What's a little blood poisoning between friends?
My mum dragged me off to a art and craft class to get me out of the house. After much frustration and complaining, the instructer handed me a vinyl record and a clock thing. I made a masterpiece! :p

Not a bad idea.

Definetly not a waste.

ahhh - and now the big is better line falls nicely into place... :p
yeah - work porn is the best to download - i just tell the boss that the computer has a virus after i've put it on to a CD (chances are it's true anyway... those porn sites are as unsafe as some of the positions i've seen them in... :O ) and hey presto...

10-18-2006, 12:04 AM
6B's are pretty soft Mel. Give it a go and tell me what you think. I hated using them in art as they broke too easily.
Maybe it's just me?! haha
By the way, great drawing. He does need a little bit more hair, but you said you did it quickly so didn't want to be overly critical!
But for a quick drawing it's great!

Ok, I use a mechanical pencil because it's always sharp, and pencil shavings are annoying :p
The drawing's still getting touched up, so yeah. It might look a bit better in a few days.

Pffft, mecahincal pencils always break. You should use a 2B. They draw heaps better. I should really chuck up a few of the drawings i've been doin on the guitar/bass/snare that i seem to draw everywhere these days.

nice drawing mel - you caputred something about him in that work - even if it was only quick and only using a pacer! (O Noez!)
i would only suggest that perhaps you keep a look out for the details in the eye (if of course the shot you're drawing from has enough of said detail...)

Haha, not sure if you've started a thread yet (haven't checked) but you should! :p
I won't cover up the fact that I've seen and watched porn - there's no point, we're all bound to see or watch some at least once in our lives!
Come to think of it, I remember last year a heap of friends made fun of me because I started talking about how one night I was talking to/watching a male friend on a web cam via msn while he was away on exchange overseas. It was all innocent - he had the webcam going cause it had been 2 months since we'd seen each other.
Anyway, my mate Simon heard the last part of the conversation at school and from then on, I was known as the porn-watching-web-cam chick (or something to that effect!)

nice drawing mel - you caputred something about him in that work - even if it was only quick and only using a pacer! (O Noez!)
There was this guy at my school who used to draw during art class using only a pacer. The stuff he'd come up with in a lesson, just off the top of his head was amazing. Most of it you could probably pass off as a black and white photo such was the depth he got with shading and stuff. This proves that technique plays a majority of the role when it comes to how a drawing will look...you can't just get "the right tool" and come up with a masterpiece.
Nicole - Thread on the way!

Tempting...veeeeery tempting! :p
well glenn - you can get different grade lead for pacers too - so makes sense with the depth thing!
i know you can get some amazing deawings with pacers - i know a lot of people that use them for the same reason as Mel said before - but even so - there are some things that just aren't the same...
not that it matters at all in the slightest - pacers are exceptional for really fine details - i think i just love my 4B too much to retire it! :p
anyone tried coloured pacers on this board - i'd be interested to see the results of those things... the idea blows my brains away
Mel - you're always welcome to disregard or use any suggestions i make in equal measure - i have spent so much time in an art critique frame of mind that i kinda spurt out all this... 'advice'?

damn! We don't find a word "pacer" in our dictionary!!! What is it? We are artists and this is really interesting? Maybe we have it but don't know it it pacer?
we have a question to Mel and others who post their drawings:
- are you study in some art schools? If do it will be interesting to know how there is in AU?
We studied in childrens art school in Chernivtcy from 11 to 14 and it was very strong school. We have our working studio, teacher who vas a chief of those school, exhibitions, "plane-airs" and a lot of fun! :)
mel_bound
10-18-2006, 10:36 PM
this is a pacer/mechanical pencil :)
http://www.business-supply.com/product_images/image/EB030562_ez-2-mechanical-pencil-0-7-millimeter-black.gif
As for studying art in school, it was very structured, and we were told to either draw something, or make something out of wood, not much freedom. But I guess it gave everyone some basic skills with tools. But I didn't enjoy it as much as doing some drawings at home!
My art classes are rediculously stupid. I'm terrible at drawing pictures and none of my art teachers ever actually showed me how to draw, or even gave me tips to improve my drawing. It was simply a matter of "Get out your sketchbook and draw this.."
Now I'm going to go ahead and post the only drawing I've ever done that actually looks good. Hoorah for copying!

The Dying Start

THIS IS NOT ME!
But as i mentioned before, about the lad who did a4 pacer drawings in every 50 minute art class. I'm not in the same room as the scanner, so i couldn't scan them, but i took a couple of crappy photos of the yearbook.
http://www.23rdprecinct.net/Hotlinks/Art_BD_01.jpg
Pacer, and the little eraser doover that you get on the end. I think he might have used a bigger art eraser for some of the BIIIIIG faded bits. I remember sitting next to him when he drew this. 50 minutes it took him. Maybe a bit less. And it wasn't copied...this is out of his mind....he always drew these kinda mythical battle type scenes.
http://www.23rdprecinct.net/Hotlinks/Art_BD_02.jpg
This was his major art piece. It's black and white in the book but it's actually a brown/red colour. He didn't do this with pacer, but with conte, or a similar brittle pastel type thing. The two sections are huge...when they're on the wall like that they'd be 7 foot high at least. I think this took him a bit longer than 50 mins! And it WAS based on just a random clipping from a bodybuilder mag.

I call you "too safe" because your pictures seem to tell me that you're too afraid to press down hard with your pencil. Everything is just this one constant light grey. Where's the contrast? It'd look heaps more realistic if you had the whole scale in there, from white to greys to pitch black. There are a lot of parts in that picture that could do with being at least 10 shades darker.

Mel, like Chloe said, your drawings of Andy would look great with more detail and all, but I love how you have managed to draw it fairly simply (not too much shading or bold outlines), yet you have still managed to have the end result looking alot like the actual photo.

Mel, like Chloe said, your drawings of Andy would look great with more detail and all, but I love how you have managed to draw it fairly simply (not too much shading or bold outlines), yet you have still managed to have the end result looking alot like the actual photo.
Do you get what I mean?? I have no knowledge of art terminology! :p
hehe I don't know many arty words either, but I do understand :D Thank you!
I'm still pretty new to drawing like this, so.. I'm still not super-photo-realistic, but I do like to think people can recognise what I'm drawing!
Only 'cause it's normally Andy Mel. :p

Well, like the Madtwins said before..
Don't think proffesionlism is main here - feelings is more. We made a Chris's portrait because we like him more that others. We can do Andy's one but this is not will be so interesting for us, that will not keep us on our seats while we work.
except swap the names around :p
Yeah, I guess it's just an Andy obssesion-nistic thing.
Is obssesion-nistic a word?

Uhh, no. I NEVER said anything about detail. The amount of detail in Mel's drawings is fine. I even LIKE the way Andy's drumsticks are no more than two thick white flashes of light -- it shows movement. Sometimes less detail is a good thing. What *I* was talking about was her shading and the fact that there is no contrast. I recall the wording I used was "one constant light grey".
Colezy
10-21-2006, 01:25 PM
Yeah, yeah, well to me shading is a form of detail, as it brings more to a drawing.
Like I said, my knowledge of art could fit on to the top of a pin head. Mel knew what you said, so she knew what I was talking about. :) I'm just here to admire the people that can draw, unlike myself, who is still at the stage of stickmen.
Chloe
10-21-2006, 01:38 PM
Well anyway, I took the liberty of playing with the brightness and contrast feature in Photoshop to give you an idea of what it was I was trying to get across. Take from it what you will.

I know what you're getting at. I love that Andy and several drums looks better now, but in doing so, you've lost detail on the bass drum. The thingo that hits the front of it (coming from the right in the original) has gone, same with the legs of the drums. But that may just be from using photoshop, I don't know.
I say that we all just give Mel time and she'll develop her drawing techniques as she progresses! :)
(I hope it hasn't sounded like I am trying to have a go at you throughout this thread?!)
Julian
10-21-2006, 01:50 PM
The drawing that Chloe posted was just photoshopped. The detail on the bass drum can still be kept with different shading.
I say that we all just give Mel time and she'll develop her drawing techniques as she progresses!
It was great advice and i'm sure Mel took something from it

Yes, that's why I said the edit was "to give you an idea" of what I was trying to get at, as opposed to "this is exactly what it should look like".
Of course fiddling with the brightness/contrast effect for barely 10 seconds like I did was clearly going to drown out some of the already-dark detail.

I like what you have done except i'd say that i lik ethe originall more because in the photoshopped one, a lot of the detail is lost (and the mike dissapeared from in front of the bass drum). Anyway, good work anyway Chloe.

What I'm working on isn't a TLE drawing, though, it's something I was doing for myself and a friend, I cracked the shits with it when one area wasn't working out. So yeah, doesn't really belong here...

i love this thread - not only is it about art and the various art forms of art, it's a nice tribute to the boys AND it's also had some very healthy art discussion - who knew conversations could get me so mentally stimulated!
i don't want to sound like a wanker or anything but i really appreciate everything about this thread and i love that people have posted their work.
there's something really satisfying seeiing someone's talents (and a little piece of themselves) up here on display for public discussion.

Here is my second attempt at art, both have been TLE. The other one was of the IFYOG cd artwork (posted on the old, old forum).
I started this about 10 mins ago but can't be bothered doing much more tonight. I pretty much suck at art - my teacher failed me in grade 7! :p The thing I know I will find hard with this is that I can't draw human features very well, so Chris's arm may end up looking odd!
Anyway, here it is so far, in it's very rough stage :)

oooh - Rhiannon - do you have any TLE icons - like so that i could scab some for my desktop at home? :p
the wallpaper is pretty neat too - i like the fact that it's not too busy and that you can add icons to your desktop without it looking too cluttered (or without them interfering with the picture in the background!)
colezy - can't wait to see what you do with your drawing

Not just yet. I've been intending to. I capped the hell out of the LAFH DVD for that purpose, but I then I started putting caps together to make animated stuff. It took a riduculous amount of time, I haven't done them all yet or really used any of them. I'm up to doing the part where Chris does the beer bottle slide in e-boogie, there's at least 200 frames. >.< It started feeling more like a chore than fun, so I'm giving that a rest for now.

Someone should buy me a large format printer!
one of the IT guys here is getting one that will print to A1 or A0 - photo quality - hooray!
i'm going to spend so much money when it happens - i just need decent quality files to start with!
he's also getting some sticker paper so i'll probably start making stickers too - so many possibilities!
:)

Lol. I know.
I wanted to make a couple posters a while ago, but they can be expensive to get printed off. And there's no way I'm buying a gigantic printer just for a couple posters. :p :p

It doesn't look much like Chris, and that's 'coz it wasn't 'sposed to be Chris. I was just bored in psych and started doodling and came out with that, once I'd done the hat I decided it was Chris.
