View Full Version : The Living End: misconceptions. A Taylor spelling error of half asleepness Thread
WakeUpToTheManipulation

just now me and another forumer Taylor i think her name is were talking to a school friend of mine who said that TLE were nothing but Emo losers cutting their wrists and whinging,
while we all know they are not an emo band (they have nice wrists btw) has any one else had this misconception?
TaylorLovesChrisCheneyx
08-03-2009, 01:21 AM
I cant believe he would say that!
do you see the black fully eye shadow, do you see cuts on their wrists, do you see them with full black hair? (not saying that its a bad thing to dye your hair black) No.
The Living End are a rockability (however you spell it) band. Not a emo band.
I feel sick right at this very moment.

*Rockabilly.
Bad spelling aside - they're no longer a rockabilly band.

Yeah, but back to the subject Adam haha.
ok rage at me all you want, but it bothers me a lot more when people call TLE rockabilly than it does when they are called emo. :p
sure they have rockabilly roots and influences which is definitely heard in their songs, but it shits me to no end that because they were once described as a rockabilly band now thats all that has stuck and they clearly are not and thats a way bigger misconception in my mind. :blues:

The bigger a band get and the more well known they become the more misconceptions there will be.
Some dude tried to tell me that they were a really lazy band that never toured especially in Australia and they just sat back and relied on record sales, etc. Of course I happily informed him that they had just finished or were part way through a massive tour at the time and that that had not that long before hand been in Tassie too.

haha, i agree. But mainly because i think it's a rediculous thing to call a band emo (or anything emo for that matter) and yeah, the rockabilly thing was so, what, 15 years ago.
But I guess double bass = rockabilly, and eyeliner and coloured hair = emo.
Maybe they should be called emobilly???

I had a eldery lady come up to me when i was at work at library and say to me "Excuse me dear, are you an emo?"
Sarah
08-03-2009, 03:25 AM
haha. what did you tell her?
A girl I work with calls herself emo and has a hard time with the fact there is no name for the rest of us (non-?)emos(?). And if a customer comes in with either black clothes or black hair she'll often wonder aloud if they are perhaps half-emo.
She's a sweety, but she makes me laugh sometimes.

Hahahaha that's hilarious.
But anyway, on the subject, why do people seem to want to call every single band emo?? It really gets on my nerves how people throw the emo label around so much and have no idea what it actually means, just use it to describe any band they dislike. But they must be mentally challenged if they dislike TLE anyway, so I should probably take pity on the poor fools.

i've laughed out loud at about 4 posts in this thread
firstly, those who call TLE an 'emo' band clearly have absolutely nil knowledge of the band, and just rock music in general. these people i will generally attack on sight, letting loose with abuse and insights as to where i think they should go.
also, to those who say they are rockabilly...that's not correct either.
even their first album, which was the closest, would be defined as rockabilly meets punk, as the punk influences (i believe) shine through stronger than the rockabilly roots
they have a love for rockabilly clearly, but their music has come to encapsulate rockabilly, rock and roll, punk rock, pop rock, alternative rock, hard rock, pub rock, and maybe a smidge of new wave.
at then end of the day, they're so hard to place or give fewer than 4 genre labels to, because they're just so diverse. i find myself growing weary of discussing where they 'fit'.
lastly, TLE are one of the most honest, hard-working, perpetually touring bands around.
i tend to believe that playing live is what they're in the industry for foremost...so to all those complete idiots saying they're 'lazy'...well, refer to my first point :)

I find my own jokes highly amusing. And after paulvroc listed all of those genres, I have came to the conclusion that TLE are an 'everything' band.

As what Chris said in an interview (I forget, it might have been in iTunes Originals). When you hear the name The Living End, you just don't know what it could mean. It can fit any type of music for a band name. It could be a Metal band, it could be Emo, it could be Soul, it could even be Rock.
But we all know who The Living End are and what their music is.
ROCK!

The Living End have never been rockabilly as far as i can see. I'm pretty sure they ditched the Rockabilly when they ditched their old name. I agree that the early stuff was unashamedly influenced by rockabilly, and i think the media coined the term "Punkabilly" for Self Titled, which is probably the closest to a decent call the media has ever had when it comes to postboxing a band, but as they've grown they've torn off so many layers, that you can almost point to every album as a different genre.
I just wish genre labelling didn't exist, and we could go back to a three pronged system:
The Living End are a great band.
The Living End are an ok band, I like some songs.
The Living End don't do it for me i'm afraid.
My advice is stop being effected by other peoples ignorance.

Easier said than done I'm afraid. If people around here are anything like me, I have this deep set need to correct people's misconceptions. I can't stand it when people have completely the wrong idea about something, and their opinion is usally based neither in logic or fact, but rather some ridiculous assumption they made based on nothing. Stupidity vexes me, and I feel the need to do whatever I can to correct it.

I'm exactly the same way!!! I've been called immature because I spend forever trying to convince people that their completely wrong opinions are in fact completely wrong.

i'm the exact same
