View Full Version : MODERN ARTillery songs live??

When a band is touring in support of an album, they inevitably play more songs from that particular record than they will later on; even "deep album tracks" will often get a go. But by the time a new record(s) has been released and/or time has elapsed, generally only the singles/bigger hits from the album remain in the setlist...for example, on bootlegs from the S/T era you'll find some sweet performances of Have They Forgotten/Fly Away/Lone Ranger(!)...but Roll On and beyond, tunes like that don't get dusted off.
I understand that thats just the way it works, but I've noticed in particular that the Modern Artillery album seems to have the fewest of its songs performed live, and the ones that were played early on also disappeared the quickest from the setlists. The large majority of the sets I've seen since then ONLY contain Who's Gonna Save Us from MA.
Especially since (even by the band's admission) the album was hindered largely by the production and not the songs themselves, I'd really like to see at least a few of the songs brought into the live rotation where they belong...what do you guys think??? Wouldn't it be cool to again get to see tunes like Hold Up (with Chris/Andy call and answer bridge), What Would You Do, or Short Notice up close and personal? They seem to beg to be belted out in a raucous live environment...ok, maybe hoping for Short Notice is a stretch, but Hold Up was briefly a live staple and WWYD? was a popular a-side.
Also, speaking of tracks from the album that were played but were quickly declared MIA from setlists, does anyone know of any bootlegs etc. of the band playing Maitland Street (my personal album fav), Jimmy, or/and the above mentioned Short Notice?? I'd be much obliged, even if someone could just confirm that some recorded copy exists. Tracks 7, 9, 11, and 12 have never been touched live, and the rest other than those three have at least one commonly findable live copy.
Sorry if this is a boring ramble... :)

Glad somebody shares my enthusiasm!! I agree, even just any one track thrown into the set to mix things up would put a deranged unmovable grin on my face.
And as for End of the World being back in the sets...thats awesome!! That song took a while to grow on me, I felt at first like it was Living End TRYING to sound like Living End, almost like a self-parody....still kinda feel that way, but in a GOOD way!
EDIT: I caught the VERY end of Maitland Street once, the Aussie Invasion tour back in 03 did two nights back to back at Irving Plaza in New York City, I had tickets for the first day, and managed to get in at the last minute for the second night through someone who had a pass. TLE went on first, so they had already played a bunch of tunes when I strolled in...It took a while for it to register that they were ACTUALLY playing Maitland Street...they threw it in to change the set a little since it was 2 nights in a row, same place. I should've taped!!!!

Surely they've played So What? live... I seem to remember a video floating around on YouTube. They got an extra guitar player out on stage to do it, too.
TBH, In The End would be pretty cool live. I didn't know they'd played Maitland, or Short Notice, though!

I had a low-quality (i think a 'hold shitty tape recorder over head in crowd' bootleg) mp3 of Short Notice live from when they were touring MA, but it must've gotten deleted/lost...I didn't know what I had! :( It sounded off without that electronic glitch-beat intro, but I'm sure it would've been worked out live if they had played it a bit more, like some other tunes that fumbled at their debuts (Tabloid Magazine comes to mind).
And Shadow, I think you're right about "So What"...I think I remember a video on Youtube or somewhere, it was filmed during SOE support I think, but it was a very short, totally distorted camera clip composed of fuzz, semi-vocals, and crowd noise. Still better than nothing...I'm gonna try and find it right now.
EDIT: Here you go http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0_USiq7qCJU
Another Edit: Btw, how do you change it when you post a link so that, for example, it would just say 'So What' live instead of saying www. blah blah dee blah, but still take you to the same place??

Pretty Positive so what has been pl;ayed live.
I think it was played on the FHOI tour, very positive of this have a recording somewhere, has a sweet as intro, great great song very country very differernt but fantastic.
And i too love maitland street, but im sure it has only been played live on the rarest occasions.
Would love some bootles but chances are slim i feel.

I know for sure that Jimmy was played because there is a vid of it on youtube under sarah's account "bobrox" or something like that.
They played The Room during their All States of Emergency tour, it wasn't on Festival Hall was because it was cut from the dvd, along with We Want More and Tabloid Magazine.

Speaking of The Room live, I have a recording... I recorded it onto cassette tape / walkman at the first Melbourne show of the SOE tour and while it's obviously not going to be soundboard quality, it's definitely listenable. I'm just not sure whether or not I should share it given that it was pulled from the DVD, but I'd love to be able to. There's extra soloing over the end, as opposed to the album version fade-out.

You're allowed to share any bootlegs, as long as the song has been released so you can buy it.
And you can't share any songs that haven't been released.
So, The Room has been released on a CD, you can share any bootleg.

When Maitland Street was played at Offshore, it was still the work-in-progress middle section of "Silent Victory"...it's sort of become the holy grail of TLE bootlegs for me, I'd love to hear it, but I'm sure no recording exists. Apparently it was what became the chorus section of Maitland, used in Silent Victory...the verses were written later, post 9/11, as that was the inspiration.

Not necessarily.
It wont change a thing in the present, that was the past, go back in the past it will change for them, not us.
Wild Turkey
09-18-2009, 06:01 PM
But It could still change for us, like if they mess something up back then but then we wouldnt even know, unless it happens from here on in, if it happened 100 years ago it would just be regular reality for us now, but if something happens tommorow in our time which really is years and years ahead in the linear time line then an instant change could be intermediat, thus us knowing and realising the sudden effects.

Delayed post reaction, but "Before The Eyes Of The Sun" was actually a different song, it was played live a few times in 1999, and then abandoned. On my old, old computer I had an audience tape recording of it that someone was kind enough to send me, but unfortunately I lost it...it was of extremely low quality (SOUND quality that is ;) ) but it'd still be cool to have. I just remember the chorus going "Before the eyes!! *bum bum* Before the eyes! *bum bum* before the eyesssss of the sunnnnnn"...descriptive, I know, eh??

Hold Up was especially cool live, cos it was the closest Andy came to having a Travis-esque "oi I'm a fookin' right awesome skin-thumper eh? now watch me spontaneously burst into drum solo" moment, when him and Chris did the call and answer middle section. My only complaint was that at the end of the middle bit, when they go "luck came undone (DONE!!) as we jumped the gun (GUN!!)" they didn't do the Scott Owen-yelling-and-sounding-like-4-dudes-at-once backups, they just left a gap. Nitpicker, though, eh?
edit: Whilst (again) on the topic of older live songs, was From Here On In ever played again after BDO 2003?? The whole thing, not as part of the medley (which I don't believe it was part of). It was great to hear someone play the beat in the proper syncopation.

Easily one of if not THE top song on MA.
Putting You Down just sounds like reheated Santana riffs to me, not so big on it. Plus Chris calls it a "moh-bye-uhl phone" in the lyrics instead of a cell phone (as all UK folks do I imagine) which is just silly to me.

10-29-2009, 09:52 AM
Well, actually, even just using the phrase "up the" (instead of at the, or up AT the) to describe someone's location is a UK thing that would confuse a lot of Yanks...being an Anglophile I'm familiar with it. Even though I know it's not true, I always liked to distinguish between "bars" and "pubs" by thinking of a pub as a place that in addition to alcohol, offers a food menu with actual meals you could order rather than just peanuts, a restaurant type of feel, and a more socially relaxed atmosphere, pool tables, etc. A bar in my head is JUST drinks hard and fast, possibly with annoying flashing lights and dance music and people who can't hold their alcohol.
Also, I do remember a long period where people (I'm sure there are still some out there) were convinced that the chorus of Uncle Harry scolded him for "pissing in the barrrrr" rather than the bath. Eh??!!

It'd throw you off because it sounds like some sort of brawl at a pub at the start of the song, but yeah, I don't think Pissing In The Bar has anything to do with Harry Losing his Mind, not Pissing in a Bar is like going on YouTube and Not Watching Videos. It's the main reason to visit such things, but it is not the only reason. I go on YouTube to watch videos mainly, but also to view comments and messages.
Pissing is a term for Drinkin isn't it? I might get some sort of confusion, like you are "on the piss" so you are "pissing"
carrymehomestead
10-30-2009, 04:56 PM
Wait....is it??!!! That would change everything!!! I always thought they were basically saying he gets so drunk he can't control his bodily functions, resulting in him uncontrollably urinating in the bath. But if by "pissing" they mean drinking, I guess it could be hes even got a drink in his hand when hes in the tub, hes "pissing in the bath" but that would seem like a silly thing for people to get so mad at him for.

carrymehomestead

Oh mannn The Fifth Element!! I always thought that Alien opera sequence was one of the funniest parts of the movie, especially because it definitely wasn't intended to be humorous. It starts all serious and dramatic and then out of nowhere they serve up a heaping helping of cinematic ".....wtf???!!" Still can't top the part right after that which is basically just Chris Tucker wailing like a frightened 6 year old girl for 3 minutes. Ah, crappy movie memories.
As for wondering about MA songs at Stonefest, I don't know exactly what it is, but I'm gonna take a stab in the dark here and assume it's a festival of some sort. If that is in fact the case, festival sets always some degree more generic, because they're playing to a broader audience who may not be as familiar with their back catalog...I'd expect Who's Gonna Save Us, and MAYBE one other tune, likely either End Of The World, Hold Up, or Tabloid Magazine (although what from I understand the latter hasn't been dusted off in some time, it used to be the expected 'not WGSU' song from MA to hear live.
