so i was listening to Roll On the other day, as i do...
and this will probably sound really, really n00bish.
but...Blood On Your Hands
the ridiculous drum fills!
how did i not notice them before?
Andy took over the skins on MA...but Roll On, as well as being a solid rock album, i now see as a testimoy to Travs amazing skills...particularly on that song

It's been years now...
I like listening to Trav play in general but like the Chris and Scott feel, he was just too full on for the band. Sounded like 3 guys soloing at once and just got too messy - at least compared to Andy. I'm a purist when listening to recordings and alot of old TLE tracks I think "they actually decided to use this take??". Was just too messy for a 3 piece band at times. Just gotta compare to old stuff and new stuff.. It's obvious which seems more solid. But some people go for that messy thing... I dont though. However alot of people out there I'm sure would disagree with me, but those are usually people who cant tell if a drummer is playing out of time or not - as long as they hear something fast - that's all they hear and think its cool. Some people simply cannot tell. I can, and yep he did ALOT of stuff but having a busy drummer in a 3 piece band isnt the best idea in my opinion.

as a beginner muso at best...thats really insightful
i never really considered that a 3 piece band requires someone a lot more like Andy...but it does make a lot of sense, now that i think about it.
i prefer Andy's drumming...even if a lot of it sounds simple and withheld...it seems more natural.
i did notice that a lot of Roll On was very messy, but i'm not experienced enough to consider that it might be out of time as well...i guess i still think its great to have those old recordings, i just really like those songs at face value despite everything

With that all being said, with interviews they've done about Roll On, they wanted to make an album that was very complex so i think they were all trying to play more fancy.

I loved the unpredictability of Travis. And the messy complexity often worked. He was definately more suited to the live arena though.

I have to agree, trav wasnt great, in fact andy has kept the band in the shape they are today, i love andys style, and travs was messy, the tempo never kept with trav, it was always up and down........ the drummer of my band has attended some of the workshops that trav has done in newcastle, and he isnt that good of a drummer to be honest.. but yeh andy's much better........

Trav is a great drummer, but frankly doesn't really have the right attitude for a band like TLE.

Yeah same.
The more complex the better!
Though Mastodon take it a bit far . . .

Does anyone know the exact quote when he chipped his tooth on the camera after a gig?
That was gold

Watch the DVD? :p
Something like "that's punk" or something. I don't know. I watched it last week actually.
"Is that a tooth?"
*various swear words*

I'm not sure how people can say things like this, considering he was part of the band during the most influential stage of their career...

I haven't got it :p I watched my friend's one, I intended to buy it when JB had that sale, but I couldn't find it
I think it was something like
"I wish I didn't do that, but it was the punk thing to do so I'm glad I did it"
Was good whatever it was

"Did you cry?"
"Nah...fuckin..I broke the stick and it hit me in the mouth and I just got that fuckin angry that I hit (something something something)...."
I was just watching the DVD, came on here, read this thread and went back through the DVD to find out what he says :p

hahahaha, awesome
he added a great dynamic and i'll definitely continue to appreciate his work, especially on Roll On.
and its like Matt said, he was their drummer during their most successful period

There's an audio interview with Trav and I BELIEVE Scott, while they were recording the S/T album, and they talk about how they started Trav standing up like Joe, and that didn't work, and also go a little deeper to discuss how Trav at first tried a lot of the wild, off-kilter, crazier drum stuff he played in most other bands but how particularly because of the upright bass, and how Scott does a lot of "straight tapping" on it, it sounded quite wrong without the kick drum locked right in with it....I'll dig it up if anyone wants...

Talked to Scott last night, Asked what the last line was in 'blood on your hands'
He had no idea, told me to ask Chris.
He couldnt remember either, But said it was a Midnight Oil Kinda thing.

I think it's one of those 'spur of the moment' things when they're recording - keeping in mind that track was recorded nearly a billion years ago now - could any of you remember something you said off-hand that long ago? :p

"Did somebody (set the time for us) here/yah?" ? It's deff, "Did somebody ... here/yah" but can't quite catch all of what that middle part is. Sounds like there's 6-7 syllables
As for the thread, I actually like the RO album. I think the drums are nice in their complexity, but I like their other albums I have as well. Seems each has their little quirks
