View Full Version : Favorite TLE B-side

It's always been my opinion that The Living End are one of those rare bands whose b-sides (for the kiddies out there: those are tracks that don't make the albums, but are still released on singles and things like the White Noise bonus disc that came out not too long ago! yay!!) are often times just as good, if not arguably better, than the tracks that 'make the cut'. Especially in times where the band is sort of in-between records, and I've played out the albums too much, I find it very interesting to go back and listen to some of their under the radar stuff, as a lot of the time those tracks are where they are experimenting a bit and mucking around with new sounds you might not expect from them.
I could ramble on about this for a while, and I apologize for the long-winded nature of the above paragraph (a bit drunk at the moment), but to cut the b.s. and get to the point...
What is your favorite....
Actually, better yet..what are your TOP THREE Living End b-sides??
(I do include covers, at least ones officially released in some fashion)
As for me:
1. Homestead (who would've guessed from my handle?)
2. There Is No Radio
3. Sunday Bloody Sunday (studio version)

New Frontier!
God I love New Frontier.
haha oh, we know :p
here we go...something new about B-sides, finally!
i'm a massive fan of their rarer tracks as well...my favourites are as follows:
1. She's Calling Out
2. Tainted Love
3. New Frontier
4. Live To Love
also...my favourite instrumental is Ape Face, and my favourite cover, Sunday Bloody Sunday because of its amazing feeling :)

I always forget about apeface!! Great track, sort of harkens back to their older, rockier days.
I was ultimately kind of disappointed with most of the 'bonus disc' songs, especially because I was expecting something AMAZING because it was a WHOLE DISC of b-sides and I had very very rarely been disappointed in the past. Although "New Trend" is great, could've been a Modern Artillery outtake, which is kind of how the whole disc sounds to me in general.
Man, looking over my b-side archive there's a lot of tracks, both older and recent, that I tend to forget about....Resurrection Shuffle, CIA...and remember, to us Americans, Sleep On It is technically a b-side..
Although I guess that makes Strange (S/T version) a b-side to you Aussies...suuucccch a better version
Afterthought edit: I like that there are two distinct versions of Sunday Bloody Sunday, the studio version, with more machine-like drums and the traditional Living End "Scott Owen's backups sound like 20 guys chanting" in the chorus, and the live version which is less atmospheric and more raw rockin', with a melodic high-octave harmony in the chorus instead.

i've always loved Scotts backing vocals to death, gives the band such a good solid, energetic punk feel.
and yes...Apeface is a favourite.
i'm listening to Down To The Wire right now...and remembering how much i love it
although not technically a 'B-side', is it?

Listen up suzy. by a mile. that song should of made the album, it was better than most songs on white noise, yet it didnt make the cut.
In no order my 3 picks:
I Get A Kick Out Of You
Lone Ranger
Mispent Youth (Live Version)

i think the main reason Suzy was left off WN was that musically and thematically, it would have stood out like a sore thumb.
lyrical content and even...just the feel of the song wouldn't have fit i don't think.
theres a lot of TLE songs like that, because they're obviously very diverse and creative, but can't just have each album bouncing all over the place...
and for this same reason...i can't for the life of me find one good reason why She's Calling Out was left off the album!
it fits in with the whole concept of 'white noise'...addressing the problems of society and the modern world...and musically, its pretty heavy, matching the other songs on there.
a question i would love to ask Chris one day...

I believe it was simply because the song wasn't that great. That is one reason why the band leave out songs.
I don't really like She's Calling Out (especially intro!). It it was released on White Noise then it would be one of my less favorite tracks off the album. Listen Up Suzy sounds better to me, but I agree that it doesn't fits in...

I wish it was a top 5... I can't give an order...
New Frontier
Live it up
Beware the moon

this list would probably change if i gave them all a listen again. I'm sure I fogrot to think about some.
As I've said before, I think the white noise B sides are the best collection of b sides from an album.

1. Rising Sun (if this does count)
2. Beware The Moon
3. Listen Up Suzie
Counting the whole Rarities album as b-sides there would be definitely Faith on my list. It is just the most powerful song ever written ;)

I love that one too. I wonder if it's possible to ever hear it live? I'll dare to ask for it, that's for sure!

I'm sure I've seen a video on YT of TLE as The Longnecks performing that one. It was very bad quality though...

Yes they surely performed it as Longnecks but I'm talking about their regular TLE shows. Lilke...some concerts in Germany next month
I'd go out of my head if I heard it!

Note to Living End: MIX UP YOUR SETLISTS!!! EVERYBODY WANTS IT!!!
You don't have to play All Torn Down, West End Riot, Roll On, etc. night after night after night..
Throw in a b-side....an EP song....some of the NEVER PLAYED Roll On tracks I.E. Killing The Right (voted best track 12 by a mile i might add) Astoria Paranoia, Blood On Your Hands...
That said, there's not a snowballs chance in hell you'll hear Faith. TLE take pride in being a tight live band, so they won't pull out anything they haven't rehearsed at least a few times...at least, thats what they told me when I asked for "Don't Shut The Gate" before a show..

i'm not so sure about Faith...seems almost to be tongue-in-cheek to me...
i like it though ;)
but yes! i'm definitely for mixing up setlists
one of my other favourite bands, pearl jam, are known for mixing up setlists all the time...theres always heaps of diversity.
as for omitting All Torn Down and West End Riot...that i wouldn't encourage, as i could probably see them about 50 times live before i get sick of them

I know what you mean, I just chose them as random examples...them, among several other songs, have been in EVERY SINGLE TLE SETLIST since 1998...I just think it's okay to take some of e'm out...as they did with Prisoner of Society.

I only heard them once and i can't remember the night anymore so i don't really care what they play atm.
I do care because I might see them 6 times during 2 weeks so it will be a bit boring to hear POS, Second Solution and Roll On every night. :innocent: I'm not complaining though. But it's unfair to leave behind all amazing stuff off SOE! If only they were able to play Wake Up or We Want More...or Til The End! :D Same with Killing the Right, as already been said - voted best track 12. :ermm: And then Hold Up, such an awesome sounding live song.
They may start rehearsing already :flowers: haha.

I'm for mixing up setlists, Dream Theatre are a band that mix up their setlists all the time, so every show is a unique experience, but they aren't really a radio friendly band I must say. I am sick of those singles we hear every night, the only song I want kept from the first album days would be All Torn Down, all of the others I don't really care for.

Our Lady Peace usually change their setlist every show. I saw them this summer and they played the most obscure song off of their first record that I never expected to hear. It was great! Cannot wait to see their pretty faces again.
Yana, lets make a setlist for the boys, and see if they do anything with it

haha a few of my posts mention Metallica :|
but they are a band that mix up their setlists really well. Like no show has had the same setlist for something like 5 years or so, so thats like over 350? shows in a row.

that's something i've been thinking about for a while now! not a setlist but request for couple of our favorite songs they rarely play :p Here's my list:
We Want More
Hold Up
Wake Up
Read About It (I believe they played this one during WN tour, didn't they?)
Carry me Home
Waiting for the Silence (pity it never been played at all 3 shows I've been to)
Killing the Right
Faith
It's unlikely that most of them can be played but...

Well, I wouldn't call We want more, Hold Up, Wake Up and Carry me Home rare songs. They've been played reguraly at the shows I went in the last 2 years.
I also had the luck that whenever I saw more than one concert in a row that they changed one or two songs the next evening, so I don't will blame them for their setlists. ;)

Oh, but The Living End have been changing it up a little bit recently. On the White Noise Tour anyway i think. Well changing it up for them anyway, at Brisbane we got Waiting For The Silence, Sum of Us, Uncle Harry and End of the World. Didn't think we were gonna get any of them.
EDIT: But also i guess thats for Aussie audiences who are more familiar with their stuff.

Yes they're not rare for many people except me that's why I want to hear them :)
I was "lucky" to hear absolutely same songs two nights in a row in Amsterdam and Cologne.
me: show seemed shorter tonight, did you play less songs?
Chris: no, we just played them faster...

can't BELIEVE they played Read About It!!! AND that there's absolutely NO document of it (video, audio, etc...). I think it was only at that one show, right?? Another great Roll On track unjustly forgotten in the sands of time.
At least that means the current incarnation of the band KNOWS how to play the song, they've rehearsed it...believe it or not, that's usually the biggest obstacle in a band mixing up sets/playing older songs. Either the entire band has forgotten the song because it's been too long, or there's a new(er) member who may not have ever played it. When I've requested songs before gigs that wouldn't have usually been in the set, Chris has always been very polite but honest..."Well, maybe if we get another soundcheck, we could, erm..try it out, but.."
But yeah. READ ABOUT IT!!
I also like to pretend that he says "GODDD CREATESSSS THE MADNESSS!!" in that one part.
Just realized how off topic I am, since this is a b-side thread. That I started. God how I love to digress...
