HOME-GROWN rockers Scott Owen and Chris Cheney from The Living End have given their support to Victoria's hardworking emergency services volunteers.

A statewide campaign to recognise the vital efforts of the CFA, SES and Life Saving Victoria is being launched this weekend.

Recently home from a British tour, Owen and Cheney are among prominent Victorian ambassadors backing the Volunteers for Victoria campaign.

The Living End performed at Kinglake, Yea and Alexandra in the wake of the Black Saturday fires.

Bassist Owen said the experience left him in awe of CFA volunteers.

"It was a major eye-opener to see the spirit and the soul of these guys and their families," he said.

"We got to talk to a lot of them and some of them told us some pretty horrific tales of the things they had seen and been through. These are normal people who save people from potentially life threatening situations."

The Sunday Herald Sun is supporting Volunteers for Victoria, which acknowledges the 84,000 people who give their time to the CFA, SES, Life Saving Victoria and other emergency services organisations.

Actor Vince Colosimo and former North Melbourne champion Glenn Archer together with Cricket Victoria, the Quicksilver Foundation and Victorian Employers' Chamber of Commerce and Industry have also come on board as ambassadors of the program.

Archer said he felt grateful to the volunteers.

"I just think it's a really honourable to give up your time to help others," he said. "With Black Saturday, you look at the tireless work those people put in and putting their own lives at risk to help others.

"Seeing some of the things they would have seen up there, I just really take my hat off to them."

The ambassadors will be posting messages on the Volunteers for Victoria website and visiting local CFA brigades and SES units.

To show your support for our emergency service volunteers, post a message on the campaign website, www.volunteer.vic.gov.au, or sms Vols and your message to 0488 505 050.

Good on em.

Always good to see people in positions of power putting it to good use.
We'll need the volunteers this summer too . . .
