll be sticking your head into Route 66? Queen Victoria Market on Sundays.

Not much else I can recommend as your underage....

Yeah that's a pretty good list there. You should check out Route 66, and Retro Star which is just near by... Corner of Flinders Lane and Swanston street.. Near the Subway (the sandwich shop, not a train station :p), they're pretty damn sweet shops, bit expensive though! Pretty much all the shops around Flinders Street are worth walking past. And Strachan Lane if you really wanted :p
hmmum, I'll have more of a think for things other than shops.
I dunno how easy it'd be to navigate around, are you touring around with a Melbournite friend or on your own?

You could always go to the top of the Rialto :)

Queen Victoria Market on Sundays.

The Night Markets are on there, Wed nights until Feb I think. Really nice atmosphere. Usually full of more crafty things, and fooooood galore, as well as bands, buskers etc... Annnnd the cupcake ladies! Oh yeah!! :)

Could anyone tell me how much you'd pay to put up a stall at the markets?
I mean.. at the markets here, its like $20 or something.

Going up the Rialto is pretty cool. You can go for a tour of the MCG, go down and visit St Kilda. Jump on the free circle tram. Take a train ride from Flinders Station. Just go to a random suburb (there's stacks to choose from). Walk along the Yarra River past the Casino etc, That part of town has a whole heap of cool architecture and such.

Me and some friends went to Melbourne for schoolies, it was pretty awesome. The old Melbourne Gaol was really good, you should go there. Er....St Kilda and Queen Victoria markets were fun, as was wandering around Southbank, dinner at Lygon St, free City Circle trams for stingey students like us, the aquarium, Luna Park. Also it was good to just wander around the city, heaps of shopping around Bourke St and a whole bunch of cool little lanes and alleys to get lost in. :)

the City Circle tram was pretty sweet, even though the people I was with tended to just hop regular trams during the day :p

Dirt Cheap CDs is good.
and I liked wandering around Brunswick St (Fitzroy?) and checking out the little shops and restaurants.
also the free galleries at Federation Square and the National Gallery of Victoria, as well as the various coffee shops and street art in the little alleyways in the CBD.
and watching crazy street performers on Southbank.

too bad you're not old enough to go to a bar and get hit on by sketch Melbourne boys.

Yeah, Brunswick Street is such fun to have a poke around. M and I went for a wander down there yesterday and found some awesome places as well as visiting a favourite of mine. The gelato shop called Trampoline on said street was an awesome idea, just quietly.

getting a plate of spanakopita and then gelato afterwards = good times.

Funny you mention that, I went to Dirt Cheap CD along Swanson just before I left. Got some pretty decent CD's. We've got the same store in Perth but it's an awesome store.

One thing I noticed about Melbourne, heaps and heaps of hot Italian chicks. As apposed to the Surfie blondes in Perth.

A lot of the places I was going to say have been said.

Well, Chinatown's an awesome place (still) and the Bakery's there are well priced and I think sometimes better than our usual bakeries. Yum-Cha is also awesome too :p

As for music stores and all that jazz, as said, Dirt Cheap & The Dragonfly ones are good. HMV is there too.

Melbourne has a lot to see and do. They have people who give out free hugs :D

Yum Cha is such an awesome idea. Had that for the first time a few months back, it was great. Until my friend dared me to eat bull testicle. I can't turn down dares like that. It wasn't that bad, actually. That was such a funny day.

I think there's one of those in St Kilda too? I should try to find it - I have a voucher for there :)

I wouldn't know cause I know next to nothing about St Kilda, but you should definitely find it. And they have free samples!

Neryssah

Trying to find out where the zoo is for my mother :p
Plus, I'm not allowed to go out once it's dark, my parents are pretty iffy about doing stuff. I might go out later for photos though if I can get a keycard.

Actually there's a tram that goes from Flinders St to fairly close or maybe even right to the zoo. I'm clueless ...

Bec
01-10-2007, 09:11 PM
Royal Park station has little animal pictures on the signs :)
So yeah, either that or a tram, not sure which number but if you go to www.metlinkmelbourne.com.au you should be able to find out

we went to southern cross station (spencer street?) and took a train from there...not sure what one though...

Bec
01-10-2007, 09:16 PM
Okay if royal park is indeed the right station (which I'm pretty sure it is) then you want the Upfield train line or the 19 or 55 tram which go from Elizabeth street.
To get to elizabeth street from flinders street station, turn left when you come down the steps and walk down flinders street until you get to elizabeth which should be on your right :)

Jodez
01-10-2007, 09:19 PM
there is 2 two trams from flinders/elizabeth st (57 and 59). the 57 goes up near the zoo, but you would have to walk and the 59 you can go to another stop thingy and get another tram (55 or something dont quote me :p) and that goes fairly close to the zoo. OR you could just catch the train, dunno which line tho

Bec
01-10-2007, 09:43 PM
Oh, and if in doubt and you're catching a tram, ask the tram driver, they know more than me :p
