View Full Version : Comet McNaught
For those in the Southern Hemisphere and can bear to look up into the sky instead of the computer screen are in for a bit of a treat as a bright as comet can be seen just after sunset. You gotta find Venus first (its in the West-ish sky and is the first bright star you can see) and look around there. You'll see another star looking thing with a huge white blurry tail. Hooray! thats a comet! Its supposed to be the brightest comet for 30 odd years or something. What makes it cooler is that once the comet becomes invisible from Earth, you won't see it ever ever again due to the comets orbit. So it really is a once in a lifetime to see this beast.
I saw it tonight. It looks rad.

I had a look last night, and have to agree, it is rather rad. I tried to take a photo, but my camera refuses to see it.

Yeah Ive seen it the last few nights. Earlier last week it was very low on the horizon after sunset but since about Friday it has been a lot higher in the sky and with the long tail it looks amazing.

Is it still around? I'll have to check it out tomorrow, if it's not overcast again.

That thing? We saw it last week.
First time WA beat the Eastern states in something. >.>
Edit: Other than AFL.
Yeah I saw this tonight.
We went up to the local lookout, and some old git goes 'Has it gone wooosh yet?'
It was quite cool.
I remember seeing Hale Bopp ages ago.
It's around till February, but it isn't going to be as bright each time.

Just had a look but couldn't see it due to all the houses. When i went outside there was some drunk dude outside my house so i thought i'd give it a miss walking down to the end of the street to have a look.

yeah the tail is huge, we live pretty much in the middle of nowhere so we had a great view, except for a few trees...
I can't see it here, either its too light or what. But Venus is there, and I can't see any coment. My boyfriend was out camping at Woody Head the other night though and he could see it.

I've been seeing it for around a week now. The tail is rather long and it's bloody awesome. It's nice to live up in the mountain ranges and near the west coast beaches because it gets real clear during the night in summer, you can see alot of stars and stuff, but yeah...the comet is smack bang right there and it's mega rad.

What do you mean?

Well, the sun sets behind the (nearby) mountain range, but hasn't yet fallen below the horizon so the sky is still too bright to see the comet. By the time the sun drops below the horizon and things get dark, the comet has also dropped below the mountains.

Dad and I went up the hill to check it out about an hour ago, scanning the bright horizon. We both thought it was gonna be pretty small and unimpressive as it was still bright and it was mentioned a few days ago, it might have already slipped under the horizon for the day. I got a bit cold, so we decided to stay for another 5 minutes, we saw a satellite shoot across the sky, and watched it fade until the light from the sun was blocked by the atmosphere, then finally the earth itself. Then we got talking about the southern cross and how to find south using it, and started pointing and looking around south/southwest, and bloody hell, I spotted that thing, that tail is so fucking long, it is so bright, so high in the sky! We stayed around for another 10 minutes, me swearing my head off out of awe! Walked home, it's visible from our front step accross the street with the streetlights on and all the light pollution from the houses down that way, it's just amazing! I think dad's now setting up our mediocre telescope, this is gonna be serweet.
The end :p
Me and my little sister just went outside to see it. I had to jump on the trampoline because of the fucking houses and trees. It was good. I actually found myself more in awe at the fact that tonight I realised that you can see the lights of Port Augusta and Whyalla from my backyard. :p But I focused on the comet more and yeah, it's really bright tonight. :)
