View Full Version : Disappointing Setlists

I've been reading posts on this forum for about 10 years now yet haven't really felt the need to post since about 2001. However one thing is starting to bother me about my favourite band.
Despite the fact that the living end are easily the best live band in the country, I'm finding myself, and others becoming less satisfied with their live performances. Now don't get me wrong, it's not the performance itself that is disappointing, it's the track selection. The Living End are once again finding a whole new generation of fans with a new album but I feel like everytime I see them they are performing to only the people who haven't seen them before. If you've seen the Living End several times the setlist becomes a little predictable. I find myself enjoying the jams between songs more than the actual songs.
The inclusion of new songs is always great, but several of them were only seen at the Longnecks shows. Obviously the band's huge back catalogue of hits means you're bound to hear a whole lot of singles but these days it's the same singles played everytime. Surely Save the Day, Pictures In The Mirror, One Said To The Other, etc could get a run in the place of others?
I think the Living End are a band that are that good live, they can play any song and someone who hasn't seen them before would be impressed. Why not throw in some live classics like Hold Up, Revolution Regained or Monday that don't get a run anymore?
Prior to the release of White Noise the band was always good at throwing in some left field tracks but lately it's just the same old set everytime.... Raise The Alarm, What's On Your Radio, Second Soultion, Prisoner of Society, All Torn Down, Wake Up, Moment In The Sun, Who's Gonna Save Us, West End Riot, Roll On, White Noise.
As I've said earlier, it's hard to include everything when you've got 5 albums worth of hits, but even bands like Supergrass, Oasis and Crowded House manage to play some non-singles or lesser known songs despite their massive back catalogues.
I've seen the guys perform nearly 50 times over the last 12 years so it's very hard to be critical of them and I'll never get sick of them, but really hope the sets begin to become a little more true-fan friendly.

Yeah, I'm a bit tired of the same singles they play every gig.
Get some Bsides in the mix, that'll be great.

When they were in Perth they played Read About It, and I'm pretty sure they did something like that for the whole White Noise tour. For the festivals they probably just go with the more popular songs because they'd be playing to more people who don't really know the band.
That said, I'd love some sideshows on tours where they play the bsides/non-singles but the schedules are usually pretty hectic.

I've been lucky enough of hear a few of the "non-standard set list songs" that I really like. But I'd love some b-sides and other album tracks played too.
But it does take time to "re-learn" them, as such . Especially ones that they probably haven't played since 2000/2001 etc. But we all know how busy this band can be.

From what setlists I've been seeing, imo, they're ok. I see what you mean though, some older, non-single songs would be really good to get thrown into the mix once and a while.
Even though it's not an old song...but I'd like to see Kid get played more often! :p

I'd love them to play Silent Victory, great song to shout to.

Those in Perth were very lucky to see Read About It on the last tour, I would have loved that. Not since the State of Emergency tour has Melbourne seen anything more obscure than We Want More.
And yeah, it does take time for the band to re-learn these great old tracks, hopefully they get some time inbetween their busy schedule to re-learn some for the next tour.

ENGLIIIIISSSSHHH ARRRMMM-EEEY!!! - do it..!
The guys should give it a run for the European tour.. and then bring it back home for us loyal Aus-wegian fans to enjoy! The medley they did on SOE tour was tops..
Another great reason to do so.. aside from the fact that the old tunes rock. Is that Chris is in my opinion a better singer than he was early (not that he was ever bad at all.. jus that he prob used to focus on the guitar more than singing.. did i read that somewhere?).. so it would be good to see the guys give some of the old tunes a once over again.

It's always awesome when they throw something older and less played into a set, but yeah, apart from a few songs, lately it doesn't seem to have happened. I guess festivals definitely aren't the time to be pulling out songs the majority of the public don't know too well. So there's probably a fair chance they may want to play something special on their own tours coming up!

I've been lucky enough of hear a few of the "non-standard set list songs" that I really like.
ditto, I've managed to (by pure luck) make it to some great shows with some awesome setlists. My list of songs I want to hear live still is quite short considering!
Those in Perth were very lucky to see Read About It on the last tour, I would have loved that. Not since the State of Emergency tour has Melbourne seen anything more obscure than We Want More.
yep. Completely agree. I said at the end of the last tour that I was really happy I didn't bother flying over for the Melby shows as the setlist was very dull. I was expecting them to go all out for their home city after hearing other states got Read About It, Listen Up Suzy, etc.

Yes, Yes and Yes. Even on the FHOI tour it was really great to hear Chris singing (yes singing...i seem to remember either Ambs or Arns pointing out that he was singing FHOI and not screaming it on that tour) the oldies, would be great to hear him sing a few more!

Yeah I couldn't agree more with all of this, in the best possible way of course... At BDO yesterday they played 3 of their best live songs first (Raise The Alarm, Prisoner and I think it was Who's Gonna Save Us? maybe not, but i remember thinking it was one of the good live ones) I thought that was an odd move... That said they did play well all through the set but yeah, no surprises
Also I reckon Save The Day would be even better than Prisoner to see live (again)
Colezy
01-27-2009, 10:45 PM
Yep, would love to see Save The Day again!
Maybe with the rarities thingo coming out, we might hear some of those tracks on the tour? I hope so!

I must agree that the same songs are copping a beating. i must add i have some friends who a while back wouldnt ever think of missing a living end gig... suddenly, they decided to sit at home during the white noise tour and yesterday, at the bdo, the same friends hadnt seen tle for 3 years and went to see another band instead who they already saw a month ago.
i spoke to them later on.. they said 10-15 tle gigs and thats enough!! I mean, they may win fans at festivals with what they consider classics but i can personally say i know people whov decided to move on as a result. I guess they need the balance of getting new fans and keeping the old ones happy.
at the last 3 tle gigs ive been to the crowds been BEGGING for uncle harry. I mean, the boys must seriously hate that song to reject our demands!!! chris acknowledged our efforts at shouting for it, even scrunched and threw away the setlist... but still no dice
anyway, it would be nice to raise a ruckus as to get a little hint across, eh!

Ahhh, so you were among the annoying people yelling out for Harry yesterady?!!
It seems to be people who aren't on these forums that love yelling out for it? I know a fair amount of people on here who get pissed when people do it.
I don't get that attraction to the song. It's that I don't like it, but couldn't you yell out for something better like, Carry Me Home, English Army, Hellbound, FHOI etc?

01-27-2009, 11:02 PM

i just think its hard for them because at my first tle gig i wanted to hear all the hits and would be disapointed if they didn't play them, but now ive heard them all a few times i want to hear other stuff
i guess it just needs to be really mixed
i want to see make the call and save the day
also one step behind plus many others

to be honest I only joined in when chris' guitar cut out, they played moment in the sun and wake up and to be honest the boys lost the crowd a bit... they needed SOMETHING to liven them up.
lol i do agree u can get too much of that song, just making the point i guess.

All the songs they've played at BDO ...they're ALL hits that everyone knows whether they like the band or not...why wouldn't you play hits, to a crowd, expecting them to play them.
It'll be the same for overseas...next oz tour they'll pull out some different songs...may not be the entire set but there'll be a few variations..

wow what the hell wizard, you stole my profile picture!!
i was thinking this the other day
another of my favourite bands, Pearl Jam, have such huge variety in their setlists, all the time...they actually do the setlist just a few minutes beforehand usually
TLE are easily capable and apt to really mix it up on stage, and i think they should do so more as well!
B-sides like New Frontier and She's Calling Out, maybe a cover every now and then (Sunday Bloody Sunday, Tainted Love, Jailbreak), old album tracks (loved the idea of Silent Victory, Monday, Reborn, possible even attempt The Room), just something really fresh, because lets face it, there are a hell of a lot of great songs that lie outside of their singles and album catalogue...

Hahaha just given me an idea: someone needs to create a "Random setlist generator". Put in all your songs in your repertoire, the number of units each has sold, age of each of the songs...
Hit "generate" and viola - The perfect mix of singles, album tracks, b-sides and rarities...
...actually thats kind of not a bad idea

TLE have done that on a few occasions, and those gigs were some of their worst. Apparently the boys themselves are quite incapable of creating a set with the right flows and tempos and as a result can sometimes end up with a dud show. (even a setlist full of awesome songs can suck in a whole show context). Rae, i believe usually 'holds their hand' when it comes to setlists!

I don't think Europe will get to see too much variation either.... they havent been to Germany in 8 years, the latest albums haven't been released here. The only songs people know are SS and POS, Roll on probably. RO will probably open the set again.
For what I'm hoping is Read about it or Killing the right, although I highly doubt it, but those are among my favorite of all time. I would love to hear Make the call as well. I've been to 9 shows so far, 8 of them after the release of SOE and most of the sets were the same (except for their spot opening up for Dropkick Murphy's and LTJ, that proved to be a festival set I assume, only singles). I would love some change. Surely I'll get that due to the release of White Noise, but blah.
so long as they play POS at a gig that i'm ACTUALLY THERE FOR! i'll be fine. THEN they can get rid of it :D
i say more Roll On material. Riot on Broadway...blood on your hands...time to spice it up for the older fans.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks the setlists need a revamp.
As mentioned by someone earlier, it'd be great if the boys did a tour like Jebediah did in 2006(?) when they played all rarities.
Or even like the tour Powderfinger did last year where they gave the fans a list of 50 songs (old, new, singles & bsides) and you had to choose 25 and say what gig you were going to. Then they played the 25 with the most votes for each gig. So every concert was different.

Yeah, more Roll On stuff I say. I was really dissapointed that they didn't play ONE song off Roll On at their big day out shows, but...as its been said before, they kind of have to in that enviroment.
I'd love to hear One Said to the Other, and Riot on Broadway.
But at the same time, I'm still not sick of Prisoner. Granted it could become rarer, along with WER.
And for gods sake, play Save The Day! and Reborn.
I think the only way to get a compromise of the hits and rarities that die-hard fans want to hear would be to increase the setlist.
When I saw Foo Fighters, Dave managed to mix it up by playing Watershed.
The other thing that is really cool is when they change the arrangements of songs. I'm sure I'm not the only one that really loved Who's Gonna Save Us on the WN tour.

Ok, I haven't posted on here in donkeys years but this discussion got me thinking and I agree with alot of what everyone's been saying.
I think a good setlist makes a good concert an unforgettable concert but everyone's idea of a 'good setlist' is different as everyone likes different songs.
My favorite concert that I ever went to was The Cure a couple of years ago, mostly because of the incredible setlist they played. The played 39 songs for over 3 hours with 3 encore sets, the last encore set being 7 of the 12 songs from their first album circa 1979. Because they were playing for so long they didn't even have a support. The best thing about the setlist was that my favorite Cure album is Boy's Don't Cry, and they played most of that album. They also included many many more unexpected songs and of all the hundreds of songs they have recorded over their 30 odd years there were only 2 songs that i missed. EVERY other song I could possibly have wanted to hear was played.
I really don't expect this from any band but it made that concert unforgettable, hearing songs played live that I never ever expected to hear. I could rant about that concert for hours.
I know for BDO that TLE are going to be playing hits and songs that everyone knows and I think thats totally fine for a festival, and I'm really looking forward to seeing them tomorrow, but I was a bit surprised to see they're playing NO songs from Roll On.
On a side note, when I saw them on their WN tour in Perth, they played Sum Of Us, which is fast becoming my favorite TLE song of all time, which I never thought I'd hear live, so that was pretty amazing.
And speaking of Pearl Jam, I think they are the most dedicated live band ever, ie, playing 3 nights at one venue with a completely different setlist each night, ultimately playing 105 songs over the 3 nights; professionally recording every concert on one tour, releasing 71 live albums from the tour so everyone who went to a show could have a professional live recording of it; extending their setlist for over an hour, making kanye west wait till 4.30am before he could start his, etc.
AAAAAALLLLLL this said, The Living End are still my favorite band to see live, regardless of what they're playing. I love every song they have recorded and the ones they haven't, they are incredible live musicians and I'll be going to see them every time they're in Perth.
Big J.G
01-31-2009, 08:50 PM

Shadow
02-01-2009, 01:48 AM
So very true. It's hard to mix it up though when there's so many people to please. I can see it from both sides, but I'd love for them to throw in more obscure tracks and maybe even b-sides from time to time. The first SOE tour had the EP Medley and The Room, which was great. So shocked they only did Read About It in Perth and nowhere else on the WN tour though.
I reckon the "Powderfinger" vote-for-your-setlist idea would be incredible. That or a forumer / low key gig where they dust off a setlist which is made up of mostly rare tracks or something. I missed out on the mailing list invite only screening of How To Make An Album And Influence People before SOE came out, it'd be amazing if they did something like that again. Maybe in a few years time they'll be looking at playing older songs that don't get played often / at all.

I just remembered a really bad set list experience.
I'm a huge fan of The Beautiful Girls and I went to see them when they were supporting The Cat Empire last year. I hadn't seen them for quite a while since all their shows had been over 18 and I was underage, and in that time they had released two new albums. If anyone is familiar with them you might know their last album Ziggurats was a total departure from their previous albums in it's sound, and for this concert they played songs exclusively from that album for their set.
I personally love the album, and really wanted to hear the songs live, but a lot of fans really wanted to hear old songs and they played none, so audience response was pretty terrible.
I guess all that really matters is a bit of variety and of the many times I've seen The Living End, they've always delivered that, so really I think we're all pretty lucky to love such a great band!
Another great concept for a concert was one Swedish band In Flames did a while back when they had a new album out. They held two concerts in their hometown for all their hardcore fans, where in one they played their new album in its entirety and in the other concert they just played their old songs. Venue was small and intimate too, making it a great show. They also filmed both sets and released them on live a DVD with another performance at Hammersmith. If TLE did something like that it would be awesome.

Just watching some random Youtube vids in an effort to get motivated for Saturday...
anyway, watching a bunch of vids from the Perth FHOI show and bloody hell that tour had a good setlist.
this Melbourne one was stolen from BennyD's site (http://www11.asphost4free.com/tabloidmagazine/setl.htm)
From Here On In Tour - Melbourne
I Can't Give You What I Haven't Got
From Here On In
Tabloid Magazine
Save the Day
Who's Gonna Save Us
All Torn Down
Prisoner of Society
E-Boogie
Dirty Man (acoustic)
I've Just Seen a Face (acoustic)
So What (acoustic)
Roll On
Pictures in the Mirror
Second Solution
Hold Up
West End Riot
One Said to the Other
Carry Me Home
the big kids show i saw had Prisoner on the Inside instead of i've Just Seen a Face, but either way that whole tour was pretty epic setlist wise. Singles old and new, live favs, an acoustic set with songs not played before and general awesomeness.
maybe cos the boys are stuck in a multiple album deal with dew process they'll put together a best of (as opposed to a singles album) album and do a similar tour.

Interesting forum
I saw them on the SOE tour in Melbourne (Yes i was screaming for uncle harry, Don't pretend you don't either :P )
we got the room and save the day too. As well as Black Cat and the EP Medley.
I agree with suprises though it's always good, I remember at Green Day we got extra encores!, one of them including a cover of I fought the law, with Chris Cheney on guest guitar!)

Agree with you about RAI and KTR. That would be great. I think you'll get 'Make the Call'.
Away from the usual set list I would like to hear 'Jimmy', 'State of Emergency', have 'Blinded' reinstated, 'English Army', 'Don't Shut the Gate', 'Have they Forgotten', Hold Up, 'Staring at the Light' Nothing Lasts for Ever', Waiting for the Silence and 'Sum of Us'. Is that too much to ask?
They could even play 'In the End'. I like that - probably the only one who does.

Geez, you don't want much do you?

No pretend about it. After hearing people call it out constantly all thru a gig, gig after gig after gig, I'd be quite happy if they never play it again.
Besides, it's a Trav song.

i hate it when people scream uncle harry for some reason. shits me to tears, as well as tainted love.
its just like, its a different era song and it was mainly a trav song as may said. its sooo much better when they play something out of the blue.

Amen. There were a few years there after Andy joined where they had me convinced it would never be played live again...and i was happy.

I heard they didn't play Prisoner at the gold coast for BDO.
Yeah we've all heard it about a bazillion times but it's just not TLE without good ole POS.
Doesn't bother me too much though, they played it in Melbourne!
