Chris, Andy and Scotty were on the 'Under the Influence' section of Mike Davies's Punk Rock Show on BBC Radio One last night, one favourite song each, what did they choose? You can listen again for a week anywhere in the world, follow the link below....

Scott - Midnight Oil (can't remember song title)
Oh these young people.
'The Power and The Passion'.
Scotty's tattoo of a hand is the logo for Midnight Oil's Sprint Records (I know you all mostly know this). The Oils are my favourite band too and probably why I ever looked up The Living End (More socially conscious Aussie Rock). TLE and the Oils do cross over a bit, though not hugely. 'Killing The Right' is a bit Oily for example.
I first saw The Oils in 1982 (Yes I am a bit of a fossil) supporting Stiff Little Fingers and saw them loads of times more. I'd find it hard to believe that anyone who likes TLE wouldn't also like Midnight Oil.
It was weird for me being in Australia last year as Peter Garrett (Oils frontman turned Government minister) was getting a torrid time off every dullard comic on TV. Not that he shouldn't have seen it coming and didn't deserve at least some of it, but it was odd.
I still have some faith in PG, but he is playing a very long game, is perhaps the politest way of putting it.

He's certainly in a spot of bother at the moment!
I've ashamed to say that I'm one of those people that only knows the radio play Oil's songs.. Blue Sky Mine, Power and Passion etc.. Is there a particular album you'd recommend for me to cut my teeth on?

Well I like them all, so it might depend on what sounds you like, Blue Sky Mining and Capricornia are more melodic, Place Without a Postcard and 10-1 rockier. Red Sails in the Sunset is plain odd and Diesel and Dust just classic.
I've always loved the romanticised view of Australia that alternates with the exposure of its underbelly. It depends whether you can take that from the voice of Peter Garrett right now. At this moment I love Capricornia.
Still one things for sure, their albums must be pretty cheap in the shops just now.

YOU MISSED MY FAVOURITE!! HEAD INJURIES!!
pure rock filth there, 'stand in line' is absolute gold, one of my fave songs of all time. 10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1 is thier 'crossover' album into a more mainstream audience and has alot more accessable music on it, great place to start possibly? there really is some great stuff on there too.
ooo and live on goat island is awesommeenneeessss :D
that hand that scottys got tattoo'd is also the symbol for 'hates a rage', a group that the oils had alot to do with (cant remember the full deal on how they are related to them) which is against all forms of intolerance and discrimination.
also, the 'armastice day' ep is absolute gold. ive got the vinyl, quite possibly my prized possision in life! stand in line live... god! and armistace day is just godlike too. epic epic song.
and im sorry, peter garret should never have got into politics. he is going againt every single thing that he sang about. if he were 18 again, he would be writings songs about himself right now. dickhead as far as im concerned.

I love the Oils too, grew up with most of their albums. I reckon 10-1 is a good one to start with but that's probably personal preference more than anything. One of my favourite Oils songs is Redneck Wonderland though.
Then there's the classics. King of the Mountain is very sentimental to me.
mmm redneck wonderland is ok, but i like their earlier, more raw stuff. thats where the moneys at nicko! especially if your after some awesome guitar and AMAZING basswork ;)

Good post, Head Injuries is a great album and I didn't know the 'Hate a Rage' thing so thanks.
Armistice Day is a fantastic song - I'd love to hear TLE cover it.
I think you are dead right, PG is the guy he would once have been protesting against. He would do alot better if he fessed that up and said for instance that he could never of imagined that he would be approving Uranium mining, but he feels that Global Warming is a bigger issue than it.
His previous forthrightness makes him a sitting target, which must have been very useful for Robo-kev as he gets a lightning-rod to take the heat of him for those same decisions - though perhaps not today.
Still from what I read PG's political career may not have much longevity, so we all may get to see the Oils again one day.
hahaha exactly, fingers crossed this is his downfall and he goes back to the oils.
...and then release a new album about how much PG hates himself ...

in Germany I've heard Chris playing Rumble and 2nd Solution on his Black Falcon. Side by side they sounded so similar, I hadn't noticed it until then. :) pity he didn't sing along, though! :D
