Hello all, it's been a while since i've posted on the board, or even lurked. Those constant buggy boards and stuff had made it too much of a hassle. I'll try to post a little more regularly now things seem a little more stable.

Anyway, the Beatles. I have listened, and liked, a couple of beatles songs here and there, but have never got into them in a way i think i should have. I want to get all their albums, and i'd like to know if which, if any, i should avoid, what order i should listen to them, etc.

Also, it seems hard to get any beatles album for less than $20, usually they are in between 25 and 35, which kind of sucks. I do have a record player (read: vinyl) as well, so would it be better to hunt them down on vinyl?

If anybody has any advice or suggestions, or favourite beatles song, or whatever, let me know!

Cheers

Mirm

if you are serious about it your best bet is to invest in a blue vinyl box

it has every beatles album including a rarities vinyl (of course then you invest in past masters 1 and 2 and let it be naked then what ever other rare/live ones you like)

they drastically range in prices, i got mine for below $200 but this one is going for nearly double.

Hey ed! its good to see you back.

Everybody says to start with the album Revolver. I kinda agree because Revolver shows both early style pop Beatles and it starts their transition into their later period, which just kicks tremendous arse. If you can't find Revolver, Rubber Soul also shows this, but Revolver shows it a bit more.

In my opinion, their work from Revolver on is pure brilliance. The second side of Abbey Road is probably the best side of music in the history of the world. Actually, the entire Abbey Road album is a masterpiece. It does so many things. You have beautiful ballads in Something, a shout to their rock and roll roots with Oh Darling!, absurd songs such as Maxwells Silver Hammer and Octopus' Garden, progressive blues-rock of I want you (She's so Heavy), and the greatest medley ever consisting of Golden Slumbers/ Carry That Weight/ The End.

The White Album is another must, but I think it would be hard to get into it if your new to the Beatles. There's a lot of weirdness on that album, and sheer brilliance. And it's 2 discs, so its pretty huge. Some of the best songs the Beatles have done is on this album and its a very important album. A lot of people say the White album is full of filler, but I can only think of maybe 2 songs that could have been cut. One of them songs only goes for 30 seconds.

Sargeant Pepper's is important because of when it was released. It was the first pop record to use studio concrete (basically making weird sounds in the studio). There are great songs on there, but I don't really listen to Sargeant Pepper's that much, I more appreciate what it did to music.

Let it Be is a great album, but marred with bad production. Phil Spector kinda ruined the album with his wall of sound approach. That pissed off Paul, so Paul has re-done Let it Be and called it Let it be...Naked. I'd get the original first.

If you want you could hunt down the blue and red 2 CD sets. They give you a broad view of the Beatles music. Same with 1, which is a collection of their number 1 singles. However, if you decide you want to get more Beatles and get their albums, you have kinda wasted your money getting these compilations.

Their new one, Love, is a masterpiece. But its more fun if you know all the Beatles songs as they mash up multiple Beatles songs.

If you are going to buy a boxset, I would hold out for a bit. There is rumour that they are going to re-master all the albums and release them soon. There is also talk that the Beatles collection going on iTunes is getting closer. From the sounds of the remastered songs on Love, the remastered versions are going to breath new life into the Beatles.

THAT is exactly the kind of thing I was looking for. Its kinda nice to not even be around here for a while, and still have people help me out like that. cheers man.

I don't really want to download the albums, i feel like it's the kind of thing where I should put them in the stereo and just listen. I do realise how much money these guys made, and are still making, but still...

hmmm, thanks though jawn.

I have both the vinyl box and cd box. Chyeah

Anyway, I'd recommend listening to all the albums, preferrably chronologically, because you can really see how much their style of music changed and how they progressed and whatnot. And how much drugs they were taking haha.

I know Jawn is a fan of their music post - and including - Revolver, but I really love their older stuff too. A bunch of it is just classic, catchy pop. Which is cool if you're into that sort of thing.

And uh...I'm not suggesting you download their stuff or anything (because that's ILLEGAL remember kids, and I never do it ever... :o ) but maybe borrow a couple of albums from a friend or something before going out and investing in a whole collection or anything.

Happy listening. And by the way, immediately check out Things We Said Today off the Hard Day's Night album. I am completely in love with this song at the moment.

I too have both vinyl and CDs. I got my CD box for like 270. Winnar! JB at Fountain Gate has one on sale, I think its over 300 bucks. That doesn't help ed, but it certainly helps anybody who lives near Fountain Gate who was thinking "you know, I could really go for them Beatles breadbox CD doovers".

Going through chronologically is fun, but as I said the reason why I chose Revolver is because you get a taste of both the early poppy Beatles and the later Beatles. From there you can make your mind up to go with the poppy side or the later period. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love their older work. Its just simple pop and rock and roll numbers done extremely well. I feel that this poppier material has dated a bit with the mix. The early Beatles material is crying out for a remaster more than the later work actually.

Yeah she lives there now, but lucky my friend who also likes the eagles of death metal has a car we can sleep in.
They're not death metal in any sense of the word, they're just fucking awesome.
They began i think back in 2004, josh homme (from qotsa) and his friend jesse hughes (who hasnt been in any other bands as far as I know) and some guy whos name i forget brought out Peace Love and Deathmetal. Its so good. Basically they just sing about how badly they wanna bang me. I'm cool with that.
And last year they brought out Death By Sexy, which is even better.
The lineup seems to change all the time, but josh homme still drummed on this album (i think) and played a little bit of the guitar. and probably some bass, because he does everything.
I guess its basically anyone that they are friends with who can rock it out like this gets to be in the band at some point. Brody Dalle sings on it a bit because shes pumping Josh. Mark Lanegan is on it, which is good because he is so sexy.
And at one point Jesse released a cover of Addicted to Love with his five yr old son playing drums and his mother sang backups.
they're just so awesome ^_^

hmm, well i've got some ideas now, thanks boys and girls. The reason I started this thread was because form what i understand, the beatles are one of the biggest influences on music from the latter half of the 20th century onwards, and it's good to hear where all todays bands stole their ideas from.
