*edit*
They do not say what the name is in reference to, but they had the name The Chaser before Chas became part of the team.
From wikipedia:
The Chaser was formed by Dominic Knight, Charles Firth, Craig Reucassel, and Julian Morrow, and in 1999 ran a fortnightly newspaper entitled The Chaser. The group later added Chas Licciardello, Andrew Hansen, and Chris Taylor, to assist with its publication. Through the help of Andrew Denton, the Chaser team produced various shows for the ABC: most notably CNNNN. In 2005, The Chaser began filming a pilot for a new television series for the ABC, with the working title The Age of Terror Variety Hour. The Chaser team signed a contract with the ABC to produce 27 half hour episodes for 2006, which would be based on news reviews, studio monologues and confrontations with politicians, celebrities, and business leaders. The show was to be presented by Morrow, Hansen, Reucassel, Taylor and Licciardello.
The ABC rejected the name The Age of Terror Variety Hour and other names including Thank Allah It's Friday. ABC did accept The Chaser is Right, although it was later rejected by Morrow, while the title Hey Hey, it's the Chaser was rejected after a pilot under that name was filmed in 2005. They eventually selected The Chaser's War on Everything as the title. The show was to be performed in front of a live audience, in a more relaxed format than CNNNN and other Chaser television productions.

by 'they' i mean, y'all in this thread. Not the chaser themselves by that way.
Anyway, I'm glad that they didn't end up going to another network, even though they could have. There's no way another channel would let them get up to half the shit that the ABC have.

Yeah, they should have used that. I didn't mean that chas had anything to do with the chas-er thing. That was just the first name I could think of.
It should be interesting to see what if they will follow a similar format next year. I don't know if they can really do public pranks as effectively anymore without wearing a disguise or something so they might do less of those?
I mean the ones they do in public. Annoying politicians is always fun. They shouldnt ever stop that.

Along with the walk thing, the article I just read said that k-rudd has more security around him in general.
Apparently they got arrested in rome for flying a blimp over the vatican (presumably with something rude/blasphemous written on it.) That prank alone sounds awfully expensive. The ABC must be spending half their budget on them or something :p

everyone knows who they are now. They can't really do that stuff as effectively anymore.

yeah that's what i was thinking... back in the day when they used to do the shit like going to take away restaurants asking for burgers with only the bun, chips with only the salt etc... everyone would just laugh at them now.
still, the surprise spruiker was always good. and great moments in history.

I still find them hilarious. But I do agree, it wasn't as funny as it has been in the past. Fingers crossed for the rest of the season.

Maybe they're starting off slowly and it'll build up as the season progresses!
I forgot to watch it, I was too busy sleeping :p

I thought the intro's were pretty funny, the pink KKK outfits, and Andrew giving shit to that chick who made up the whole thing bout the guy getting shot.
Only bad thing is now they have to go overseas to get a reaction. ppl over here just ignore them or know who they are.

So I'm sure most of us here would have seen the news/A Current Affair tonight about the Chaser boys' latest skit about sick and dying children. News story and clip - http://www.news.com.au/entertainment/story/0,28383,25584945-10229,00.html
Thoughts? Comments?
Personally, I can see why certain groups would be highly offended by it and I'm not at all condemning them for their outcry about all this. However, I'm quite certain that other religious groups for instance have been offended just as much by their past pranks and skits. And while I believe it's wrong to pick on people who can't help their situation, at the end of the day it's exactly what was said in interviews today - black comedy. I think it has to be taken with a certain degree of lightheartedness, and in watching the program people should really, by now, expect that it will include some sort of offensive material. All I'm saying is if you don't like the shit they do then don't fricken watch it. Phew, glad that's off my chest.
This could potentially get heated...

hmmmm i dunno. I taped the show last night but didn't get a chance to watch it until i saw the news this arvo, where i think it was the 3rd story (seriously? bloody hell. slow news day.)
I'm torn on it. I don't want to look like a hypocrite, because i really do like the show and its dark comedy. And that's what it is - dark comedy. it's not meant to make you go 'hahaha' it's meant to make you go 'ohhhhhhhhaaha'. In that light, it's achieved its goal.
Ultimately, the Chaser team deal with touchy subjects. But religion and politics, which are their focus most of the time, are something that a lot of people joke about. Not that i'm saying it's ok to joke about things other people do, but you almost EXPECT jokes to happen about them. Dying children could be a bit much i think.
I agree with Kim though... it's the same with every show that gets criticised and called to get off the air... i still haven't met anyone who is literally chained to a chair and forced to watch something. If you don't like it, change channels. If you don't like what's on any channel at one particular time, read a fucking book. It's like the whole thing about Krusty the Clown causing underage smoking, and Humphrey not wearing any pants... i mean for fucks sake some people should just lighten up.

What they did was pretty out of line and over the top but it's a bit of a shit happens thing isn't it??
I'm sorry to those who have children who have been sick, or those who have family members who have been very ill..
they made a mistake..but it's what these guys do for a living.

I agree with you guys, it did go a bit too far. It's one of those touch-y feel-y things.
The Chasers do a lot of that stuff to cause contraversy, and that's just what they did. People need to lighten up but by the same token, the chasers might need to tone it down a bit.

I'm of the opinion that in comedy, anyone or anything is fair game. It's all about how it's delivered, and in this case everybody knows it's a comedy show, they're obviously not being serious. I used to do standup comedy, and I made jokes about Jesus and redheads and Tourette syndrome and SIDS babies. I got a few bad reactions with the SIDS joke, but for the most part people are reasonable and realise it's just a joke. It might not have been to their personal taste, but they got over it. Others just thought it was funny and didn't care that it was "bad taste", because they could see the humour in it. Yeah, I'm not famous and didn't broadcast my jokes on national TV, but I really don't think that should change anything. People just need to lighten up, and like others have said, just don't watch the show if you're easily offended.

Great publicity once again. I think a few of us were kinda "did they really do that" after watching it. But they got the same reaction from the Eulogy song. The thing that make the Chasers so good is that they're honest and they say things that everyone else is thinking, even if it's politically incorrect or might offend someone.

The chaser has made a name for itself by being controversial. I think they have to continue pushing boundaries in order to shock people, otherwise they'd just end up middle of the road and boring.

this was a shit thing to do because the thing is, young kids who are very ill or terminal may not understand the joke
just put yourself in the shoes of someone facing death
you don't want jokes about it
Kylie eats dugong for tea

Rating: M [Violence]
Its not a program for children.
Sure, someone facing death might not like it but if you use that point then you place so much restriction what can be done in comedy. With just about anything you can say 'someone in such and such a situation would not like it' Sure, they wouldn't. It doesn't stop people from making jokes about all sorts of things.
Ben reed
06-05-2009, 01:54 AM
that doesn't mean that they don't watch it
does it mean that no children watch the harry potter films that are rated M
and also to a more extreme degree, most teenaged guys watch porn and that's over 18s
Kylie eats dugong for tea
06-05-2009, 01:57 AM
sure, but that's a parent's responsibility, not that of the chaser.
Gosh, imagine what any television or movies would be like if the producer was thinking 'mygollygosh, children might be watching this even though its inappropriate for them. Better tone it down.'
They make the show for adults. Young children aren't the target audience.

I don't think any subject is taboo these days. You can pretty much make fun of anything and everything as long as it's done in the right context. No matter what you joke about you're always gonna offend a SMALL MINORITY.
Kimjar
06-05-2009, 06:55 PM
Ben - sorry but Kylie is right, they put ratings on television and films for a reason. If parents choose to allow their 10 year old terminally ill child to watch the Chaser and they get upset about it then it's their own bloody fault. It's the parent's responsibility to determine whether the child in question is mature enough to handle the content of a program.
As for adolescents watching porn, realistically all it's gonna do in most cases is give them a higher sex drive and maybe teach them a few tricks for later. And I'm pretty sure that the majority of parents know that their child (of either sex - watching porn is not exclusively a male behaviour you know) will at some stage during puberty (and beyond in Glenn's case :p) satisfy their curiosity and download some dodgy porn flick off the internet. If they're worried, they can put filters on their computers. Besides, that's probably part of the reason they teach kids so young about sex - so they're not quite as shocked and are prepared for if/when they do stumble across their dad's box of vintage Playboy magazines in the basement at a young age.

wtf. Seriously. This just goes to show how much sway the media has. And really, it this has affected anyone it's all the media's fault. All the ppl who are offended wouldn't be offended if the media hadn't brought it to the WHOLE public's attention. Anyone who watchers chasers expects them to do controversial things.

Yeah, I understand that the joke was probably in bad taste, but the media ALWAYS blow things waaaaay out of proportion and cause people to freak.
It's a good part of what makes people these days so paranoid.

I've decided that if the news didn't keep playing the fucking clip every morning, midday and night hardly anyone would have seen the skit. The stupid fuckers have caused far more offense by showing it constantly every night...

It's weird, everyone here always complains about American media constantly making a huge deal over things, but apparently it's not just us, which is kind of a relief.
I really can't stand it though. The media blows something out of proportion and people act like idiots and freak out over it.

Monday 8pm, so you'll probably need to send the form today or tomorrow. You can print it from the AEC website, then sign it and send it.
There's not a lot out there about it yet...but it seems to be a bit different to their other election shows. Perhaps not as much about annoying pollies on their morning walks
